Step 2 Before reading
Activity 1 Before reading the text, students are asked to complete the questionnaire and share their answers by working in groups.
Activity 2 Have students predict what the text is about by looking at the pictures and reading the title of the text. When reporting their answers, students are asked to give the reasons for the prediction.

1. Have students watch the video and answer the questions on Page 1.
Who Lu Xun
His original life choice To study Western medicine and become a doctor.
His later life’s path Abandoning his medical studies and taking up writing.
Why he changed his decision Because he realized that the people in China were more in need of treatment for their minds than their bodies. The more important thing was to change people’s spirit, and the best way to achieve this was through literature.
2. Have students describe the picture and discuss the differences between the three paths.
What can you We can see three different paths in the picture. One man is standing in front of the three paths. He may be thinking about which about which one he should follow.
What differences between the paths A. The path on the left is very straight and smooth. B. The path in the middle is straight, but there are many rocks on it. C. The path on the right has many twists and turns. The two straights paths reach a mountain, while the winding one reaches a forest.
How will you face your future life’s path Whatever unexpected things may waiting for me, I should have a positive attitude towards life and try my best to create a better future.

Question 1.--Common figures of speech include “simile(明喻), metaphor(暗喻), irony(反语), personification(拟人), parallelism(排比),pun(双关)”; Metaphor is used in the expression “take a leaf out of the books.”
Question 2.--The author aims to maintain the readers’ interest by using this figure of speech, and perhaps to end up a lighter note by using a pun.
