146BC至394AD年，古奥运会由衰落走向毁灭。罗马帝国统治希腊后，起初虽仍举行运动会，但奥林匹亚已不是唯一竞赛地了。如80BC年第175届奥运会，罗马举行了比赛，奥林匹亚只举行了少年赛。
2AD后，基督教统治了包括希腊在内的整个欧洲，反对体育运动，奥运会随之更趋衰落。393AD罗马皇帝宣布基督教为国教，认为古奥运会有违基督教教旨，是异教徒活动，翌年宣布废止古奥运会。

奥林匹克运动会因起源于古希腊奥林匹亚（Olympia）而得名。古代奥运会从公元前776年到公元394年，共历经293届，后被罗马皇帝狄奥多西一世以邪教活动罪名而废止。1894年在巴黎召开的国际体育会议，根据法国贵族皮埃尔·德·顾拜旦（Pierre de Coubertin）的倡议成立了国际奥委会，并决定恢复奥运会。现代第一届奥运会于1896年在希腊雅典举行，此后在世界各地轮流举行。由于1924年开始设立了冬季奥林匹克运动会，因此奥林匹克运动会习惯上又称为“夏季奥林匹克运动会”。奥林匹克运动会现在已经成为了和平与友谊的象征。
895AD，拜占廷人与歌德人发生激战，使奥林匹亚各项设施毁失殆尽。426AD皇帝烧毁了奥林匹亚建筑物的残余部分。
522AD、511AD年接连发生的两次强烈地震，使奥林匹亚遭到了彻底毁灭。就这样顺延了1000余年的古奥运会不复存在了，繁荣的奥林匹亚变成了一片废墟。
