What is language for
Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. However, it's wrong.
Language is for the exchange (交流) of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes.
People shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote:“Foreigners often speak English too correctly." But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, but they make language. But a person can only make his own language. It can't make another people's language.
So Chinese learners can learn about grammar, but they shouldn't focus on it. They should put communication first. Understanding others correctly and expressing themselves freely matter more.
Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he ______.
A. never makes mistakes B. often makes mistakes
C. can't avoid making mistakes D. seldom cares about mistakes
If too many native speakers break a rule,______.
A. what they use will become right
B. they are against the law
C. they should say sorry to others
D. they will become heroes
Why Bernard Shaw is mentioned in this passage
A. to prove that everybody makes mistakes.
B. to prove that foreigners speak English too correctly and they never make mistakes.
C. to show that native speakers are not afraid of making mistakes
D. to show that foreigners don’t have to be afraid of making mistakes while speaking English.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I'll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about "How would I say them in English " At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with friends who couldn't speak Chinese, so that I'd have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.

Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. Previous research found positive results on the use of them. But these apps mainly concentrated on study with learners who had signed up for language courses and they only worked as after-school support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out aimed to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers a special model where some content is available for free while some content is not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated.
More than 92% of respondents state that the app has met their expectations and 86% rate the app very highly. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
The results of the former research weren't always dependable because ______.
A. it was only carried out before class
B. it didn't consider users in class
C. it just focused on positive results
D. it used out-of-date methods
What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text
A. All the content is free to use.
B. Most users consider it satisfying.
C. It s used by more advanced learners.
D. It s more popular with female learners.
Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word "address" in the last paragraph
A. Deal with. B. Write down. C. Turn to. D. Speak of.
What is the main idea of the text
A. Students won't suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu.
B. Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.
C. Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.
D. Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.

Many Chinese students have studied English for almost ten years, but most of them can't even speak English correctly or fluently. In my opinion, there are several obstacles (障碍) that have caused this to happen. The main obstacle is fear! Another is the habit of mentally translating from Chinese into English and then to change these thoughts into spoken words and sentences. Many of these difficulties are caused by the way Chinese people study and learn the language.
We must learn to speak as a child does. When we are learning a second language we need to remember how we learned our native language. Learning to understand and speak a language is one of the first skills a child develops. How does a child learn the language He listens for a time and then he tries to repeat the words. Parents give great praise for the smallest effort and slightest improvement. Therefore, the child develops courage and is excited about learning. It takes a long time before he knows anything about grammar, spelling or formal sentence structure.
As for language teachers, they should avoid criticism and be very encouraging and generous with praise. Criticism or pointing out faults too often causes students to lose self-confidence and develop a fear of speaking. The best way to motivate (激发) a student is using praise.
The most important aspect of speaking is having good self-esteem. Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. When most Chinese people are asked how their English is, or they are told their English is very good, they immediately respond by saying, "Oh, my English is very poor." If you say this to yourself often enough, you will believe it. So when someone compliments (称赞) you, just say, "Thank you!"
The main difficulties for Chinese in learning English are ___.
A. that it is hard for them to remember the words
B. fear and the way they learn the English language
C. that their parents don't encourage them when they learn English
D. that teachers criticize them too often for their mistakes when learning
Students can be encouraged to speak English well through ____.
A. pressure from teachers
B. the development of high self-esteem
C. parents' praise and teachers' criticism
D. praise from parents especially from teachers
The right reaction when someone says, "Oh, you speak very good English!" is " ___".
A. It's a pleasure B. You over-praise me
C. Thank you D. Oh, my English is very poor
We can infer from the passage that the best way to learn English is to ____.
A. follow teachers step by step
B. remember the new words and grammar
C. recite every passage we have just learned
D. learn English the same way that we learn our native language

How Do I Improve My Listening Skills
At many universities, for example, teachers talk for long periods of time in English. You may also listen to recordings in English. Here are some things you can try before, during and after this kind of strengthening listening.
Before listening.
16 Before you listen, think of what you already know. What kind of plants, animals or people live in rainforest Are they in danger Are there any related English words that you know These questions can help you get ready to listen.
During listening.
As you listen, keep your brain active by asking yourself other questions like: "Am I following the main points " "What do I need to remember " 17 You will probably hear new words you do not understand. Write them down. Then listen more carefully. Does the speaker explain them Is there a picture in the classroom or in your textbook that shows their meanings 18 You can also find the meanings later.
After listening.
Afterward, think about how much you understood. If you can, ask your teacher a question about whatever you did not understand. 19 Also you can do it with a classmate. Your reaction could be: "I think people should work harder to protect rainforest."

April 9 Fine
Last Saturday morning, ①I made the first attempt to go to the English Corner located at the northeast corner of Binhe Park to improve my oral English, which left me a deep impression.
Early in the morning I anxiously took Bus No.138 and got off at Binhe Park stop. After entering the park by the main gate, I paused. Around the corner by the river assembled a large number of English lovers, chatting fluently. I was hesitating when a foreigner approached me. He greeted me by saying hello with a smile. I responded immediately with hi accordingly. Afterwards, I got involved and was swept into the crowds.
②Only then did I realize it's not that hard to communicate in reality.
