Chinese pop has developed a lot over the past 40 years.
On May 9, 1986, at the Workers’ Stadium in Beijing, a star was born. On that night, Cui Jian performed his song, Nothing to My Name. At the time, few Chinese people knew what rock music was. Cui’s song started a new period in Chinese music history. It also marked the start of a journey for Cui, who would become China’s “godfather” of rock ’n’ roll.
The song has become part of many people’s memory. Following Cui’s fashion – long hair, blue jeans and boots, young fans cheered wildly and danced when Cui performed it. Rock helped them to show their energy.
Like rock, Chinese pop appeared in the 1980s. Because of the reform and opening-up policy (改革开放政策), Chinese people were able to hear and learn from more Western music. Naturally, Chinese singers challenged musical traditions. In 1983, Li Guyi changed the style of singing and greatly influenced the country’s music scene. She song sweetly, softly and romantically. It quickly made pop music popular.
Since then, Chinese singers have wanted to go a step further and make more expressive music.
Hip-hop became popular in the 1990s. At the start, it was underground music as an expression and rebellion (反叛). But in the summer of 2017, the country’s hip-hop scene grew in size and popularity because of the reality show The Rap of China. Young fans use hip-hop to tell the stories of their lives and communities honestly and freely.
As reports say, music is the reaction of our lives and it is spiritual (精神的) food. People will find the energy of young Chinese guys. Their ideas are open and they aren’t afraid to think without losing the traditional spirit.
