Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum Location and History Location and History
Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian's Wall. It was the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been a World Heritage Site. Built around AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military supply base for the soldiers who were stationed along Hadrian's Wall. The fort has been gradually uncovered and some original parts have been revealed. There are reconstructions that show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have looked.
The Reconstructions
The reconstructions of the Commanding Officer's house and soldiers' quarters are strikingly different. The accommodation for soldiers is dark and uncomfortable, while the Commanding Officer's house is spacious and luxurious, with court-yards with fountains for him and his family to enjoy.
The Museum
Visit the museum and see many objects that were found at Arbeia. They are historically important and show what daily life was really like at that time. You will see weapons, tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also discover how the Romans buried their dead and see tombstones which survive to this day. There is a “hands-on”area allowing
visitors to dig on a certain site and Study their findings with the help of museum staff. You can piece together pottery(陶器),or try writing just as the Romans would have done. For children, they can build this Roman fort with building blocks by themselves.

Recently a new US study has shown that couples who expect their children to help care for them in old age should hope they have daughters because they are likely to be twice as attentive overall.
The research by Angelina Grigoryeva,a sociologist at Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.
Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over-50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.
“Whereas the amount of elderly parent care daughters provide is associated with limitations they face, such as employment or childcare, sons' care giving is connected only with the presence or absence of other helpers, such as sisters or a parent's spouse( 配偶),”she explained.
“Sons reduce their relative care giving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”
"This suggests that sons pass on parent care giving responsibilities to their sisters,”
In the UK,the 2011 census(人口普查)showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities - a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.
But many are doing so at the risk of their own health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full-time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人)who are not careers.
What does the underlined phrase “is associated with" in Paragraph 4 mean A.is faced with B. is related with C. is filled with D. is fond of 25.According to the study we know that
American couples are preferring daughters to sons a lot
sons are twice likely as daughters to care for parents in old age
having a brother makes women do their share less
men tend to take less care of their parents than women 26.Which of the following statements is true
The number of people providing care has increased by 6.5 million.
More people have left behind their work to look after the elderly.
Many people who both work and care others can be threatened by health problems.
People shouldn't take much responsibility to care for the old.
What's the attitude of the author in the article A.Positive. B. Subjective C. Objective D. Negative

While Michael Jackson’s moonwalk is perhaps the best known of all his groundbreaking dance moves, the late King of Pop also pioneered one that left many, including researchers, wondering how exactly he made the physically impossible play out on stage.
The move in question, the focus of a new study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery, first appeared in Jackson’s 1987 music video “Smooth Criminal”.During a dance sequence, Jackson and other performers lock rigid and tilt(倾斜)their bodies at a straight 45 degree angle. The action appears impossible in real life.
While we know today that Jackson managed this extreme lean with the invention of a
set of special shoes and a metallic pe(g 金属钉)in the stage floor, neurosurgeons and their
study co-authors discovered that was only half the answer.
In their paper, tiled “How did Michael Jackson challenge our understanding of spine biomechanics (脊柱生物力学) ” , the researchers explain how the spine reacts when we bend forward. When bending at the ankles, as Jackson did in “Smooth Criminal”,the strain is shifted to the Achilles tendon( 跟 腱 ). This presents a very limited range of motion without a mechanical assistance.
“Most trained dancers with strong core strength will reach a maximum of 25° to 30° of forward bending,” they write. “MJ, pulled off a gravity-defying 45° move that seems unearthly to any witness. Several MJ fans, including the authors, have tied to copy his move and failed, often injuring themselves in their efforts.”
Even with the addition of the special shoes and floor pegs, the authors say Jackson and his dancers required core strength beyond what many of us could manage.
So whether you’re a child of the 80s or a new fan for Jackson, you may just want to leave the particular move on the dance floor to avoid falling on your face. For those looking for an alternative, we’ve included the below materials on the much safer and always impressive moonwalk.
Neurosurgeons and their study co-authors thought . A.Michael Jackson was really a superman
B.Michael Jackson had the greatest core strength C.the shoes and the metallic pegs were of some use
D.a set of special shoes and a metallic peg solved the problem 29.What does Paragraph 5 probably suggest
Jackson’s move remains partly mysterious.
The authors were obsessed with Jackson’s songs.
Only trained dancers can reach a maximum of 45° D.MJ fans tried to learn his move despite their injuries.
30.What will the next paragraph talk about if the passage goes on A.Other unbelievable dancing movements.
B.Michael Jackson’s success in other fields. C.Ways to perform impressive moonwalk safely.
How children are profoundly influenced by Michael Jackson. 31.Which of the following serves as the best tittle for the passage A.The Science Behind Michael’s Moves.
The Power Beyond the Achilles Tendon.
The Unknown Techniques Employed by Michael.
The Secrets Unveiled by Recent Scientific Research.

In the 1760s, Mathurin Roze opened a series of shops that boasted(吹嘘)a special meat soup called Consomme. Although the main attraction was the soup, Roze's chain shops also set a new standard for dining out, which helped to establish Roze as the inventor of the modern restaurant.
Today, scholars have generated large amounts of instructive research about restaurants. Take visual hints that influence what we eat: diners served themselves about 20 percent more pasta(意大利面食)when their plates matched their food. When a dark-colored cake was served on a black plate rather than a white one, customers recognized it as sweeter and more tasty.
Lighting matters, too. When Berlin restaurant customers ate in darkness, they couldn't tell how much they'd had: those given extra-large shares ate more than everyone else, but were none the wiser—they didn’t feel fuller, and they were just as ready for dessert.
Time is money, but that principle means different things for different types of restaurants. Unlike fast-food places. Fine dining shops prefer customers to stay longer and spend. One way to encourage customers to stay and order that extra round: put on some Mozart(莫扎特). When classical, rather than pop, music was playing, diners spent more. Fast music hurried diners out.Particular flavour also have an effect: diners who got the smell of lavender(薰衣草)stayed longer and spent more than those who smelled lemon, or no scent.
Meanwhile, things that you might expect to discourage spending—"bad" tables, crowding. high prices — don't necessarily. Diners at bad tables — next to the kitchen door, say — spent nearly as much as others but soon fled. It can be concluded that restaurant keepers need not "be overly concerned about ‘bad' tables," given that they're profitable.
As for crowds, a Hong Kong study found that they increased a restaurant's reputation, suggesting great food at fair prices. And doubling a buffet's price led customers to say that its pizza was 11 percent tastier.
32.The underlined phrase "none the wiser" in paragraph 3 most probably implies that the customers were .
A.not aware of eating more than usual B.not willing to share food with others C.not conscious of the food quality D.not fond of the food provided 33.How could a fine dining shop make more profit
A.playing classical music. B.Introducing lemon scent.
C.Making the light brighter, D.Using plates of larger size. 34.Things that may necessarily discourage diners from spending in the restaurants refer
to .
A."bad" tables B.rock and roll C. high prices D. crowding 35.What does the last paragraph talk about
ips to attract more customers. B.Problems restaurants are faced with. C.Ways to improve restaurants' reputation. D.Common misunderstandings about restaurants.

If you're a book lover who can't help but get lost in a story, you're probably constantly looking for ways to have your friends and family join in the reading fun! 36
Know your own reading preferences. Since you are more likely to be persuasive in recommending something you enjoy, it helps to know your own reading preferences. It's also helpful to write down some book reviews and your feelings about the books you read. 37

Encourage them to read a book about their city. If they recently moved to a new city, give them a book that relates to it. It could be a book about the unique art and architecture of the city.
For example,if they just moved to New York City, you could give them the novel Break fast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote.

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend's mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit a scarf(围巾). She showed me stitches (针) and gave me her half done project.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do some-thing with my hands throughout the day.I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn(线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane,a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes, Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic ( 全世界性的流行病), society was thrown into crisis mode, Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home, In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter.Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried,“Mum,it is freezing outside!”Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf.I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

根据文章第四段“Whereas the amount of elderly parent care daughters provide is associated with limitations they face,”可知,照顾年迈父母的女儿的数量与他们面临的限制有关(如就业和保育)。故此处be associated with 译为“与······有关”。故选B项。

32.词义猜测题。根据文章第三段划线部分的前句they couldn't tell how much they'd had: those given extra-large shares ate more than everyone else,可知,在黑暗中,他们说不清自己吃了多少,再根据划线后的句子they didn’t feel fuller, and they were just as ready for dessert.可知,他们虽然吃得很多,但并没有感觉更饱,仍然在等着吃甜点,所以他们没有意识到自己吃多了,故A正确。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中的One way to encourage customers to stay and order that extra round: put on some Mozart(莫扎特)可知,要想让客人呆的时间更长应该播放莫扎特等古典音乐而不是流行音乐。Particular scents also have an effect: diners who got the scent of lavender(薰衣草)stayed longer and spent more than those who smelled lemon, or no scent.引入薰衣草香而不是柠檬香,而D项文章没有提及,所以用排除方法可以选A。
34.根据最后一段的“things that you might expect to discourage spending—"bad" tables, crowding. high prices — don't necessarily. ”可排除 A、C、D; 从第四段One way to encourage customers to stay and order that extra round: put on some Mozart(莫扎特). When classical, rather than pop, music was playing, diners spent more. Fast music hurried diners out.”故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段第一句Meanwhile, things that you might expect to discourage spending—"bad" tables, crowding, high prices — don't necessarily.可知,你认为可能会影响人们消费的因素如:不好的桌子,拥挤以及高价等不一定会真影响人们的消费,然后依次举例进行了证明,所以本段主要讲的是人们对于饭店的几个误解,故选D。

Jiaozi, also called the Chinese dumpling, is a traditional food in China, which is essential during holidays ,especially in northern China . The shape of the Chinese dumpling is similar to ancient Chinese gold or silver coin shape, which is called Yuanbao, meaning wealth. It is considered as a food to bring luck and has become one of the most widely- loved Chinese foods.
The food is prepared a little bit complicatedly , starting with the main ingredients. We mix all the ingredients for the filling together, ranging from fresh vegetables , such as Chinese cabbage to some light pork , also adding some flavorings, such as dried pepper, soy sauce and salt to stimulate people’s appetite .There are many ways to eat Jiaozi , too --not to damage its nutritional content, people serve them on a plate with vinegar after it is boiled or steamed, which is more healthy and tasty .
As an old saying puts it: ”Few foods are more delicious than jiaozi.” People like Jiaozi a lot, not only in China, but also in many countries overseas. I strongly recommend it to you.

A possible version :
I wrapped the scarf around David's neck. David's face lit up with joy. Running his fingers along the scarf softly, David excitedly kissed me in the cheek, putting on a big smile and saying “Thank you,Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received.”Before I could say anything, he dashed out, to join Jane with a spring in his step. I felt relieved and satisfied as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to hold back the bone-chilling wind. With a quiet smile and satisfaction on my face, I continued my house chores that morning.
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously,David noticed Jane could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift ” David said carefully and in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane's house with the scarf in his hand, I felt a burst of pride, one that I had never exploded into in my son. I believed that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane she received a scarf to keep warm, and for David a taste of happiness of giving/ offering.
