September 21,2050—At a press conference today it is announced that the first tourist heading for Mars will be the 38-year-old US businessman Patrick Clifford. He will leave Earth in the launching window of June 2052 and set his foot on the surface of Mars in November, together with the other 6 astronauts assigned for the mission to further explore the planet.
Patrick has two years of training to get ready for the trip. Not only will he spend five months in getting to Mars, but another 600 days there before he can go back home.Patrick said excitedly:“This has been my dream since I was four, and seeing the first man on Mars 20 years ago made me realise that it was possible.”
To be able to pay the $1.3 billion for his ticket for the trip,Patrick sold his majority stake(股份) in the company his father had built.“I know that my father would have been proud of me if he had still been alive today, and he knew what this means to me,” said Patrick. There is no risk though that you will find Patrick begging in your street corner when he comes back, but it is said that he was paid twice as much for his part of the company.
So,how is he going to spend his 600 days on the red planet “Well, since I don’t have a job when I get back after selling the company,I have plenty of time to come up with a new business idea,” he said.If he brings a shovel(铁锹) he can start building the first hotel there, but maybe he shouldn’t expect too many guests until someone can offer a cheaper ticket.

In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!
Not all past predictions have been proven wrong.A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internet-years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology or whether people really needed these high-tech things in their lives or not.Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.
Robot helpers
Where’s the robot in my kitchen Nowhere,of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon.Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.
Back in the 1950s,however,people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.
So why hasn’t it happened Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy(笨拙的).And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.
Telephones of tomorrow
In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.
Why The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious: people desire for privacy.Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower Probably not—it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.
And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination.Keep watching the news or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.
24.Robot helpers haven’t been used in most people’s homes because .
A.using this kind of robots at home is simply a waste of time and money
B.this kind of robots hasn’t been developed yet

B.It is too crazy to realise.

D.It has been the focus of the news.
27.The passage mainly deals with .
A.predictions that catch our imagination
B.predictions that haven’t come true
C.new technology that can benefit our life
D.new technology that is in wide use
C
Have you ever run out of coffee or tea Found no eggs in the fridge No bread for the sandwich and the nearest shop is too far away Well, all that can change in the future.
If all goes well, the intelligent future kitchen will soon help solve all your problems. In the future, all kitchen units will be connected to the Internet. The intelligent future kitchen will give wise advice on planning your menu for the day.Worried about your weight It will tell you the right diet and what is good for your health. It will even keep in mind your likes and dislikes!
Designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this smart kitchen promises to pay attention to all your needs. The computer’s system will help keep an “eye” on the fridge. If the fridge is empty, the kitchen will automatically call and place an order at the local supermarket. So you don’t have to worry about it at all.
You get home late, and don’t know what to make from the collection of ingredients(原料) in your fridge.A while back you might have ordered a takeout but now, instead of worrying about eating a collection of this and that, you’re excited. You can pull out each vegetable, and pass each one in front of a web camera next to your fridge.A few moments later,a screen on your fridge would display a tasty recipe.
After dinner, you take your plates to a box next to the sink. You don’t have to clean them, your machine does.It produces new plates every time you need to eat.Later in the evening, you phone your other half, who is on a business trip halfway around the world. As you drink your cup of hot coffee,it makes your other half’s cup change colour on the other side of the world, another special way to keep in touch.

This month,Germany’s transport minister,Alexander Dobrindt, proposed the first set of rules for autonomous vehicles. They would define the driver’s role in such cars and govern how such cars perform in crashes where lives might be lost.
The proposal attempts to deal with what some call the “death valley” of autonomous vehicles: the grey area between semi-autonomous and fully driverless cars that could delay the driverless future.
Dobrindt wants three things:that a car always chooses property damage over personal injury; that it never distinguishes between humans based on age or race; and that if a human removes his or her hands from the driving wheel—to check email, say—the car’s maker is responsible if there is a crash.
“The change to the road traffic law will permit fully automatic driving,” says Dobrindt. It will put fully driverless cars on an equal legal footing to human drivers,he says.
Who is responsible for the operation of such vehicles is not clear among car makers, consumers and lawyers.“The liability(责任) issue is the biggest one of them all,” says Natasha Merat at the University of Leeds,UK.
An assumption behind UK insurance for driverless cars, introduced earlier this year, insists that a human “be watchful and monitoring the road” at every moment.
But that is not what many people have in mind when thinking of driverless cars.“When you say ‘driverless cars’,people expect driverless cars,” Merat says.“You know—no driver.”
Because of the confusion,Merat thinks some car makers will wait until vehicles can be fully automated without human operation.
Driverless cars may end up being a form of public transport rather than vehicles you own, says Ryan Calo at Stanford University,California. That is happening in the UK and Singapore, where government-provided driverless vehicles are being launched.
That would go down poorly in the US,however.“The idea that the government would take over driverless cars and treat them as a public good would get absolutely nowhere here,” says Calo.
32.What does the phrase “death valley” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.A place where cars often break down.
B.A case where passing a law is impossible.
C.An area where no driving is permitted.
D.A situation where drivers’ role is not clear.
33.The proposal put forward by Dobrindt aims to .
A.stop people from breaking traffic rules
B.help promote fully automatic driving
C.protect drivers of all ages and races
D.prevent serious property damage
34.Driverless vehicles in public transport see no bright future in .
A.Singapore B.the UK
C.the US D.Germany
35.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Autonomous driving:Whose liability
B.Fully automatic cars:A new breakthrough
C.Autonomous vehicles:Driver removed!
D.Driverless cars:Root of road accidents

Colour is fundamental in home design—something you’ll always have in every room.A grasp of how to manage colour in your spaces is one of the first steps to creating rooms you’ll love to live in.Do you want a room that’s full of life Professional Or are you just looking for a place to relax after a long day 36 ,colour is the key to making a room feel the way you want it to feel.
Over the years, there have been a number of different techniques to help designers approach this important point. 37 ,they can get a little complex. But good news is that there’re really only three kinds of decisions you need to make about colour in your home:the small ones, the medium ones, and the large ones.
38 .They’re the little spots of colour like throw pillows, mirrors and baskets that most of us use to add visual interest to our rooms.Less tiring than painting your walls and less expensive than buying a colourful sofa, small colour choices bring with them the significant benefit of being easily changeable.
Medium colour choices are generally furniture pieces such as sofas, dinner tables or bookshelves. 39 .They require a bigger commitment than smaller ones, and they have a more powerful effect on the feeling of a space.
The large colour decisions in your rooms concern the walls, ceilings, and floors.Whether you’re looking at wallpaper or paint, the time, effort and relative expense put into it are significant. 40 .
A.While all of them are useful
B.Whatever you’re looking for
C.If you’re experimenting with a colour
D.Small colour choices are the ones we’re most familiar with
E.It’s not really a good idea to use too many small colour pieces

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying.Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son,Billy, walking towards the woods.I could only see his back.He wasn’t walking in his usual way.He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible.Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, towards the house.
Moments later, however,he was once again walking in that slow and purposeful step towards the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me.I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked;being very careful not to spill the water he carried.Branches and thorns slapped(拍打) his little face but he did not try to avoid them.He had a much greater purpose. As I leant against a tree to spy on him,I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him.But Billy walked right up to them.I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer laying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap(舔着喝) the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hand.
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house. _______________________

根据第二段中的“...the grey area between semi-autonomous and fully driverless cars that could delay the driverless future.”
根据最后一段中的“That would go down poorly in the US,however.”
故选A项。

第一节
Dear Lily,
I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling sad now.I’d like to offer you some advice.
Firstly, find a chance to have a face-to-face talk with your mother.Secondly, try your best to work hard and balance your lessons and physical health, and your mother will have confidence in you.Thirdly, tell your mother that you have grown up and can deal with some things on your own.In addition, tell her that you are eager to be independent and eager for more freedom.
Hope to hear of your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house. My curiosity once again drove me to follow him back. After he reached the kitchen,he turned on the tap.As he was trying hard to cup both hands to receive the water,it was still running away through his fingers. And he also had great difficulty turning off the tap with hands occupied. He seemed to be so sorry for his wasting of water.Wearing a note of upset on his face,he carried it carefully towards the woods.
And later I knew what was going on.It began to make sense to me why he wasn’t walking in his usual way.I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life.As my tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops. It was as if the nature itself was moved by the great effort made by my son and began to weep with pride.
