状语从句(2)——原因、目的和结果状语从句
类型 用法 举例
原因状语从句 1.原因状语从句通常用because,since,as引导。这三个词所表示的语气从because到as逐渐减弱,why提出的问题用because来回答。
2.如果状语从句所表示的原因是人们已知的事实,就要用since,而不用as或because,since在这里的意思是“既然”。 —Why are you late 你为什么迟到
—Because I’m ill. 因为我病了。
Since you can’t answer the question, you can ask someone for help. 既然你不能回答这个问题,你可以找别人帮忙。
目的状语从句 1. 引导目的状语从句的词组有so that,in order that等,谓语中常含有may,might,can,could,would等情态动词。
2. 当从句主语与主句主语一致时,可用in order to,so as to。 He must get up early so that he can catch the first bus. 他必须早点起床,以便赶上第一班公共汽车。
He worked day and night in order that he could succeed.= He worked day and night in order to succeed.他夜以继日地工作为的是取得成功。
结果状语从句 so引导结果状语从句,意为“因此,所以”。此时主句与从句之间往往用逗号隔开。 There were few doctors, so he had to work very hard. 医生很少,所以他得十分辛苦地工作。
Yury Gagarin (1934 -1968) was an astronaut of the Soviet Union who became the first human in space. At school, the teachers liked Gagarin (1) ________ he was clever and worked hard. 7 Read the passage and choose the best title.
My favourite Greek hero is Odysseus. He is the main character in The Odyssey, a famous story by the Greek storyteller, Homer.
Odysseus and his friends go from Greece to Troy to fight. After ten years, they win and are very proud of themselves. Then they set off for home, but on their way, there is a great storm. They become lost, and that is the start of their great adventures. While they are traveling, they meet many strange people. Most of them want to hurt Odysseus and his friends, but a few help them. On one island a very big man with only one eye tries to kill them. During this fight, Odysseus loses many of his friends, but he manages to get away.
After ten years of fighting and ten more years on the way home, Odysseus completes his journey and manages to get back to his own country, alone. His wife and son are waiting for him to come back. However, he looks so different that they fail to recognise him. After Odysseus saves his wife and son from some bad men, they finally know who he is. He is happy to be back home again after so many adventures.
I like this story because it is interesting and exciting. I think Odysseus is a true hero. He is very clever and has a strong will. I also learn from him that great men never give up, no matter what difficulties they face.

A famous British nurse
Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May 1820. In 1851, she was trained as a nurse. Three years later, she went to a British military hospital so that she could help British soldiers. Before she arrived, manysoldiers died in the hospital because it was dirty. Florence Nightingale worked hard to make the hospital clean and save soldiers’ lives. When she returned to Britain in 1856, she became a national hero. Florence Nightingale wrote two books about nursing, and she also started a school to train nurses. She died in London on 13th August 1910, when she was ninety years old.

● Find out more facts about your hero in books, newspapers and on the Internet. You can also ask your parents or your teacher for more information.
