( Teaching material analysis)
In this period, the section “Starting out” mainly introduces how Lu Xun changed the way of life, which helps to guide students to think about the influence of different choices on life.
This essay in the section “Understanding ideas”describes the extraordinary life experiences of American and Scottish writers, and discusses how they make important decisions at important moments in their lives.Through reading and thinking, students can improve their language skills and deepen their understanding of the subject of the unit.
(Teaching objectives & Core Competencies and Values for students)
1. Lead students to talk about their views on different life choices by watching the video and looking at the pictures.
2. Guide students to get the main information of the text and enable students to understand how to face the future based on their own growing experience.
3. Help students to master the structure of discourse and language features, master and use the relevant language to express themselves.
4. Guide students to understand the importance of a positive attitude towards life, and think about how to choose the right life path.

1. Lead the students to actively talk about the impact of different life choices in class.
2. Develop students’ reading ability and master the structure as well as the features of argumentative writing.
3. Guide students to think and share how to critically evaluate other people’s life choices and how to face his or her future wisely.

1. Have students watch the video and answer the questions on Page 1.

Step 2 Before reading
Activity 1 Before reading the text, students are asked to complete the questionnaire and share their answers by working in groups.
Activity 2 Have students predict what the text is about by looking at the pictures and reading the title of the text. When reporting their answers, students are asked to give the reasons for the prediction.

1. Ask students to skim the text and get the main idea of the passage by filling in the following form.

2. Match the questions to the paragraphs and find out the answers.

1. As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality.
