Nina Simone is considered by many to be one of the finest singers and songwriters of her generation. She is also one of the most powerful symbols of the civil rights movement in America.
She was born in 1933 in North Carolina. At the age of seven she was already performing music in a local church, later moving to New York to study classical piano at the Juilliard School of Music, a rare opportunity for a black woman in the 1950s.
Nina became deeply involved in the American civil rights movement, capturing the tragedy and pain of the assassination (暗杀) of Martin Luther King in her song Why? The King of Love Is Dead. She later made another attack on racial injustice in the US with her song Mississippi Goddam, written after a bombing of a church in Alabama that killed a group of black schoolgirls.
In 1969 her song To Be Young, Gifted and Black made her a role model for African-American women and became an anthem (颂歌) for the movement to end segregation (种族隔离) in the United States. The jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater later declared, “I would say the person who influenced me the most as a young black girl was Nina Simone because she was so outspoken.”
In 1974, after becoming disappointed with life in the United States, she moved to Barbados for a while before settling in the south of France in the early 1990s. In an interview in 1998 she said that her protest songs had been her personal attempt to defend the rights of American blacks. Nina blamed racism in the United States for her decision to live abroad, saying that racial inequality in the US, even then, was “worse than ever”.

Chinese media and Internet users on Monday decried (谴责)a
lack of morals in society after a toddler was struck twice by two
different vans and left bleeding on the road as more than a dozen
bystanders did nothing to help the seriously injured girl.
The incident, captured by a surveillance camera and aired by Southern Television Guangdong (TVS), showed the two-year-old girl was knocked down and run over by a white van on a narrow market street on the afternoon of Oct. 13, in Foshan City of Guangdong Province.
The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the girl to bleed on the sidewalk. Over the next six minutes, more than a dozen people walked by the girl, yet not one individual did anything to help her. The girl was then hit a second time by another van before an elderly trash collector came to her aid and brought the attention of the girl's mother, according to the video and eyewitnesses.
Doctors said that the girl, who was put on life support after being hospitalized, remains in a deep coma (昏迷). The girl's parents, who are migrants living in the city, are now with her.
Police said the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested. However, the apathy of the bystanders shown in the video has shocked the public, as Internet forums have seethed with anger, and people are questioning the morality of society.
High moral standards were once triumphed as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public.
But in recent years, the perception (观念) of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are perceived to be affecting society's values.
On Sep. 2, an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement. Yet, no one came to his aid, and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose.
Some have linked the absence of good Samaritans (模范人物) to a previous case in which a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused of harming her.
A strong chorus of opinion on the Internet says laws should exempt (免除) Samaritans from liability (责任), yet laws themselves cannot solve society's morality dilemma.
Cao Lin, a China Youth Daily commentator, said in a signed article published on Monday that the worry of liability should not be an excuse for not helping, and this case exposes the decline of humanity in Chinese society.
语篇解读:在2011年10月13日的广东佛山,一位小女孩先后被两辆汽车碾压,而过路人视而不见、见死不救。这些人道义何在?

[2] The world is already having trouble ________.Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those — about 3 billion — are hungry or ill fed. Food prices, currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvest and transport it.And prices will only get more unstable.Climate change makes long-term crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world are already using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded: by mid-century, the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion.
[3] It is necessary that people in the world open up more land and find ways to increase crop output to feed many more people.

[1] Many people complain about their work day by day, however, we have some suggestions for you. Just keep all these in mind, you are sure to feel happier than before.
[2] People Need You. There's always someone who relies on you, no matter what type of work you do. The public rely on the toilet cleaners to keep the toilets fresh. The public rely on the trash-men to remove their unwanted garbage. So recognize that there are always those who need you to do a good job. Please don't let them down.
[3] Plan Out Your Day. Often, we'll find a day disappears as quickly as it arrives because we get bogged down with minor chores and emergencies that keep appearing. These minor fires mean we don't get to tackle the much bigger fires, which would give us a lot more satisfaction.
[4] What's the best way to deal with this? Plan out your day. At the end of your shift, decide what ‘major fires’ need putting out tomorrow. Plan out when you'll tackle these major issues, and then stick to that plan no matter what little embers may pop up.
[5] Do something different. Consistency is a good thing to have at work. But what isn't good to have is the same routine, day after day. It drags you down, it makes you tired early in the day, and it kills any motivation you have for the job.
[6] Do something different! Step out of your routine and take a fresh look at things. Inject some variety into your days, even if it's something as simple as taking a different route to work.
[7] ________. It amazes me sometimes how little some people actually know about their work colleagues. Your colleagues are not robots. They're other human beings too, breathing and talking and trying to make a living, just like you. So treat them as human beings. Get to know them a bit better each day by asking a different question, or by starting a new topic. Share experiences with them, and they'll realize that you're human too, and that it's OK to talk with each other about something other than work.

?任务型读写(安徽专用)
Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction.
Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others quit from one to another looking for something to suit them, the young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation. Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities.
The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution. Nearly all feel around in the dark and their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them.
Having a job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a career you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pitiable than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only discourage your desire to succeed in life but also ruin your talents and eventually make you an emotional wreck (受到严重伤害的人)and a bitter person.

When you feel tired, how do you relax?Drink coffee, take a bath,do some exercise,or play some music and dance?
For dance music fans and nightclub lovers, the world famous English DJ (disco jockey) Sasha will bring them the world's finest dance music. He is coming to Guangzhou,Beijing and Shanghai on November 18~20 as part of his world tour in support of his new CD.
One of the main roles of music has always been going with dancing. However, today's dance music is very different from that of the
past. The history of dance music goes back to the 16th century. In the Renaissance (文艺复兴) and Baroque (巴洛克) periods in Europe, rich people expected to be able to dance at social events. Each type of dance
gave rise to its own form of music.
During the 18th and 19th centuries the most popular dances were the waltz (华尔兹舞) and the polka (波尔卡舞). In this period, dances were often written for the concert hall. For example, symphonies (交响乐) would have a waltz movement, and piano pieces were sometimes in the waltz or polka.
In the 1970s, dance music moved into new places called discos. The music was faster, had more bass and started to become more electronic.Disco music began to develop in the US and around Europe.By the 1980s the music became much faster and even more electronic.
In the 1990s, clubs took over discos.DJs mixed other people's music.Club dance rhythms (韵律) became a major part of popular music.Club dance music has different forms, including drum and bass(低音乐器), hip hop, R&B.It made use of technology and DJs to play a bigger part in spreading the music.

Li Lei, my classmate, is a very determined boy with big eyes and curly hair. You can't imagine that he is judged as the best basketball player this term though he is very short compared to other players.
One year ago when he told us his dream that he wanted to be an excellent basketball player, few believed in him. However, he neglected what we had said and made great efforts to realize it. Now, he made it. He was often found on the school playground, with a basketball in his hand, shooting over and over again, sometimes
until dark. Even though his coach once told him that he would never succeed
considering his height, he just shrugged it off and went on with his practice.
It is true that where there is a will, there is a way.

A.who B. as
C.about which D.with whom
