Two years ago,Holmes participated in Back to School Bash.He was holding down two jobs at the time—one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber.Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day,but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment:“The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it for the next two years.Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair.If they were puzzled over a word,Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review the book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes—just like in school, only more fun.Holmes, who is married and has two sons, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.
Holmes admits he,too, benefits from the process.“There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering(口吃) over words even though he didn’t have a stutter,” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later,“He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled,he plans to take up his role as the Storybook Barber.“Although the world today is with guns and violence,” he says,“it’s a safe heaven for the kids,to come to the barbershop and read books.”

Few things are more satisfying than sleeping late on weekends. But though the extra sleep may improve your mood,it does not appear to improve your health.A new study shows that so-called “recovery sleep” cannot reset the body clock and may actually lead to some serious health problems.
Christopher Depner,an assistant professor at the Department of Integrative Physiology of the University of Colorado Boulder, said,“Sleep loss can influence a range of physiological systems. It can increase our risk of high blood pressure and heart disease,it can cause weight gain, and it can increase our risk of diabetes(糖尿病).”
In the study,Depner and his colleagues divided the volunteers into three groups. One group was allowed to get a full night’s sleep. The next was kept to just five hours each night. And the third group went back and forth, limited to five hours of shut-eye during the weekdays, but allowed as much sleep as they wanted on the weekend.
“We found that a loss of sleep leads to a sharp increase in snacking. But even more surprising, sleeping on the weekend doesn’t help—and even makes things worse,” said Depner.“After the weekend, when they went back to getting inadequate sleep during the work or school week, their liver and muscle insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity or blood sugar regulation was reduced. And this is not something we found in people who had long-term inadequacy sleep schedules. So it’s possible that this is a worsening of the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar for these specific tissues after the weekend.”
So make a date with a pillow. And trade the sweets for sweet dreams.
8.What effect does sleep loss have on people
A.It results in changes in their moods.
B.It does harm to the body clock.
C.It damages the liver severely.
D.It makes people become heavier.
9.What do we know about the volunteers in the second group
A.They were allowed to have the least sleep in a week.
B.They could have as much sleep as possible on weekends.
C.Their liver or muscle insulin sensitivity was reduced.
D.Their ability to regulate blood sugar was found worsened.
10.What does the author advise readers to do according to the text
A.To sleep extra hours on weekends.
B.To balance their work and sleep.
C.To trade some sweets as possible.
D.To get enough sleep on weekdays.
11.From which part of a website is the text probably taken
A.Culture. B.Health.
C.Sci-tech. D.Fashion.

Certainly,a well-rounded (全面的) education is the foundation (基础) from which all of us spring forth.I am grateful to many great teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for everlasting learning!
But,sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something.I watched the movie EasyA with my daughter. The main character’s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their children and developed their ability to handle their own problems.
There was a scene where the mother was speaking to the younger child who announced that he received an “A” on his spelling test. She replied,“That’s great, honey, but everything has spell check these days.”It was funny....but TRUE!I don’t mean that we shouldn’t teach our children how to spell, but maybe some of our time should be spent educating them about the dangers of posting things on Meta.Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works—the credit card isn’t free money—you will have to pay it back at sometime.Oh,and get this—they charge you for borrowing that money.Perhaps,we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships.I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another.
Choosing a career is a daunting task.My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major(主修课程) twice. It’s not that she didn’t know what she wanted to do.What she “wanted to do” and the course she chose did not match.
I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven’t seen what it looks like in the real world.Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories.Maybe if we spent some time exposing them to real life experience—maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high school that give them a “feel” for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared.I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion.
12.Why does the author mention the movie EasyA
A.To share the movie with readers.
B.To show parents’ love for their children.
C.To lead to the topic he is going to talk about.
D.To prove the importance of being supportive.
13.The author believes that .
A.parents and schools should work together
B.there is no need for students to learn spelling
C.children are able to handle their own problems
D.it is important to help students understand the real world
14.What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Special. B.Discouraging.
C.Unimportant. D.Simple.
15.What is mainly discussed in the passage
A.Schools should prepare students for their future life.
B.Foundation is important for a well-rounded education.
C.Life experience is more important than school education.
D.Students should take part-time jobs to get working experience.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so,however. 16 Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully.
When you plan your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time.First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.,then decide a good, regular time for studying. 17 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
18
Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
19 Listening carefully in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what the teachers say.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school,go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 20 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A.Find a good place to study.
B.This will help you understand the next class.
C.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.
D.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
E.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
F.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say.
G.Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teachers say in class.

In 1968,I was a student at the Sophia Hagopian High School in Beirut,Lebanon. One day,I went to the head teacher’s office and told him that my parents could not pay the tuition(学费).Although I was the top student in my class,I was sent home because of being short of money. This was a heartbreaking experience for me,as I really wanted to continue my education.
I went home and spent my day at my father’s tire-repair shop. One day,a very old man saw me in the shop and wondered why I was not in school.I told him the reason. He offered to help by calling the head teacher of the Hovaguimian-Manougian High School and asking him to accept me without tuition. The next day,I took a city bus to the school and went to the head teacher’s office. However, when I told the head teacher the reason for my visit,he shouted at me that there was no free tuition.I immediately turned around and rushed back to my home.
On the third day,one of my classmates from Sophia Hagopian High School came to inform me that the head teacher had sent him to tell me that I should come back to school and register(登记).When I arrived at school,I told the registrar that I could not pay the tuition. She said that my tuition had been fully paid.I asked the registrar who paid for my tuition so that I could thank him.I was told that the kind person wanted to remain unknown.
I went to my classroom, but kept wondering who was the person that gave me the golden opportunity to continue my education.I went back to the head teacher’s office after classes and begged the registrar to tell me the name of the kind person. Finally,on the condition that I wouldn’t go and express the thanks, she told me that it was my English teacher,Olivia Balian.I promised that I would not talk to her.

第一节
Thursday September 1st Sunny
The Double Ninth Festival of this year witnessed our active participation in the voluntary activity.
As scheduled,we gathered at the school gate early, bringing our cleaning stuff and a willing heart. Then we marched to the nursing home, where we helped mop the floor, dust the furniture and clean the windows. We chatted with the senior, and also played chess, practised tai chi and made dumplings together with them happily. The highlight of the day,no doubt, was the gala, brought by the Music Club members, which is meaningful and joyful.
Not only do we learn that old people do need our company, but also we experience the happiness and significance of helping others. It is a rewarding day and will benefit us in the long run.
第二节
Ayearlater,IcametotheUnitedStatesandfinallyreceivedtwoMaster’sdegrees. However,I never forgot the kindness of Ms Balian.Almost 30 years later,I returned to Beirut and donated a total of $1.5 million to the school there. While handing the head teacher the donation,I advised him never to keep any student away from the school for lack of money, because one never knows what that student will become in the future if he or she continues receiving education.
Aftervisitingmyformerhighschool,IreallywantedtoseeMsBalianandthankherforhergenerosity(大方).Ms Balian had retired from teaching and lived in an apartment. When I found her place,Ms Balian was very happy to see me.Sitting next to her,I was finally able to thank her. However, she didn’t want to talk about it.I offered to assist her anyway possible, including financial help or special contributions for her devotion to education, but she refused all offers.Even though,I felt very happy because I was able to express my thanks after all those years.
