Paris Baker is a 30-year-old mother who has two daughters, Kallie, nine, and Harper, five.
One day, the three were playing at home. Harper was playing mom, feeding her mother, then her teddy bear and finally herself. Suddenly, Paris started choking on a piece of cookie. Soon, the cookie was at the back of her throat. The two girls started hitting her back at once. After about a minute of hitting her back, Kallie went to call an ambulance as she started to worry. As she did this the other girl carried on doing what she had been doing and thankfully the cookie finally came up.
Paris was diagnosed (诊断) with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2017, and was told she had five years to live. The condition will gradually paralyse ( 使……瘫痪) her, leaving her trapped inside her body.
Due to her condition, she's more likely to fall and has received serious injuries. She felt it was very important to teach her girls what to do in a dangerous situation she might be in. This included applying pressure to a bleeding wound, what to do if someone is choking and how to call emergency services.
The girls know that if their dad isn't home and an emergency happens there are three steps. Step one is to ring 999, ask for an ambulance and give their address. Step two is to put their dogs in the garden, and step three is to open the front door for the emergency services.
After the accident, Paris was so grateful that she had taught her daughters what to do in such a situation. But accidents like that can happen to anyone. So if your kid hasn't learned first aid skills yet, it's time to do that now.
24. How did the two girls react as their mother choked
A. They called an ambulance at once.
B. They took action as soon as possible.

B. To explain kids' role in stopping accidents.
C. To encourage the learning of first aid skills.
D. To tell readers what to do in an emergency.
27. What would be the best title for the text
A. A game puts a mother's life at great risk
B. A mother teaches her daughters a life lesson
C. Girls learn first aid skills from their mother

One in five adults in the US lives with a mental health problem according to the National Institute of Mental Health, but most don't look for professional help. That's where Mental Health First Aid — an eight-hour workshop — hopes to fill the gap. The class trains everyday citizens how to recognize the signs of various mental illnesses and how to respond in different situations.
Karen VonDeylen, an instructor at the Maumee Valley Guidance Center, says the popularity of the class exploded this year, with 20 workshops offered since last summer. “We've seen a lot of companies and organizations get excited about it.”
“Whenever we notice an unexpected change in personal cleanliness, that could be a really good sign that something's going on,” instructor BJ Horner told the class. For depression, the physical signs include lack of energy, sleeping too little, and overeating or loss of appetite.
Class participants were shown how to calm someone going through a panic attack by having them focus on a particular color or sound. When someone is really struggling, the trainers say asking if someone is thinking of harming themselves is actually a big lifesaver. Another key point is you shouldn't offer advice. You should listen non-judgmentally.
“I was so uninformed. I was one of those people who said ‘Get over it. Improve your situation yourself and carry on. ' When somebody says something — pay attention to what they are saying,” says class participant Peggy Oyer, who lost her brother 11 years ago.
A week after taking the class, HR manager Tina Bost met with an employee who had missed work. She remembers asking, “Do you think you're depressed ” He cried and said, “Sometimes I don't want to get out of bed. I guess maybe I'm depressed.” Bost asked if he had been thinking about harming himself — something, she says, she would never have asked anybody in the past. His answer was yes. Bost says the employee is now getting treatment and taking medicine. “He is doing much better. I'm glad I asked.”
28. What does VonDeylen probably think of the program
A. It faces many difficulties.
B. It is proving to be successful.
C. It is in need of governmental support.
D. It has reached professional standards.
29. Which of the following is mentioned as a sign of mental health problems
A. Focusing on a particular color or sound.
B. A continual state of being overexcited.
C. A sudden increase in one's untidiness.
D. Losing one's feelings at once.
30. What does Peggy Oyer seem to strongly express
A. The value of effective information.
B. The need to prevent mental illness.
C. The importance of listening without judgment.
D. The disadvantages of the Mental Health First Aid class.
31. How does the employee probably feel about Tina Bost now
A. Disappointed. B. Angry. C. Proud. D. Grateful.

Playground safety
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year Emergency Rooms across the country treat more than 200,000 children for playground-related accidents. About half of those accidents are severe. 36 Here are four steps:
Make sure it's soft.
Kids break arms and legs when they fall from tall playground equipment, yet you don't want to keep them from experiencing the joy of climbing. 37 Also make sure the ground cover is well-maintained and is shock absorbent (减震的).
Ensure proper supervision (监督).
38 Make sure that all age groups are properly supervised, with staff at key areas with a clear view of all climbing equipment so they can see if someone is playing too hard or using the equipment improperly.
39
Children of different ages have different ability levels when it comes to playground equipment. Make sure that your children are playing on equipment designed for their age range. For preschool children, the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) recommends small steps and crawl spaces. For elementary school children, rope and chain climbing structures are great.
Inspect (检查) the playground regularly.
Finally, make sure the playground is inspected on a regular basis by an authority on playground safety. This inspection should look for signs of wear and tear, including problems with the ground cover, and should take care of those problems before they cause injuries. 40
A. Watch for danger signs.
B. Choose play structures according to age.
C. Instead, make sure the ground underneath the playground is soft.
D. Proper supervision is an absolute necessity for playground safety.
E. It only takes a moment for an accident to occur on the playground.
F. Now is the time for your school to do what is necessary to make your playground safe.
G. Any problems found must be addressed before children are allowed to play on the equipment.

It's always heartbreaking when a close family member passes. Sharing the final moments with a person we love can be a small relief in a truly difficult situation.
This story was first told on an airline customer service website. As you may know, airlines compete with each other to see who has the best on-time departure record, and airline employees are evaluated based on their ability to keep a schedule.
When Kerry Drake got on his United Airlines flight, the mother who he was going to see was facing her final hours. To add an extra layer of extreme sadness, Drake knew that if he missed his connecting flight, he wouldn't get to the hospital in time to say goodbye to his mother.
On that very morning, Drake got the news that his mother, who had been ill for years and had been especially sick over the last four months, was dying.
To get to his mother in Lubbock, Texas, the San Francisco resident booked a United Airlines flight, with only 40 minutes between connecting flights in Houston. After his first flight got delayed, Drake thought he would miss his connecting flight to Lubbock, the last one of the day. He started crying on the plane, obviously upset and worried. The flight attendants (空乘人员) soon noticed his state and quickly found out what was wrong. They brought tissues for his tears, said they would do what they could to help, and most importantly, got his connecting flight information to the captain.
Within minutes, Drake's problem was received and passed on to the captain, who radioed ahead about this situation to Drake's next flight. The Lubbock crew (机组人员) responded by delaying the flight's departure to make sure he got on the plane.
When he got off the airport train and was running toward the gate, about 20 meters away, Drake heard the gate attendant say, “Mr. Drake, we've been expecting you.” Until that point, Drake had been rushing to make the flight.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Finally, Drake sat on that second airplane.

He made it to the hospital in time to see his mother.

写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Kevin,
I'm writing to tell you about some activities related to first aid in our school.
Our school regularly holds contests designed to improve students' knowledge of first aid, which significantly helps students develop their first aid skills, so that they can better protect themselves and offer first aid to others in case of emergencies such as fires or earthquakes. In addition, we each have a brochure on hand which contains basic tips on first aid, which is convenient for us to refer to whenever necessary.
What similar activities do you have in your school Please share with me.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Finally, Drake sat on that second airplane. Overcome with emotions, he realized how much had gone into helping him get on the plane. Even his luggage arrived on time. The ground crew made sure of it. He still could not believe that so many staff members had worked together to go above-and-beyond the call of duty and delay the flight to help him see his dying mother.
He made it to the hospital in time to see his mother. “At one point my mom opened her eyes, and I think she recognized me. It was the last time although we didn't know it at the time,” said Drake, who spent the night at the hospital. His mom passed away that very morning. Drake wrote the staff a heartfelt thank-you letter for a team who was willing to pull out all the stops to assist in any way they could.
