Lesson 37 What’s Your Hobby?
Teaching aims:
The main task:
The students will be able to talk about their hobbies and consider what can hobbies bring to them. Then,the students will be able to express their hobbies with some greater depth. Besides, the students will be able to master the words and phrases expressing hobbies.
Language focus:
Students will be able to read the new words and key phrases correctly in the text and apply the target language into practice by making up stories. Besides, students will be able to express what their hobbies are, why they have their hobbies and whether they’ll make a living by their hobbies.
Language skills:
Students will be able to talk about their and others’ hobbies and the reasons why they like it ; as for writing, they will be able to write a short passage expressing hobbies.
Affection:
The students will be able to know hobbies can make their life more colourful. Besides, the students will be more cooperative and creative.
Learning strategies:
The students will be able to collaborate in pair& group work.
Culture:
In class, students will appreciate the advantages of developing hobbies.
Difficulties:
Students may find it difficult to
1) Talk about the advantages of developing hobbies.
2) Write a short passage that express their hobbies.
Teaching Aids:
Whiteboard, Marking pen, Computer, PowerPoint
Setting:
The students sit in groups and six people make a group.
Teaching Procedure
Lead-in: Check the homework ( The students will present their creation by making up stories)
Before the class, the students have mastered the new words and were asked to make up a story with the new words. At the beginning of the class, the students share their stories together.
Step 1 Listening (Students will learn about others’ hobbies by listening. Besides, they will use the mind-map.)
Ask the students to listen to the dialogue and fill in the mind-map of the students’ hobbies in the textbook.
Part 1. Listen to the short dialogue and fill in the blanks.
How do Wang Mei, Li Ming and Yang Hao spend their spare time
Part 2. Listen and fill in the blanks.
What do they collect
Part 3. Listen again and finish the mind-map.
What are Tao Xiaolin’s hobbies
Step 2 Role-play ( Students will act out the dialogue in groups.)
Ask the students to work in groups and read the dialogue for 2 minutes. Then ask two groups to act out the dialogue.
Step 3 Pair-work.( Students will talk about their hobbies in pairs.)
Students are asked to work in pairs and use the sentence pattern to talk about their own hobbies.
A: What’s your hobby
B: My hobby is ………../ I like/enjoy …………./I’m interested in …………
And how about you
A: My hobby is …………/I like………../ I’m interested in……………
Step 4 Discussion ( Students will talk about the advantages of taking up a hobby.)
The students are asked to work in groups and talk about what can hobbies bring to them. Here are the sentence structures :
Hobbies like exercising can make us healthy.

Hobbies can make our life more colourful.

Step 5 Writing ( Students will write a short composition in 5 minutes.)
The students are asked to write a composition about your hobby with about 60 words in 5 minutes.

3.Do you want to make a living by your hobby

Step 6 Show up ( Students will read their compositions to the class.)
Some of the students are asked to read their compositions in class. And other students appreciate the compositions together.
