Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “I can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).
Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, “Kate, smile! It’s a great day to be alive!”
28. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Interest. B. Responsibility. C. Dislike. D. Misunderstanding.

A. It was straight.
B. It was awkward.
C. It was challenging.
D. It was impressive.
31. How did the author change in math
A. She made slow progress.
B. She fell in love with math.
C. She became a straight-A math student.
D. She became comfortable with difficult math questions.
D
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic ( 学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A. Talking about their lifestyles.
B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D. Answering questions about screen time use.
33. What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
34. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.

Participating (参加) in high school extra-curricular activities is important for personal growth. They can teach you a lot, introduce you to good friends, and give you ideas about what to do in future. 36
The most important thing to consider before taking part in an extra-curricular activity is: what do you like to do 37 Once you’ve made a list of interests, it’s time to search for opportunities. Usually, your teachers and parents know more about what is going on in your community than you do. 38 And never underestimate (低估) the power of a simple online search!
Now you know how to find extra-curricular activities, there is one more problem most high school students have: how to find the time. You need to go to school, do your homework, and maybe even work a part-time job. 39 However, time is not something too difficult to get. You have to make the time to do extra-curricular activities if you really want to get involved (参与). You can sit down and make your schedule hour by hour and take an honest look at what you do with your free time. 40
Whether you give up one Saturday every month to volunteer or one hour every week to attend club meetings, you are making the time to make a difference and prepare for your future.
A. They won’t mind helping you out a little bit.
B. You’ll find a world of opportunities waiting for you.
C. You might be surprised by how much free time you “find.”
D. You don’t need to travel far to find extra-curricular activities.
E. You feel there’s not enough time to participate in extra-curricular activities.
F. So if you’re a high school student wondering where to get started, look no further.
G. If you’re going to spend hours every week doing something, you need to enjoy it.

It was a Saturday. Usually, Aman would be out playing with his friends. But today, he was busy in the kitchen. Since his mother was unwell, Aman had taken her place, preparing simple meals for his family. His little sister, Neelam, was the happiest.
“Aman, the dish you prepared for my lunch yesterday was so tasty that all my friends ate it up within minutes. I had to make do with eating their lunches,” said Neelam.
“Ha ha! Next time, remind me to prepare some extra for your friends as well,” said Aman. “I am happy that you have taken over the kitchen duties (任务) now. Imagine having to eat Dad’s boring food for a whole week, like the bread he used to make for us last year when Mom had gone out of town!” said Neelam.
Dad, who had just walked into the kitchen, overheard Neelam’s words and asked in mock (假装的) anger, “Who is complaining (抱怨) about my cooking skills ”
“Not complaining, Dad, just kidding,” said Neelam.
The three laughed. Aman then prepared tea for his parents and served it to them.
“Thank you, Aman, for helping Dad with the housework while I have been unwell,” said Mom. “I hope it has not been too much trouble for you. Hope you are not missing out on your schoolwork because of this.”
“Don’t worry, Mom. You just relax. I have more than enough time to study in the evenings,” said Aman.
In a couple of days, Aman’s mother felt better and took over the kitchen duties.
Aman continued to help around the kitchen by cutting the vegetables and preparing the soup. Mom taught him a few new recipes (菜谱). Even Neelam helped with whatever little she could like washing the vegetables and peeling (削皮) potatoes.

第二节
One possible version:
A couple of months later, Aman’s school organised a day-long picnic. The place was a few kilometers away from the city. It was quiet and beautiful. As the kids were enjoying themselves in nature, one of the teachers got a phone call. It was from the cooks, who were supposed to prepare the lunch. Their car had broken down and by the time they got there, it would be way past lunchtime. The teachers were very worried since they weren’t skilled at cooking for a large number of people.
While the teachers discussed what to do, Aman stepped forwards and said, “If you do not mind, I can help.” The teachers were all surprised. But seeing a few other kids also wanting to help, the teachers agreed that they could have a try. Aman then divided his friends into groups and gave each group a task. To make it more fun, Aman and his friends sang songs and played word games as they cooked. Before everyone knew it, lunch was ready! Even though it was simpler than the one planned for the picnic, everyone ate it with great enjoyment.
