A try of open writing on the teenage problems
Step1. Lead-in
1. A letter from one of the students in Class 10, Grade 9.
Step2: Presentation: Finding out the problem
1. Ask students to read the letter by themselves and try to find out the problems Jack has. While reading they can underline something important on the sheets.
2. Ask one student to come to the front and underline something useful while reading the letter on the screen in a low voice.
3. Communicate with the student in the front and ask if there are any sentences in the letter that can be used directly as a reply.
4. Summary: when we’re reading, we need to underline something important. But most of the time, there aren’t any sentences in the passage that can be used directly as a reply. What should we do We need to summarize and infer from the passage.
T: How to answer the question in this way
(学生思考,教师提醒学生:you need to summarize and infer from the letter)
He can neither ________ in class nor _________________in exams because of __________________________. (keep/stay awake, get satisfactory marks, playing computer games too much/playing too many computer games)
T: What about the second the one
(再请一学生回答)(这里我也精心设置了一个题目,从原文中是没法找到原句的,第二空是从原文中a bit fat, can’t run fast, hope to get full marks in the PE Exam这些信息片段中推断出来Jack isn’t good at PE/sports. 学生想到的答案有he isn’t good at running, he is a little fat, he isn’t able to run fast, 但是没有想到用自己的语言作更高的提炼, 这种推测能力恰恰是学生目前在阅读和听力中最缺的,需要注重平时课堂中的渗透和培养。 )
He hopes to ___________in the Senior High Entrance Examination of sports, but he isn’t ____________. (get full marks, good at PE)
T: Are there any other different answers
T: So we need to infer from the material.
Step3: Discussion: Thinking of proper suggestions
1. A survey: Choose the top three problems that trouble them most.
2. Write down the results.
3. Review how to give suggestions.
Why not …
Why don’t you …
What/How about …
Perhaps … should ….
I think … had better…
I suggest that … should…
My suggestion is that … should…
……
4. Divide the class into three groups. Discuss the top three problems in groups by making up a dialogue. One group one problem.
5. Ask one pair of each group to present their dialogue. Pay attention to their proper suggestions.
6. Teacher’s suggestions to some of the problems. Ask students to read through by themselves in a low voice.
Lots of homework:
I don’t think our homework is too much. You’d better try your best to finish some of it at school. You need to manage your time better. And if you feel sleepy in class, you can use some oil to keep you awake.
Unsatisfactory marks:
I want to know whether you have worked hard enough or not. If not, I suggest that you should work as hard as you can. No pains, no gains. Success always belongs to those who are hard-working. If you have worked hard enough, don’t be upset. Keep trying, and you’ll be successful sooner or later.
Not being good at PE:
My suggestion is that you should eat less and take more exercise. Practise running every day. If you still can’t run fast enough to get full marks, maybe you can swim instead.
Step4:Writing
1. Review the structure of the letter.
2. Remind students of the five points: Correct structures, Correct spelling, Proper suggestions, Proper transitional words and sentences, Good handwriting.
3.T: Boys and girls, if you want to be successful in the Senior High Entrance Examination, please make full of your time, work as hard as you can, get on well with your parents. Then you will be happy, confident and powerful. Wish you all success.
