When Harrison School District 2 turned to e learning last spring, they made sure to provide each student with a laptop and the tools needed to succeed at home. But one remaining need in many families was Internet access.
Christine O'Brien, spokesperson for District 2 said, “When you had many people learning and working from home, sometimes there were Internet glitches. We wanted to avoid that and make sure students in our district could have equal chances to learn and that our families could learn from home as well.”
O'Brien said that this year they made sure to survey each of their students to see who exactly needed the Internet.
“This year we were really specific about asking whether families had Internet service at home without a phone,” she said. They discovered that about a thousand families needed some sort of Internet connection.
And that's where Altia came into play.A local software company heard there was an Internet shortage for students and it stepped in to see how they could help.Teaming up with local foundations, they were able to provide a monthly Internet service that allows many people to have Internet access at the same time.Mike Juran, CEO of Altia said, “At Altia we talked to Randy Rocha at District 2 and I just put out an email to friends and people that I knew and that made its way back to Pikes Peak Community Foundation and Norwood Foundation and people spread that around.Within weeks we were able to get something done.”
“The community came together and helped us piece this part.We worked so hard as a school district to get those devices into the hands of students but this was a piece that we weren't ready to do.We hadn't budgeted for it, so the community's coming together to help our families in this way was really truly amazing,” said O'Brien.

During the COVID 19 pandemic, technologies are playing a crucial role in keeping our society functional in a time of lockdown and quarantine (隔离).And remote work may have a long lasting impact beyond COVID 19.
Many companies have asked employees to work from home.Remote work is enabled by technologies including virtual private networks (VPNs), Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIPs), virtual meetings, cloud technology, work collaboration tools and even facial recognition technologies that enable a person to appear before a virtual background to preserve the privacy of the home.In addition to preventing the spread of viruses, remote work also saves commute time and provides more flexibility.
Yet remote work also imposes challenges on employers and employees.Information security, privacy and timely tech support can be big issues.Remote work can also complicate labour law issues, such as those associated with providing a safe work environment and income tax issues.Employees may experience loneliness and lack of work life balance. If remote work becomes more common after the COVID 19 pandemic, employers may decide to reduce rents and hire people from regions with cheaper labour costs.
Laws and regulations must be updated to accommodate remote work, and further psychological studies need to be conducted to understand the effect of remote work on people.
Further, not all jobs can be done from home, which creates disparity.According to US Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 25% of wage and salary workers worked from home at least occasionally from 2017 to 2018.Workers with college education are at least five times more likely to have jobs that allow them to work from home compared with people with high school diplomas. Some professions, such as medical services and manufacturing, may not have the option at all.Policies with respect to data flows and taxation would need to be adjusted should the volume of crossborder digital services rise significantly.

8.What is the author's tone when talking about remote work

1.to promote 考查非谓语动词。try to do sth.“努力做某事”。
2.helps 考查动词的时态和主谓一致。根据后文every week可知,应用一般现在时,且主语后接介词短语together with her teammates时不影响其人称和数,故谓语动词用第三人称单数形式。
3.for 考查介词。be admired for“因……
10.achievement(s) 考查名词。空处作宾语,表示“成就”应用名词achievement,此处可用单数也可用复数形式。
