Growing up, David Flink struggled (努力) in school though he was smart. He had a hard time focusing in class, and he didn’t understand why he couldn’t learn the way other students did. “I could either be the silent kid or I could be the bad kid. So, I started acting out,” he said. Flink was often asked to leave the classroom because of the trouble he caused.
“At one point, my desk was moved to the hallway,” he said. “But then I had this message sent to me that I didn’t belong (适应) in a classroom.”
It was in a hallway where Flink met his first mentor ( 导师), the school cleaner. “He got to know me, and finally we started playing chess,” Flink said. “There was no need for him to take an interest in my life, but he did anyhow. And that saved me.”
With the support of his parents and the right school, Flink graduated high school and went to Brown University. When he got to college, he found a community of students who also had learning differences. Together with five of them, Flink started a mentoring program for nearby primary school students who had a learning disability. They called the program Eye to Eye.
Since 1998, Eye to Eye has grown into a nationwide non-profit organization that pairs middle school children who have a learning difference with a college or high school mentor who also has a learning difference. Eye to Eye’s curriculum (课程) uses art as a self-expression tool. Every lesson tries to move students from self-doubt to confidence.
While Flink enjoys hearing about the academic ( 学业的) success Eye to Eye brings to children, there’s something more he finds satisfying. “It’s satisfying when I hear that because they were in Eye to Eye, they now better understand somebody else’s experience who’s different from them — this is what we need,” Flink said. “We have to love each other across our differences.”
24. What problem did Flink have as a student
A. He couldn’t write.
B. He wasn’t very smart.
C. He disliked sharing a desk.
D. He had difficulty learning.

A. By showing an interest in his life.

C. By introducing him to a university.
D. By advising him to enter chess competitions.
26. What’s the purpose of Eye to Eye
A. To draw attention to art education.
B. To teach children about making friends.
C. To help students who have learning differences.
D. To get more people to receive higher education.
27. What area of children’s development does Flink care more about
A. Their personal experiences.
B. Their academic achievement.
C. Their communication ability.
D. Their understanding of others.

When we first rented a home on Seven Mile Island, in Avalon and Stone Harbor in Southern New Jersey, I never thought that my family would continue to go there every summer for more than twenty years. But that is exactly what happened. The thing is, something fabulous happens when you get into a vacation routine (惯例): It becomes part of family culture.
Traveling to different destinations is great for learning new things, and we do enjoy exploring new parts of the world. But for a comfortable getaway, knowing what to expect when traveling to a favorite spot (地点) is priceless. My family takes vacations during spring break and other holidays as well. But during our repeat beach vacation I don’t feel the need to see a world wonder or spend an entire day in a museum because it’s my only chance to see amazing works of art. All that’s required of me is to bring a book and a beach chair, with no fear of missing out.
My two daughters were in grade school when we started going to the Jersey Shore; now they’re both married, and their husbands come along, too. My son wasn’t born yet the first time we rented a beach house; now he’s a teen learning to surf ( 冲浪). As the family grows, we add to our list of family activities. There are games ranging from basketball to competitive card games.
One added advantage of repeatedly visiting the same place is being able to explore it in a way we could never do with only a one-time visit. On our seven-mile beach island, this means we’ve had time to spend exploring the wetlands and bird-wildlife refuges ( 保护区) that are unique to the area but don’t necessarily make the list of top beach activities for first-timers. We’ve explored up and down the coast and found our favorite spots to bike, fish, and eat.
28. What does the underlined word “fabulous” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Admiring.
B. Wonderful.
C. Easy.
D. Similar.
29. What is one reason why the author enjoys his repeat vacation
A. It costs less money.
B. It’s comfortable and relaxing.
C. It doesn’t need careful planning.
D. It’s great for learning new things.
30. What changes have the author’s family made to their vacation over the years
A. Starting renting a beach house.
B. Asking some strangers to join them.
C. Keeping adding to family activities.
D. Doing it at different seasons every year.
31. What does the author say about traveling to the same destination
A. It has an unexpected result.
B. It saves people a lot of time.
C. It offers a chance to do unique things.
D. It allows people to explore the place well.

On August 27, 2019, my friend and I boarded the first leg of our journey from Vancouver Island, taking us to Peru, South America.
Twenty-four hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco, Peru, a city of one million ing from Vancouver Island, where we live and which is only 100 feet above sea level, we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude ( 海拔) — over 11,000 feet — and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen ( 缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travellers and the locals: drink lots of coca leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.
We were soon hiking through the ruins (遗迹) and surrounding ancient castles of Cusco. Leaving Cusco the next day, we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas. Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it’s one of the most interesting places to visit.
Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley, we stayed at Willka T’ika for the next week. This place is wonderful. We enjoyed delicious vegetarian meals, all made with local produce by loving Quechua people.
You can’t go to Peru without visiting historic Machu Picchu. The “road” up to the ruins is made up of an endless series of switchbacks ( 急转弯), resulting in cold sweats ( 汗). It was worth the ride though, as we walked through the ruins.
Too soon, it was time to leave Peru. We learned the unique history of Inca, Quechua culture, and the farming methods still widely practiced. The best thing we took away was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet. We promised to be more mindful upon returning home to Vancouver Island.
32. Why did the author drink lots of coca leaf tea
A. To have a good rest.
B. To follow the local custom.
C. To feel better at a greater height.
D. To avoid getting thirsty on the way.
33. What does the author think of the Moray Ruins
A. They’re known by most travel lovers.
B. They’re not as interesting as expected.
C. They’re no longer suitable for farming.
D. They’re an example of creative engineering.
34. Which can best describe the author’s trip to Machu Picchu
A. Dangerous but worthwhile.
B. Easy and interesting.
C. Boring and risky.
D. Safe but tiring.
35. How does the author’s trip to Peru influence him
A. It encourages him to be more caring.
B. It teaches him to accept differences.
C. It helps him understand his own culture.
D. It allows him to experience modern farming.

“What’s this — Ben is trying out for Mr. Zuckerman What if he ruins the whole play He’s never acted before.”
My ears burned at hearing my name. It was Lindsey, the most popular student in our school, talking to her friends. She would be playing Charlotte. She clearly had no idea that my locker was next to Mrs. Stevens’s room where the tryout schedule was posted.
Lindsey was right. I’d never been in a play. At lunch, with a heavy heart, I told my best friend Trevor that I’d changed my mind. I’d join the technical crew (技术团队) and just be backstage (在后台). Trevor shook his head, but he didn’t try to change my mind.
Rehearsal ( 排练) started, and I spent Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at school. It was fun to watch the actors from backstage. By the third week I’d learned everyone’s lines.
And then, only two days before the performance, Josh, the student who was supposed to play Mr. Zuckerman, fell off his bike and broke his leg.
Mrs. Stevens called us together. “We can’t get someone ready in two days. We’ll have to put off the play,” she said sadly.
For once everyone was silent. Then I heard Trevor’s voice. “Ben can do it. He knows all the lines.”
Suddenly, everyone looked at me.
Mrs. Stevens asked, “Is that right ”
I nodded.
Lindsey spoke up, “Are you sure ”
I looked at her and spoke out Mr. Zuckerman’s longest line.
When I finished, everyone clapped (鼓掌). Mrs. Stevens said, “All right, Ben, you’ve saved the show. That’s all for today. Ben, Lindsey — can you stay ”
Mrs. Stevens started us on the first act. I spoke my lines so quickly it sounded like a movie on fast-forward. I even tripped over my feet. Halfway through the second act, Lindsey sighed. “Maybe we should put off the show until Josh gets better.”
I was ready to agree, but Mrs. Stevens spoke first. “Let’s see how it goes tomorrow.”
The next day, Mrs. Stevens helped me during lunch. She taught me how to project my voice and take deep breaths (呼吸) so that I’d stay relaxed onstage. I could tell she was worried.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
With so many students watching me at rehearsal, I forgot everything Mrs. Stevens had said. ______________________________________________________

I think we will have a great time!

第二节
One possible version:
With so many students watching me at rehearsal, I forgot everything Mrs. Stevens had said. I missed some lines and even knocked over a chair. Lindsey laughed loudest. Then, at the beginning of the second act, I remembered to project my voice and breathe. Suddenly, I felt as if I was a movie star. It must have made a difference, because at the end, Mrs. Stevens clapped. Even Lindsey looked relaxed.
It was opening night, and I stood backstage, shaking with fear. The audience clapped. End of scene one. It was my turn. The lights came up. I took a deep breath and walked on. It seemed like just a minute later that the play was over. I’d made it through. I hadn’t missed a line or knocked anything over. The audience clapped. As we all walked offstage, Lindsey said quietly, “You turned out to be some actor”. I smiled. Maybe next year I’ll try out for the lead.
