Welcome to the unit
Teaching aims:
To know how to learn about the world.
To talk about how to learn about the world on their own.
Teaching steps:
Step 1 New words
Present some pictures and teach the new words.
On one’s mind, time, whenever, through, as soon as, deal, a great deal (of)
Step 2 Free talk
1. Ask the students to talk about the questions below:
How old are you How tall are you
Do you still remember your height when you first came to this school
(T: you see, you’re growing older and taller. You’re growing up.)
What comes into your mind when talking about “growing up”
(T: To me, it’s to support the family)--have the ss say their own answers.
Step 3 Comic strip
1. Listen and answer the questions.
Q1. would Eddie and Hobo like to grow up What’s his idea --No, He think growing up is hard
Q2. Will Eddie build his house by himself --No. He asks Hobo to help him.
2. Read and Act the dialogue out.
Step 4 Welcome to the unit
1. T: Growing up also means that you learn more about the world. How do you learn about the world For example,how do you know there’s a city called Los Angeles How do you know a terrible earthquake hit Japan in 2011
2. Do part A.and have different students say their own answers.
Eg. I learn about the world from my parents and relatives.
Step5 activities
1. T: Simon and Millie are talking about how they like to learn about the world. Let’s listen to their conversation first. Then tell me your favourite way.
Q1 How does Millie learn about the world Why _____________________________________
(She likes to learn about the world from books, because books allow her to learn about people in different times and places, and she can read them whenever she wants to.)
Q2 How does Simon learn about the world Why ____________________________________
(She likes to learn about the world through the Internet because it’s quick. As soon as he clicks the mouse, there’s a great deal of information.)
2. Listen and read.then have the ss act it out, then make a new dialogue.
3. Say their own way by a sentence:

Step 6 Language points

Mind v. 介意反对,多表客气委婉的请求。
Mind (sb./ one’s) doing sth. 介意做某事 never mind 没关系,不要紧

3. Allow v. 允许 许可 times n. 时代 whenever conj. 每当 不论何时
Allow v. 允许 许可
allow sb. To do sth. 允许某人做某事 Allow doing sth. 允许某人做某事但当allow用于被动语态时,必须接不定式做宾补,不能用动名词。即用be allowed to do sth.
Eg1. 我爸爸允许我在完成作业后打篮球__________________________________
Eg2. 我们不允许在办公室吸烟。 We don’t allow______________________.
Eg3. Women were not allowed ________ (take) part in the games.妇女不允许参加这些比赛。
times n. 时代
你必须随时代的转变而改变。__________________________You must change with the times.
time 的常用短语:
take one’s time 慢慢来 at all times 一直 始终 at any time 随时 at times 有时 at the same time 在同时 = at times=sometimes 有时 in time 及时 on time 按时 ahead of time 提前 all the time 一直 经常 at a time 一次 have a good time 玩的愉快

whenever conj. 每当 不论何时
Eg1. 你愿意什么时候,我就什么时候和你商量这件事。____________________________.

4. As soon as 一.....就........连接时间状语从句,当主语用一般将来时,从句用一般现在时代替一般将来时。Harry will give us a present as soon as he __________ (arrive).
5. A great deal 大量 许多; 也可用在形容词或副词的比较级前
A great deal of +不可数名词 许多的...
