How to make a good first impression at high school
High school’s starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I’m a little afraid because I’m short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.

Kandel

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won’t get anywhere being shy.
Your weight really doesn’t matter. If you’re really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don’t worry about your weight, and don’t let it get you down. “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don’t wear the ‘in’ clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they’re very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Freshman (九年级学生) year, just ended for me a few months ago!
Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn’t nice to you, don’t take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you’ll soon make new friends.

I like to sit quietly near the hummingbird (蜂鸟) feeder and take pictures of the birds. One day, I watched them as they left the feeder to see where they would go.
Following the birds wasn’t easy since hummingbirds move so quickly, but I saw that each one usually headed in the same direction. I headed after them and discovered that they were going to perch (栖息) on small branches (树枝). One male hummingbird (which I’d like to call Buzz) would sit on the same perch almost every time he left the feeder. Wanting to understand what Buzz was doing, I slowly walked closer to his perch.
I moved just a few feet at a time and waited several minutes before stepping closer. Soon I was close enough to take good pictures, and I began to watch what he did.
Buzz usually sat where he could see the feeder. Anytime he saw another hummingbird coming to feed, he left the perch and chased (赶) the other bird away. Buzz didn’t want to share with anybody!
The bird seemed to prefer different perches for different times of the day. In the mornings and evenings, he sat close to the feeder. In the middle of the day, he sat farther away and even disappeared (消失) for short periods at noon. During these times, other hummingbirds flew in to feed without being chased away.
When Buzz was near the feeder, he always perched at exactly the same place. I set up more branches so he could sit even closer to the feeder. He had always chosen dead branches with no leaves on them, so that’s what I used to get him closer. It worked!
Now every morning and every evening Buzz sits within two or three feet of his feeder and guards his food. I fill the feeder, and he almost seems to pose for the camera!

A. Hummingbirds liked to perch close together.
B. Hummingbirds often perched on lower branches.
C. Hummingbirds chose small branches as their perches.

A. Short periods at noon.
B. Short periods at night.
C. The early mornings.
D. The late evenings.
27. How did the author make Buzz sit closer to the feeder
A. By filling the feeder every day.
B. By placing a camera near the feeder.
C. By setting up leaves around the feeder.
D. By putting dead branches near the feeder.

The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four periods without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth period changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS AP-level books Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. He was already asleep. His bag stood ready by the backdoor. His pencil box was filled with freshly sharpened (削尖的) pencils. A big day lay ahead. My eyes filled with tears (泪水) as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school.
I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.

I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time.
As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten. The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave (挥手) and mouthed, “Love you.” And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.

Tahira opened her sleepy eyes and looked out the window at the field below. “No!” she cried, now fully awake. Maya the cow was in Mama’s daisy patch
“I must have forgotten to close the gate last night,” Tahira thought as she pulled a shirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week. But Maya was eating the flowers.
Tahira hurried outside and grabbed (抓) the lead rope hanging on the door. “Why can’t you stay in the field ” she called to Maya as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch. Maya didn’t listen. She just stood in the patch eating the beautiful flowers. “When I grow up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day,” Tahira thought. “I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”
Just as Tahira was about to put the lead rope around Maya’s neck, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. The cow couldn’t stand Red. She took off, running through the daisies and across the yard. Tahira tried to stop Maya, but the cow was too fast. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Tahira said as she closed the gate and tightened the latch She turned to look at the flower garden. What a mess! Half of the daisies were either eaten or stepped on.
Hearing the noise, Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on ” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden. “I forgot to lock the gate and Maya ran in,” Tahira said. “I’m so sorry, Mama.” “I know you are.” Mama walked up to Tahira and gave her a hug ( 拥抱). “You learned an important lesson today.”
Tahira’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother. A painting on the wall caught Tahira’s eye. “That’s it,” she smiled.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear friends,
Welcome to our school as exchange students.
First, I’d like to offer a short introduction to our school. With its beautiful campus and a history of over one hundred years, our school is really a good place to study in. There’s a large playground where you can do sports and a large library where you can read different kinds of books. Besides, we have many clubs, including art and sports, all ready to welcome new members. I hope you’ll live a happy and colorful life during your study here.
All my best wishes! Thanks!
第二节
One possible version:
Tahira raced upstairs and took out her art box. She quickly sat down at her desk, looking out the window at the remaining daisies below. As her brush moved smoothly across the paper, daisies came to life. Tahira made one painting after another. The next morning, Tahira woke up early and painted more. By the end of the week, she had more than twenty paintings. Tahira looked at her paintings and smiled. Each painting looked a bit different from the others, but all of them were beautiful.
The morning of the fair, Tahira helped put daisy bouquets in the mini truck. “That’s half the number I usually have, but it’s still worth taking them,” Mama said. “Mama,” said Tahira, “I have a surprise for you upstairs.” Mama smiled. “Really Let’s see it.” When they reached Tahira’s bedroom, Tahira opened the door. Daisy paintings were everywhere, bright and cheerful in the morning light. Mama was too surprised to say a word. “Do you think anyone will buy them ” Tahira asked. Mama smiled. “Oh, sweetie, yes. I’m sure they will.”

40. A。由there’s no need to plan every day, make a note of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try和Having a plan in place可知,本部分内容与高中阶段做计划有关,因此,A项作小标题最恰当。
41. B。42. A。 They will soon learn that ... than in middle school可知,高一新生初入高中,不“了解(knowing)”新的学习生活是什么样的,但很快他们对此就会有一个初步的概念——与初中相比,课程更难、人更多、成绩也更“重要(matter)”。
43. C。由下文中的flexible with what we do in class和we can decide what to wear可知,Lin在高中比在初中时更“快乐(enjoyable)”。
45. D。由下文中的we can decide what to wear可知,学生们可以自由着装,因此可推断,Lin的高中管理不像初中那么“严格(strict)”。
46. A。 I miss hanging with my friends in P.E. class提示此空答案。
48. D。分析此空上下文语意关系可知,下文that was the time when I could relax是I miss hanging with my friends in P.E. class的原因,故选because。
49. B。 My classes can be hard sometimes可知,Lin的高中课程有时很难;且本段中Lin反复表明自己想念和朋友们一起相处的时光。
The campus was bigger than he had expected ... direction of his previous class可知,本段描述的是高中校园太大,上课地点多变给Lin带来的困扰。
56. the。 at the beginning of ...
57. more。
