Integrated skills
Teaching objective:
1. Practise listening skills by listen to a conversation, learn to get information about classmates’ favourite sports.
2. Practise speaking skills by talking about after-school activities.
Teaching material: Integrated skills
Teaching aids: computer
New words: table tennis, else, lot, a lot of/ lots of, fun
Step 1. Revision
Review the learning in the previous lessons, especially the learning about sports.
Get some students to list the sports they have known. And ask them who is their favourite athlete.
The sports that students have known are: football, basketball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, jogging, badminton, walking.
Step 2. Lead-in
Look at the pictures about different sports in A1 on the computer. Ask the students whether they like those sports or not. Among those different sports, what is their favourite sport, or which sport do they like best.
Ask some students to tell the class about their favourite sports.
Teach the new words to the class in proper situation.
(table tennis)
Show a picture about playing table tennis on the computer to the class. And then ask the students:
T: Who can play table tennis in our class
S: …
T: Do you like playing table tennis
S: …
T: Are you good at playing table tennis
S: …
Step 3. Listening
1. Listen to the conversation and write the correct letters in the boxes. Get some students to tell whose favourite sport plete A1. They must answer in this way:
Millie likes volleyball.
Simon likes playing football.
Kitty likes playing tennis.
Amy likes swimming.
Sandy likes playing basketball.
Daniel likes playing table tennis.
Listen for the second time, ask some students to repeat the sentences they hear in the recording. So to help the students to get the details in the conversation.
Enjoy a video about some sports, then ask the Ss: What’s your favourite sport
Ask the students to have pair work to tell their own favourite sport.
Ask some pairs to ask and answer like the following:
A: What is your favourite sport,…
B: My favourite sport is …
A: Do you often play it/ go swimming
B: …
Get other classmates to listen carefully and remember what different classmates’ favourite sports, then ask them to answer: What is B’s favourite sport
This kind of practice will help all the students to listen carefully while other pairs are making a conversation.
2. Listen to the conversation again and complete the passage in A 2.
Read the passage to consolidate the listening.
Many of my students like sports. Amy likes swimming and she is good at it. Simon likes playing football very much. Millie likes playing volleyball. Sandy is tall, and she often plays basketball. Kitty often plays tennis. Daniel does not like sports very much, but he sometimes plays table tennis.
Ask some students to read the passage sentence by sentence.
After reading the passage, ask some more comprehension questions according to the passage.
1) Why does Millie like playing basketball
( Because she is tall.)
2) Does Daniel like sports very much
Then ask the students:
T: Do you like sports
S: Yes.
T: When do you often do sports Do you do sports after school
S: Yes.
T: What else do you often do after school
Here is a conversation between Sandy and Millie. Let’s listen and find out what they often do after school.
Step 4. Speak-up
1. Tell the students that Sandy and Millie are talking about what they often do after school. Listen to the conversation and try to answer some comprehension questions:
1) What does Sandy often do after school
2) What else does Sandy do after school
3) Why does she do it
4) What does Millie often do after school
5) What else does she like doing
6) Why does she like it
Then make the students listen to the conversation once more. And ask them to complete the table below:
What do they often do after school
Sandy Millie
Play ________ Play ________
Listen to __________ ___________
Ask the students to repeat the recording to get the details in the recording.
2. Read the conversation:
M: Hi, Sandy. What do you often do after school
S: I often play basketball.
M: What else do you like to do
S: Sometimes I listen to music. I love music. It makes me feel great. What about you, Millie
S: I often play volleyball with my friends, and I like reading too. I read a lot of interesting books.
S: Me too. Reading is fun.
3. Talk about their after-school activities.
Step 5. Explain the useful expressions: ( Show samples to the class )
