( Teaching material analysis)
In the reading part, the students will read an expository essay telling that human’s exploration of the oceans leads to discoveries in scientific fields and that China has achieved great success in taking deep-sea exploration. The students are expected to understand the importance of international cooperation in deep sea exploration.
In the writing section, a passage about a long line of mysteries, known as the 30th parallel north, is presented to the students, which as a writing version, aims to help students master how to write a short article about an unexplained phenomenon. .
Through reading and writing, the students will have a better understanding of the spirit of seeking truth and brave exploration. Besides, the student are expected to strengthen the awareness of a community with a shared future for mankind.
(Teaching objectives & Core Competencies and Values for students)
1. Guide the students to deeply understand the text, knowing about the history and findings of ocean exploration as well as achievements China has achieved in deep-sea exploration.
2. Lead the students to deepen the understanding of the meaning of the unit theme so that they develop the positive attitude of bravely exploring the unknown and seeking scientific truth.
3. Guide students to master stylistic structure and writing characteristics about the unexplained, which can help them write an article better.
(Teaching focuses)
1. To students’ reading skills by analyzing stylistic structure and characteristics of the expository essay.
2. To help the students talk about the influence of ocean exploration on society and personal life.
3. To improve the students’ writing ability by composing an article about an unexplained phenomenon.
