Each year about 250,000 Americans study in other countries. Some study-abroad programs are trying harder to get students to learn about the local culture. One student, on his first morning in Beijing, was brought to a distant part of the city. He received money and instructions on how to get back. It took some time but he succeeded.
William Finlay heads the Sociology Department at the University of Georgia in the United States. He says challenges like this help students experience another culture.
In 2008, Professor Finlay started a program with South Africa's Stellenbosch University. The program combines traditional classroom learning with community involvement through a non-governmental organization. He says: “We've been working with a particular non-governmental organization in the town and we do two things: we run a number of creches (托儿所), which are basically day care centers for children whose parents are working, and the library in the community where there are some computers. Our students typically work either with the little kids in the day care centers or they work in the library and teach very basic computer skills to mostly young adults.”
Hillary Kinsey is studying international affairs. She spent three weeks in the Stellenbosch program. She says it was interesting to learn the history of the area and the recent development. When Ms Kinsey returned from South Africa recently, she and other students in the program created a non-profit organization called Ubunto, whose goal is to help improve education and development in South Africa.
Mark Lenhart is the executive director of CET Academic Programs. Each year, that company places more than 1,000 students in semester and summer study programs. The programs are in China, Jordan, the Czech Republic and other countries. He says: “In all of our locations, we place students with local roommates.” Students gain from that, he says, but the experience is not always easy. He says: “Not just in terms of language learning, but they also find the local culture can present challenges, and perhaps misunderstandings. They have to adjust to local life. It's no longer OK just to have a little Chinese, for instance. If a student is studying Chinese, they want to come home from a program like this fluent in Chinese. And this will enable students to become more employable when they graduate.”

Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didn't have any other luggage. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.
“Give this package to Jean Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily,” Tony said, “You don't have any luggage, right?”
“Only this backpack,” Brian answered, “You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”
“That's right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”
“Thanks.”
Is Brian a criminal? Not at all. He is an air-courier. And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air-couriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isn't for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible about your travel plans, and don't mind wearing the same clothes for a week, it can be a great way to take a vacation!

[1] A library book that's 123 years overdue has been discovered at a historic house. The book Good Words for 1888 was borrowed from the Troutbeck Institute library shortly after it was first published, but was never returned.
[2] It sat on the fireside shelf at Townend House, home to the wealthy Browne family, ever since. It was discovered by chance by staff at the National Trust, which now owns the building.
[3] The library from which it was borrowed no longer exists. And the book could be the longest-ever library loan in Britain. Katrina Zanhak, custodian (管理员) of Townend House, which has been a National Trust property since 1948, said, “It would have quite a fine on it by now. The Troutbeck Institute still has a collection of books; I wonder if they knew the book________________.”
[4] The thick 860-page book was donated to the Troutbeck Institute library by a Miss Edmondson and borrowed by the Browne's shortly afterwards.
[5] Ms Zanhak said, “George Browne who lived at the house with his wife and three daughters at the time was an extremely keen reader and I would not expect them to forget to take anything back.” She said that it was just hard to believe they would do that since the Browne family at the time were known for their love of books and had a 1,500-book library of their own.
[6] John Wharton, secretary treasurer of the Troutbeck Institute for 40 years, said they wouldn't be asking for the book back any time soon. He said, “I don't think we will need it back. I don't think anyone even looks at our books any more. They are just there for old times' sake.”

In many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them.__1__But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by car manufacturers.
The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program.__2__That will mean much saving, no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car in the future will drive itself.__3__Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.
According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air, and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.
Davis says, cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices (装置) to regulate (调节) the distance between one car and another.__4__computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people.
By 2010, Dr. David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions, by projecting an image of the road ahead on to the car's windscreen.__5__Cars will be connected by an electronic tow bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the normal amount.” says Davis. “but all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”
A.The team there believes that by 2030 all cars will be computerized.
B.They believe that cars will become more important in 20 years.
C.And it will not be owned by one individual.
D.And by 2030, cars will travel in line, linked to each other electronically.
E.So the idea that in 20 years' time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe.
F.Every driver will use less fuel in the car he owns.
G.The car will automatically speed up, or slow down, to match the speed of the car in front.

A.Serve yourself.
B.Change your eating habits.
C.Praise healthy dishes.
D.Go on, take a bite.
E.Share your diet details respectfully.
F.Monitor your pace.
It's tough to stick to a healthy eating plan when those around you are indulging (尽情享受). But don't stress it.These five tricks will help you stay on track. You may even inspire them to join your cause.
1.
Make it easy on yourself, then pick up your fork and have a small piece of whatever is being served. If you say,“I'm full, but this looks so delicious that I can't pass up a bite,” you'll avoid peer pressure by turning the situation around. And you won't make your friends feel bad by refusing their generosity.
2.
While having what others are having, just adjust your portions (比例).Fill half your plate with fruit or vegetables, a quarter with meat or protein, and a quarter with something like potatoes or bread. If you can't prepare your own plate, there's nothing wrong with asking the server for smaller portions.
3.
In group settings, it's easy to get caught up in an eating craziness, matching others plate-for-plate. You can prevent eating fast by filling up a little beforehand. Make sure you have a small snack like a banana with peanut butter,or something else, so you aren't very hungry. Watch out for drinks, too.
4.
You might think you're being a polite dinner guest by saying you wish you could have some creamy food. But it's better to leave it out of the conversation. It can make the cook feel bad about preparing food that his or her guests can't eat. Instead, change your focus to the fresh fruit salad or the presentation of a low-fat dish.
5.
You feel great since you started eating healthily, and naturally you want to share that with others. But if your friends aren't ready to change their eating habits, pushing them to avoid foods loaded with fat, salt and sugar is not good. Waving food away and saying “I don't eat that garbage” or “Do you know what's in that?”might actually make them redouble their efforts to change your eating habit. If you don't want to be hassled (找麻烦) about your eating choices, don't put your friends on the spot either. Wait until they express interest in your diet.

?任务型读写(安徽专用)
One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions(分量). Studies find that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size. Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they're piled, even if we already feel satisfied. See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up (估量) your snacks and suppers.
Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years. Fortunately, portions are relatively simple to control because it's easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat.
Pre-picture portions. Use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick up your fork or spoon. For example, a half cup of low-fat granola is about the size of your fist. A half cup of low-fat ice cream equals half an orange.
Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works. First and most obvious is that you can't put as much food on, say, a salad plate. But psychologically, you're just not as prone to eat as heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds.
Have raw vegetables at every meal. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few calories and lots of nutrients. A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up, cutting down appetite for the more calorie-dense meat.
Start your meal with soup. Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients.
Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down. Don't pick it up until you have thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to eat less. Remember: Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that you are no longer hungry.

It would be dawn in less than an hour. For a week, Daniel Moreno, Brian Stanley, and 23 other college students from Massachusetts had been relaxing on the beach in Mexico. On their last night, Moreno and Stanley partied until 4 a. m. But as Stanley's head hit the pillow, he heard glass shattering (碎裂). From the balcony (阳台) of their fourth-floor room, Moreno and Stanley saw black smoke pouring from the hotel's tower. Almost all the hotel's rooms had college students from the United States, and now they were screaming and trying to get out.
Moreno, 21, ran out into the corridor (走廊) and began pounding on doors and shouting, “Fire!” As the smoke thickened, Moreno raced upstairs to the rooms where other students were staying. Stanley, a volunteer firefighter in his hometown, was helping people getting through the smoke-filled lobby (门厅). There he joined forces with Nalewanski, who comes from a family of four generations of firefighters. “Let's go,” Nalewanski said. He and Stanley wet their shirts in the bathroom and wrapped them around their mouth and nose so that they could breathe. Then they rushed up the stairs.
In the meantime, Moreno had reached the eighth floor before turning back. He made sure he hit every door.
Nalewanski and Stanley found Moreno on the fourth floor, struggling to breathe. After making sure he could get back down on his own, they continued upstairs, down the corridors on every floor, banging their fists on every door.
In the end, while a few students were treated for smoke inhalation (吸入), no one was seriously hurt. Even more incredible, all the students went back to Massachusetts later that same day.
