( Teaching material analysis)
To begin with, the part “Start out” covers how people living in the past misunderstood natural phenomena. Pictures in Activity 2 present some unsolved mysteries. Students are expected to talk about what they know about the unknown, which will arouse students’ interest in taking about the topic.
In the reading part, the text is an expository essay, explaining great Maya civilization and the reasons for the disappearance of Maya civilization. Students are expected to deeply understand and appreciate the text and further explore possible reasons behind the collapse.
(Teaching objectives & Core Competencies and Values for students)
1. Lead students to watch the video and talk about pictures about unsolved natural mysteries, which will arouse the students’ interest in going into the unknown.
2. Guide students to get key information about Maya civilization as well as the reasons behind their collapse by scanning and intensively reading.
3. Lead students to deeply understand the text, including the logic structure, textural context, and the language features of the passage.
4. Lead students to think and share their views about the possible reasons for the disappearance of Maya civilization so as to cultivate he spirit of seeking truth and the awareness of protecting modern civilization.
