I’ve been a volunteer in the Macmillan@Glasgow Libraries programme for just over a year.I got involved because I was looking for something to volunteer for after I retired from work.I thought being a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support volunteer might be a good way to do that by using some of the skills I learned at work.
At one time,I felt I made a real difference when a lady came in to use the service. She was very upset, but she was not the person with cancer. It was her partner. She had lots of things on her mind. We,together with a counselor, had a chat about her to help deal with all the emotions she felt.We knew we could arrange something,so we discussed with her what could be done for her family. She was relieved that we could get something arranged for her and liked the fact that we managed to get the ball rolling during her visit.
The good thing about having the services in the library is that the environment is non-clinical and therefore more relaxing than the hospital or doctor’s surgery. The team in the library are not medically trained. That means we do not use big words or medical terms very often.
It’s great that the people who volunteer all work well together, helping each other to get a resolution for people who come in.It’s good to have to team at the other end of the phone whenever we get something unusual. It is a pleasure to be able to help as a volunteer.
4.What can we infer about the author

D.Because she had a poor relation with her husband.
6.What do we know about the volunteers
A.They do well in teamwork.
B.They receive medical training.
C.They all used to be helped.
D.They often meet unusual things.
7.Why does the author write this text
A.To call on readers to do voluntary work.
B.To show us how to help those in trouble.
C.To share his experiences as a volunteer.
D.To teach us how to take care of cancer patients.

If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer,a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer.
The US Preventive Services Task Force came to this conclusion after reviewing dozens of studies.
Nearly half of adults in the US take at least one vitamin or mineral supplement on a regular basis. These pills are advertised as a way to promote general health. In some cases, manufacturers promote them as cancer fighters and heart protectors.
Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化性的) stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease. If so,there is a reason to believe that antioxidants — including beta-carotene,vitamins A,C,and E — could be useful as preventive medicines.
But when the Task Force examined the medical evidence on vitamins,it found “inadequate evidence” to support the claims that vitamin and mineral supplements benefit healthy adults.
“Cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and cancer have a significant health impact in America, and we all want to find ways to prevent these diseases,” Dr.Virginia Moyer, who heads the Task Force, said in a statement. But so far,she added, the medical evidence does not show that taking vitamins is helpful in this regard.
However, the Task Force did find “adequate evidence” that people with a raised risk of lung cancer actually increase their risk further by taking betacarotene,a precursor of vitamin A.
The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to healthy adults aged 50 and older who don’t have “special nutritional needs”.The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses,or people who have to take supplements because they can’t get all their essential nutrients from their diet.
8.Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes find out .
A.ample evidence that taking vitamins is helpful for treating lung cancer
B.cardiovascular disease spreads very fast in America
C.oxidative stress can lead to heart disease and cancer
D.people must take vitamins on a regular basis
9.What can we conclude from the Task Force’s findings
A.Scientists want to control cardiovascular disease.
B.In some regard, taking vitamins is not useful.
C.Manufacturers cannot produce medical-use vitamins.
D.Vitamins must be useful to prevent cancer and heart disease.
10.Who can take vitamins regularly according to the advice of the Task Force
A.A 60-year-old healthy worker.
B.A 15-year-old boy with short-sightedness.
C.A 34-year-old pregnant lady.
D.A 40-year-old man who never eats vegetables or fruit.
11.What’s the best title for the text
A.An Inside Look at Vitamins
B.Task Force:Ending to Vitamins
C.Vitamins:To Live or to Kill
D.Taking Vitamins to Prevent Cancer May Fail

In today’s society, language plays a key role in defining gender by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal vocabulary. Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women.
Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men;this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are,and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than men.In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting,as opposed to the thirteen-minute average it took men to describe it.
Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say.Men’s body language is much more reserved when talking to women.Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them.Men avoid other people’s body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom.Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.
Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning about our styles of communicating with each other,I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language” The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex,“I wonder if there’s something there ” would no longer exist.
12.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The differences between men’s and women’s languages.
B.The different speed of men’s and women’s speech.
C.The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.
D.The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.
13.In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph
A.Speed of understanding.
B.Understanding of speech roles.
C.Politeness of communication.
D.Application of body language.
14.What is the author’s attitude to the differences between men’s and women’s communication
A.Cautious. B.Favourable.
C.Ambiguous. D.Skeptical.
15.What is the best title for the text
A.Women,Born Excellent Talkers
B.Men’s and Women’s Social Roles
C.Vocabulary and Communication
D.Opposite Gender,Different Languages

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Common Public Speaking Problems
The use of “I feel”“I think” and “maybe”
In the question-and-answer session of the speaking competition, many contestants began their answers with uncertain expressions like “I feel”“I guess”“I hear”“maybe” and “perhaps”.
These words show that the person is only speaking from his or her point of view. 16
Work on keeping your answers brief and to the point. 17 Instead of the empty-sounding “I guess”,using facts, together with a clear conclusion based on those facts,is far more likely to be popular with an audience.
Using only one speaking style
Don’t stick to the same tone. 18
For example, when they spoke about their dreams, some sounded romantic.Others used humour.Very few used several different styles together.Try mixing more than one style, rather than just sticking with the same one.
Irresponsible answers
Public speaking is different from personal conversations. You’re responsible for your words. 19 So you should think twice before you talk.Don’t be like the student who, when asked about his opinion on book piracy, started by saying he supported it.
Talking around the topic rather than directly answering it
You should focus on one point and give a clear solution. The key is to work out what question is being asked. Is it asking you to discuss a certain topic or to present your own point of view
Use one or two arguments together and give a strong conclusion. 20
A.It can be boring.Try to mix it up.
B.Even though you want to answer quickly, you don’t want to sound foolish.
C.Also work on delivering them with calmness and confidence.
D.Deliberate gestures and affected expressions of feelings are improper in a successful speech.
E.Remember that judges are not judging you on whether they agree but on your ability to say what you think clearly.
F.This lacks the support of facts and seems not to be reliable for the judges and audience.
G.Confidence is extremely important in public speaking as it lets a speaker sound more convincing.

David is a good middle school teacher. When I first met him,I asked him what encouraged him to teach.David smiled. And he told me a story.
When he was young, like many young boys,David was fond of throwing stones. One afternoon,he discovered, that if he threw stones over his neighbor’s fence,he could create a crashing sound — the sound of breaking glass. So he would throw a stone and wait for the sound.David felt fun at that moment, but then he did get caught.
The man who lived next door came to his house and told his parents about the boy and the stones.“I would like David to come to my home so I can show him a few things,” the man said. His parents, sorry for that and disappointed by their son’s behavior, sent their son to the neighbor’s house.David followed the man into his house, through the back door, and out into the yard. There, next to the fence, was a greenhouse. The neighbor led David into the greenhouse, and David imagined all kinds of punishments. What was the man going to do with him
As he led David down the rows of plants, the man began talking about flowers. He walked slowly, showing him each one and explaining what he loved about them.He said,“There are my gladioli (剑兰);they can get quite large and bloom in many colors. There are violets;they are my wife’s favorite. When I see them,I remember her,and miss her.In the deep purple, she lives in my eyes. And these orchids, right here, are very difficult to grow. But when they bloom, they create the most beautiful shape. You cannot believe until you see with your own eyes how a flower can be so beautiful.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
David was surprised.
As he walked home,David decided he would grow up to be a teacher.

写作
第一节
Boys and girls,
I’m greatly honoured to deliver the speech. As we all know, with the development of economy and society, the number of private cars is amazingly increasing.Cars and other vehicles let off carbon gases, and so do many other human activities, which causes global warming, disasters, and so on.It’s high time that we went green.
From my point of view,we should raise the public’s awareness of the significance of going green. And taking public transportation or riding bicycles instead of driving should be greatly encouraged. What’s more,it’s a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life.
That’s all.Thank you.
第二节
David was surprised. There was no lecture,no beating, and no punishment. For about one hour,David was shown everything the man loved, including his flowers, and the greenhouse where he grew plants. Then,he took David’s hand, and shook it.He thanked David for coming, and told him he was welcome to come back any time he wanted. And then,he let David go home.
As he walked home,David decided he would grow up to be a teacher. That’s all because of a walk through some broken glass,a room full of flowers, and a few stories. The man had done a very small thing and he just showed David what he loved. He could have shouted at David. But instead he took a few thoughtful minutes to share the fragrances and colors that meant so much to him.In a single hour,David realized his wrong doings.Encouraged by the man,David wanted to be a teacher to help other kids like him.
