I realized I would not see a real person named Sophie at Sophie’s Eatery, because like most new restaurants these days,Sophie’s Eatery is a robot-restaurant.
When I walked in,a cute little manager robot appeared, looking rather like a toaster with blinking blue eyes.It escorted me to a nice table in the back. The menu monitor popped out of my table and showed me pictures of my dining choices.I tapped my choices and clicked OK,and the screen slid back down.
I watched as full plates rode the conveyor belts that moved along each aisle(过道) of tables. In just a few minutes,my dish stopped at my table, and I took it from the belt.Later,I placed my empty plate back on the conveyor belt, and it was taken away into the kitchen to be cleaned.
I watched the little toaster showing customers to tables while I ate my main dish. The food was delicious, but I was starting to feel extremely angry because dealing with robots always makes me feel inhuman.Pretty soon,I wanted to talk to someone real, even if it was just a few sentences.
So when my dessert arrived,I took action.I dropped my plate on the floor with a satisfying crash.I was so happy when I saw the manager toaster’s blinking red eyes—at last,a real live person would arrive!
But instead,a crew of two robots quickly appeared.A robot broom rushed over and started to sweep the pieces of the broken plate into a robot garbage can. They finished and moved back into the kitchen.
My plan to get a little reality into Sophie’s Eatery failed.I hope the robot-restaurant trend ends soon.I want to deal with people again!

We can have video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of a mountain. But communicating with a submarine(潜艇) or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater airborne(空气传播的) devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water.Sonar signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of water rather than reaching the air.
Now,researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication.“What we’ve shown is that it’s actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air,”says Fadel Adib,a professor at MIT’s Media Lab,who led the research.
The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations(震动) corresponding to the 1s and 0s of the data.A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF.It has any number of potential real-world uses,Adib says.It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane’s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.
Right now the technology is low-resolution.The initial study was conducted in the MIT swimming pool at maximum depths of around 11 or 12 feet. The next steps for the researchers are to see if TARF is workable at much greater depths and under varying conditions—high waves, storms, schools of fish. They also want to see if they can make the technology work in the other direction—air to water. If the technology proves successful in real-world conditions, expect “texting while diving” to be the latest underwater fashion.
8.What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 1
A.The future of video chat underwater and in the air.
B.The frustrations of developing underwater devices.
C.The difficulty of communication from water to air.
D.The current situation of communicating with a submarine.
9.What does the underlined word “feasible” mean

Petrol and diesel(柴油) cars may still dominate our roads, but their days are numbered.A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87% of daily car journeys in the US.That figure could rise to 98% by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their large price tags(标签) drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade critics.Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion(燃料) engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies.Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now,the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back.Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flights a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study’s findings and replace 87% of its cars with electric vehicles,it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61%.However,because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free.That said,as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
12.Which is the best title for this passage
A.My Dream Car
B.History of Electric Cars
C.Problems with Petrol Cars
D.Driving into the Future
13.As used in paragraph 2,the underlined word “hurdle” means “ ”.
A.aim B.barrier
C.consequence D.step
14.In the past, why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars
A.They were expensive.
B.They were very poorly made.
C.They were not widely promoted.
D.They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
15.What is the function of paragraph 4
A.To introduce the history of electric travel.
B.To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
C.To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
D.To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.

Christmas Day was coming.I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus.I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me.I knew Grandma always told me the truth.Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me.“No Santa Claus!” She shouted.“Ridiculous!Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now,put on your coat,and let’s go.”
“Go where,Grandma ” I asked.“Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors,Grandma handed me ten dollars.“Take this money,” she said,“and buy something for someone who needs it.I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old.I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for.I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair.He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat.I knew that because he never went out for recess(课间休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat.I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly,as I laid my ten dollars down.“Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me,put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
That evening,Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper.
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open and finally it opened.

写作
第一节
Dear Tim,
It’s amusing to imagine your using chopsticks for the first time. For a foreigner,it is not easy to use chopsticks skillfully.
Chopsticks are commonly used in China.Though many kinds of materials can be used to make chopsticks, most chopsticks are made of bamboo or wood. The history of using chopsticks dates back to the Shang Dynasty, more than 3,000 years ago.Chopsticks,as one of Chinese cultural symbols, have played an important role in Chinese diet culture. When using chopsticks, you should know what you can’t do with them. For example,it is considered bad manners to play with chopsticks or click them together.
Come to China and experience our unique diet culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
That evening,Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby,From Santa Claus” on it,after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers.Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door.Seeing no other people notice us,I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open and finally it opened.Out went Bobby Decker.Seeing the coat in the bag,he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus,I felt very proud of what I had done.At that time I decided to be Santa’s helper for ever.It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
