Teaching procedures: Teaching procedures: Step 1 Preparation Check the students’ homework. 2.The teacher has students define a restrictive relative clause, list relative pronouns and explain their rules. (1) What is a restrictive relative clause (2) What can introduce a restrictive relative clause (3) How do these words introduce a restrictive relative clause Step 2 Presentation Activity 1: Discussion 1.How they join the two sentences below (1) I’ll never forget the museum We visited the museum together (2) We are living in an age The age is seeing great changes Activity 2: Pair work Students read the magazine article about sleep problems on P48 and find the sentences with restrictive relative clauses in the article. Step 3 Progress Working out the rules Students observe the sentences they find out from the article and draw conclusions. We have relative adverbs: where, when and why. The relative adverb where refers to a place, the relative adverb when refers to a time, and the relative adverb why refers to a reason. Restrictive relative clauses can be rewritten as two sentences. Step 4 Practice 1.Ask Ss to fill in the blanks with proper relative pronouns or adverbs. 2.Ask Ss to translate the sentences using restrictive relative clauses with relative adverbs. 3. Ask Ss finish B1 on P49 in the textbook to rewrite sentences using relative adverbs or “prep + which”. 4. Ask Ss to rewrite more sentences. Night is the time when … Teenagers may experience situations where ... One of the reasons why ... is pressure from school/work. Step 5 Summary Summarize the contents in this period and then ask the students to grasp the conclusions.
