Paragraph 1:
The carpenter worked hard all that day. When John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John was surprised because there was no fence at all. It was a beautiful bridge! A bridge that connected one side of the river with the other side! He has never seen such a fine piece of work in his life! And the neighbor, his younger brother Jack, was coming toward them with a big smile on his face.
Paragraph 2:
The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge. They met on it, taking each other’s hand. They both admitted that they should have accepted their own mistakes and forgiven each other earlier. After a while, they saw the carpenter picking up his own tools. John said, “Please stay here to help me. I will pay you a lot of money.” The carpenter replied, “No, thanks. I still have important bridges to build. I hope you will get on well with each other like before.”

Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).
根据最后一段the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.C
由第一段“Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century”可知,莫里斯舞无疑是英国文化中最奇怪的传统之一,它是一种可以追溯到15世纪的民间舞蹈。
由第三段中的“Some groups carry heavy black sticks with which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform”可知,有些人拿着沉重的黑色棍子,跳舞时用它们互相殴打。
由第四段第二句“As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining morris dancing groups”可知,随着时间的推移,参加莫里斯舞蹈团的年轻人越来越少。
由最后一段“However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture”可知,然而,失去英格兰历史和文化中如此有趣和有活力的一部分将是一个巨大的遗憾。

Sharon, Age 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don't know what your middle school was like, but high school teacher will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It's best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn't really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I'm not going to lie. The first day is kind frightening. But you'll get used to it. Don't be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it's really not bad at all. Don't worry.
21.What can we infer from Sharon about high school
A.Teachers are quite strict.
B.Students often stay up at night.
C.Teachers provide little care for students.
D.Students should make good use of their time.
22.How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school
A.Excited. B.Bored.
C.Relaxed. D.Worried.
23.Who mentions the importance of friends
A.Frank. B.David.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).
Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
24.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B.The increasing variety of California big trees.
C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.
25.Which of the following is well-intentioned(善意的) but may be bad for big trees
A.Ecological studies of forests.
B.Banning woodcutting.
C.Limiting housing development.
D.Fire control measures.
26.What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre
A.Inadequate snowmelt. B.A longer dry season.
C.A warmer climate. D.Dampness of the air.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone
B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests
D.Patrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

If you ever visit an English village, make sure to look out for morris dancing(莫里斯舞). Undoubtedly one of the strangest traditions of English culture, morris dancing is a form of folk dancing that dates back to the 15th century. If you ever get the opportunity, you really have to see it.
Men and women wearing old-fashioned, shabby(破烂的)clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods. Women wear long skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached to them. They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments.
Some groups carry heavy black sticks with which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform. The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when they’re over, the dancers and audience can sing some traditional folk songs over beer. The celebrations will often continue long into the night.
Morris dancing is a great English tradition but it’s facing a big crisis. As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining morris dancing groups. The dancers are getting older and older and eventually, if not protected, the tradition will die out within the next few decades.
If you’ve ever had the fortune to see morris dancing, you may understand why teenagers aren’t rushing to sign up. Frankly, it’s not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to do. Why dress up in bells and funny costumes when you could be going camping, playing sports or doing anything else
However, it would be a great shame to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture. So here’s a toast to the next generation of would-be morris dancers! Let’s hope they don’t leave it too late.
28.What is the passage mainly about
A.The origins of moris dancing.
B.The popularity of morris dancing.
C.The protection of morris dancing.
D.The introduction of morris dancing.
29.What do we know about morris dancers

Plastic-Eating Worms(吃塑料的虫子)
Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物) and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass — apparently broken down by enzymes (酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.
Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break down their everyday food — beeswax — also allows them to break down plastic. "Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well, "she explains, "The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond. "
Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)
Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process — not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic."
32.What can we learn about the worms in the study
A.They take plastics as their everyday food.
B.They are newly evolved creatures.
C.They can break down plastics.
D.They wind up in landfills.
33.According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to .
A.identify other means of the breakdown
B.find out the source of the enzyme
C.confirm the research findings
D.increase the breakdown speed
34.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might .
A.help to raise worms
B.help make plastic bags
C.be used to clean the oceans
D.be produced in factories in future
35.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain a study method on worms.
B.To introduce the diet of a special worm.
C.To present a way to break down plastics.
D.To propose new means to keep eco-balance.
II.
Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half your life. 36
Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they'll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions. 37 One well-known businesswoman says, "At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It's a common question, but it will get things going." From there you can move on to other matters — sometimes to really personal questions. 38
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn't. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively. 39 If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he's really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it's time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you're saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, "I've really enjoyed meeting you." 40 Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they've known you half their life.
A.You can become a popular person.
B.It’s polite to listen to others with a smile.
C.These people have something in common.
D.Real listening at least means some things.
E.If you want to see that person again, don't keep it a secret.
F.And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
G.Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question.

Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lived on two adjoining (相邻的) farms. The elder brother is John and the younger one is Jack. One day they got a problem. It was the first serious disagreement in 40 years of farming
side-by-side, sharing machines and using goods as needed. Clearly they could not get on well with each other like before and the long-time good relationship fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then it grew into a big difference. Finally, they had words with each other followed by weeks of silence. No one was willing to be the first to accept mistakes or forgive each other.
One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m a carpenter(木匠) and I am good at making chairs, tables, and even bridges. Now I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the man said. “Perhaps you would have some small projects and I could help. Could I help you ”
“Yes,” said John. “I do have a job for you. Look across the river at that farm. That’s my neighbor. In fact, it’s my younger brother! There was a piece of grassland between us. However, he recently brought his bulldozer (推土机) and now there is a river between us. Well, he may have done this to upset me on purpose, but I’ll do more. See the wood over there I want you to build a fence (篱笆), an eight-foot-long fence, so I won’t need to see his place or his face anymore.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the materials and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
John had to go to town to buy something for his farm, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he left.
Paragraph 1:
The carpenter worked hard all that day.
