Life seems long when we’re looking ahead, and so short when we’re looking back. That’s especially true for a mother. One day you’re holding a two-month-old baby, wondering if he’s ever going to stop crying. And the next day you’re seeing him off at college, wondering if he’s ever going to call you.
Where does the time fly I want my children to grow up,but I don’t want to let them go.The grown children can be as much fun as little ones. Here are two examples:
When my father-in-law died,I called my younger son Nate to say I’d drive up to Yosemite, and we’d drive out the next day to attend the funeral. It was snowing when I stopped in the park. The next morning,Nate and I left early, only to get stuck behind a bus with a flat tyre, blocking the road.We sat for five hours in a blizzard(暴风雪) waiting for the road to be cleared.Meanwhile,Nate entertained me with jokes.I will never forget it.
A few years later,I flew to New York to visit my elder son Josh. That night,Josh began having pain in his right side.We took a cab to a hospital and he had an operation.Afterwards,I stayed for a week to take care of him.We watched movies and ate take-out meals.I will never forget it.
Being a mother doesn’t end when our children grow up.We still want to protect them, just as we did the day they were born. And grown children will always need a mother. At the same time,we’ll always need our grown-up children to make us laugh and keep us young and fill that place in our heart that only they can fill.
24.Why does the author feel that life is short
A.Because she wants to express that time goes by very quickly.
B.Because she wants to show how hard it is for a mom to raise a child.
C.Because she wants to explain grown children are different from the little children.
D.Because she wants to describe the author’s anxiety when her children left home.
25.What does the underlined word “blocking” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Protecting. B.Widening. C.Stopping. D.Surrounding.
26.Why does the author mention her stay with Nate and Josh
A.To describe the differences between her two sons.
B.To tell us how to communicate with different children.
C.To show grown children are wiser than little ones.
D.To prove both the grown and the little children are fun.
27.What does the author want to tell us from this article
A.Grown children want independence instead of protection.
B.Communication is important for a mom and her children.
C.A mother’s love is selfless and forever.
D.A mother and her children will always need each other.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students.Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in,fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage(比例) of teenagers who experienced the long absence of a parent had emotional(情感的) or behavioural problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found a high percentage of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted(盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk.Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework.Perhaps, that,at least for some families,is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base(基地,大本营) from which to explore the world.Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities.Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand,so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower”,as a gift, whose quiet and steady(稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
28.What did the study find about the 618 teens
A.They had more dinners with their parents.
B.They were more prepared to help themselves.
C.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
D.They were more likely(可能的) to have trouble with their feelings.
29.What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ behaviour
A.She doubts them. B.She supports them.
C.She is worried about them. D.She cares little about them.
30.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 5
A.They want their parents’ presence.
B.They want their parents to be safe.
C.They want more freedom from parents.
D.They show more interest in new activities.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Teens Want Potted-Plant Parents
B.Your Kids Still Need Conversation
C.Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers
D.Parents Know Little About Today’s Teenagers
D
Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years,it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, your relationship drifts apart. When you are mad at your parents or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just go home from school,go up to your room and talk to nobody.Even if you just say “Hi” and see how their day is for five minutes,it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in the dictionary,it will say “the exchange of ideas, conveyance(传递) of information, correspondence(通信),means of communication;a letter or message”.To keep a good relationship, you must keep the communication strong.Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as parents. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it,ask them politely to listen to you.Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example. One night,Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but they didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them.Needless to say,she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident munication was the key factor here.If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen,Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way deal.It goes both ways.Just remember:if you get into a situation like Sophie’s,telling the other person how you feel and listening are key factors to communication.
32.The second paragraph mainly talks about .
A.the importance of friendship
B.making your feelings known to others
C.the importance of communication
D.the disagreement between generations
33.The key to happy relationship between parents and children is that .
A.children should always obey their parents
B.parents play the leading part
C.parents should mind their own business
D.both should make the other know their feelings
34.The example in the passage proves that .
A.Sophie’s parents were willing to listen to her
B.Sophie was very polite to her parents
C.Sophie did the right thing when she explained the reason of her being late
D.communication is the key to solving misunderstanding
35.All of the following statements are true EXCEPT .
A.if you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know
B.it is better to say “Hi” to others than to say nothing
C.if you are too busy to communicate, just walk away
D.communication is a two-way deal

The relationship between parents and a child is among the most important in a person’s life.Of all the people in the world, but parents are the only ones who are always there for us,no matter what happens.
But why is it that some teenagers act like their parents are our biggest enemies 36 Once the journey to independence begins, the parents are going to be less acceptable than they used to be.
37 As kids,we learn almost everything about the world from them. But once we reach our teenage years,we begin to feel like we don’t need their help any more. And at the same time, everything from the clothes they wear to the way they speak makes us feel embarrassed.
38 Naturally, they have been around a lot longer and they know many more things. So if our parents are always telling us what to do,there’s a good reason for this. They just want to protect us from making the mistakes they have made.
All parents wish their children to be safe and do well. 39 And while it might seem like all our parents do is to annoy and criticize us,we should listen to their words. 40
A.After all,our parents are our greatest teachers in life.
B.However,it is our parents who brought us into the world.
C.But any advice they give us is meant to protect and guide us.
D.With this in mind,we should put ourselves in our parents’ shoes.
E.This is because teenagers are just trying to find their own identity.
F.They reject their parents in an attempt to create their own unique world.
G.Indeed,we tend to think that we know better than our parents as we grow older.

My mum and grandma drove me to a 5 km race. There was a fierce thunderstorm, and when we got there,I had to wait for it to pass beneath an overhang(屋檐) with the other runners.I started to feel a little nervous, because some of the people there looked really fast. They had proper running shoes and long skinny legs. They were all different ages.I wasn’t wearing running clothes, just a normal T-shirt and shorts.
An hour after the official start time, even though it was still raining, the race organisers said we could go.That morning,I was running confidently and feeling strong. The route went through a neighbourhood and there were quite a few people cheering us on,but I didn’t see any faces I knew.It started to pour again, but I loved running in the rain:It kept me cool and I could keep running for longer, even when I got tired. When I ran,I didn’t wear a watch to see what distance I was at;I just focused on moving, breathing and how my body felt.
At one point,I came to a split(分叉) in the course.A woman who was directing us blocked off(封锁) the route which I was meant to take and told me to take the other way,so I followed her directions.
I was confused, but just kept running.I knew I must be going to finish the 5 km race, but I couldn’t see the finishing line. After a while I saw route directions for a 10 km race.I was worried and thought I was lost, but I had to keep going. My body started to get tired and my muscles were a little sore.I said to myself,“You’re almost there.Just keep breathing.” Eventually I saw the finishing line and spotted my mum.She looked angry.I got past the line and she was yelling,“Why did you do this,Kade You are in so much trouble.”
I learned why my mum was angry later.
My mum went up to the lady who was timing the race.

根据第四段中的“OnefriendofminequietlydoeshouseworkeacheveninginthesittingroomwhereherteenagerswatchTV...Perhaps,that,atleastforsomefamilies,isthebestwayforateenagerandtheirparentstostayclose.”
和“Perhapsourteens,likebabies,feelmostateasewhentheirparentsarestillaround.” 故选A项。
Andthebestparentalpresenceforateenagermaysometimesbelikeapottedplant.” 故选A项。
Letpeopleknowhowyoufeel,evenifit’sjustbywritinganote.”
IfSophie’sparentshadnotbeenwillingtolisten,Sophiewouldhavebeeninalotoftrouble.”
Butoncewereachourteenageyears,webegintofeellikewedon’tneedtheirhelpanymore.”
Soifourparentsarealwaystellinguswhattodo,there’sagoodreasonforthis.”
40.A 根据上文“Andwhileitmightseemlikeallourparentsdoistoannoyandcriticizeus,weshouldlistentotheirwords.” 故选A项。

47.B pay“付款”;afford“买得起,负担得起”;manage“管理”;stand“站立”。
mountain“山”;farmland“农田”;snowfield“雪场”;playground“操场”。
49.C pass“通过”;experience“经历”;escape“逃离,逃脱”;overcome“克服”。
50.D inlove“相爱”;inpeace“平安地”;indoubt“存在疑问”;indanger“在危险中”。
51.A blood“血”;tear“眼泪”;jewel“宝石”;hair“头发”。 故选A项。
52.D carefully“仔细地”;slowly“慢慢地”;hardly“几乎不”;immediately“立即”。
cry“哭”;live“活着”;die“死”;wake“醒来”。
54.D satisfied“满意的”;strange“奇怪的”;anxious“焦急的”;painful“痛苦的”。
55.C envy“嫉妒”;reward“酬谢”;admire“钦佩”;thank“感谢”。
故填it。
故填to。
故填that。
故填where。
写作
第一节
Dear Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you are feeling upset these days. It’s very normal for teenagers to have some disagreement with their parents. So,don’t worry too much about that.I’m writing to give you some suggestions.
To start with, you’d better turn to your teachers for help if physics is too difficult and you are under great stress.Besides, you should communicate with your parents to win their understanding.Last but not least, you are supposed to make an emotional adjustment to make sure you have a right attitude towards study.
I hope my advice is of great help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Ilearnedwhymymumwasangrylater. When she didn’t see me at the 5 km finishing line, she and my grandma started to look for me but couldn’t find me anywhere. They thought something bad had happened. She’d even given a photograph of me to a fireman, before someone said they’d spotted me in the 10 km race.I said,“I didn’t do this on purpose,Mum!It was a mistake.” She calmed down when she realised I hadn’t intentionally done it.I felt bad that I had worried her.
Mymumwentuptotheladywhowastimingtherace. She told my mum,“He finished first. He won the race.” It’s funny, because in the pictures of the finish, there is no one in front of or behind me.I couldn’t believe it.I didn’t even know I was running a 10 km race and I had won it.My mum and my grandma were so excited and kept hugging me.I was still trying to catch my breath.I felt so happy and proud. It was my first time running such a distance.
