By the end of this class, students will be able to:1. understand the text completely2. know more about Spud Webb— the shortest player in the NBA
1. To involve students in different class activities2. To remind students to get writing strategies by reading
Step 1: Lead inAsk students some questions and show some pictures to get the students to involved.1. In your mind, what’s a good basketball player like S: Maybe he is…/ Maybe he can …(possible answers: strong/tall; run fast/ jump high) 2. T: Please look at the picture. There is a small player among the big ones. He is the smallest and shortest. If you want to write a story and you want to make it amazing and special Who would you like to choose to talk about, the shortest one or the big ones S: The shortest one. Tip 1: A good title to attract readers’ interestStep 2: SkimmingOrdinarily, we put a story into 3 parts. Part 1 Beginning Part 2 Main Body Part 3 Ending1. Read Para 1- the Beginning part, students are encouraged to find out what it is about. It’s about some information of main character. It’s a brief introduction. In this paragraph, there’re 2 opposite adjectives. One is small- the smallest and the other one is big. So this story is about a small man’s big dream. Students want to know how a small potato became a big cheese. So Para 1 not only attracts readers’ interest but also brings out the theme.Tip 2: The beginning should bring out the theme.2. Read Para 6 the Ending Part. It tells us what we should do.We should never give up. This Para is about the writer’s view.Tip 3: The ending should show the writer’s views.Step 3: Scanning1. Read Para2 to Para 5 by watching a video. (1) Find out how the four paragraphs are organized (In order of time.) (2) Look through the four paragraphs and find out the key words about the time. (junior high, senior high, after graduating from senior high and after graduating from university)T: It’ s just like climbing up the stages. So this part is about different stages of his basketball life. At first he was small but finally he achieved his big dream. This is the way to success. 2. T: We know our life is full of ups and downs. There are some factors in our life. They lead to difficulties and if we take actions, we can have some achievements. (1) What’s the factor of his difficulties (His ‘small’.)Find out all the sentences about ‘small’ in the story. Almost in each paragraph there is one sentence. (2) Why does the writer talk about his ‘small’ again and again (He wants to make the story stick to the point.)Tip 4: The main body part should stick to the point.Step 4: Careful reading1.T: Just now, we know ‘small ’ is the factor of difficulties. At each stage, what difficulties he met, what actions he took and what achievements he had. (1)Please fill in the blanks and finish the table.(Read Part 2, from para 2 to para 5 and find out the details)More detailed questions in the difficult paragraphs, Para 4 and Para 5:Para 4: What did he do in the junior college What’s the result of this Para 5: Was he willing to play in another league How long did he remain there When was his proudest moment (2) Use this sentence pattern to retell Part 2(time)…, at first …(difficulty)… but …(action)… and finally …(achievement)…2. T: All the stages are the way to success. It ‘s a story about a small man’s big dream. At each stage he got achievements, but he didn’t achieve his dream at once. He achieved his dream step by step. And he not only achieved his dream but also created his proudest moment in his life. If you never give up, you can not only achieve your dream but also go beyond your dream.Step 5: The first writingJust as ‘Great people think alike.’ I think ‘Great people experience alike.’ There are many famous people in the world. They met many difficulties but they succeeded at last, such as Messi, Beethoven, Ma Yun and Helen Keller.T:Let’s choose one of them as an example. Can you guess who he is (Messi)Watch a video and see what happened.T: At that time, he was very sad. He didn’t know what to do. He needed some help so he wrote a letter to this man- the famous youth worker Mr. Friend. Try to write a reply for Mr. Friend, just using Spud Webb as an example. Dear Messi, Thank you very much for your letter. I hope I can help you. As I know, there was a famous basketball player named Spud Webb. Spud Webb was born in the USA in 1963. He was much ________ than the other kids at school. However, he had a big ________. At each stage of his basketball life, he had _________ because of his ________. Although it was not ______ for him to join the NBA, he didn’t ______ ______ and had many great ______________ finally. Through ______ ______, Spud proved that you can do almost anything if you ______ ______ ______. I hope you think my advice is worth taking.Best Wishes,Sigmund FriendStep 6 Further discussion We can learn ‘Never give up’ from Spud Webb. 1. Go over the last paragraph again, try to recite it out.2. What else can you learn:a. No pains, no gains.Have a dream and fight for it. Don't let dreams just be dreams!Don’t lose heart. Never give up.Catch every chance. Chances always go to people who are prepared!Try your best. Practice makes perfect!b. Stereotypes make people form a wrong opinion about others at first sight. In fact, it takes a lot more than just looking at a person to know and understand him or her. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Give others the chance, that is, chances for yourself.Step 7 The second writingAs the saying goes ‘There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes.’ If you were the writer, you might make a different ending.1. Try to change it into a different ending.Through hard work, Spud Webb proved that size and body type do not matter—________________________________________________________________________________________________________________2. Make a discussion to show students’ different ideas.Tip 5: Use good phrases and sentences to support the storyStep 8: Homework1. Finish the exercises in the textbook.2. Find out more never-give-up stories. 3. Read the passage and underline some beautiful sentences you like.
