Born in Balmain, New South Wales in 1937, Dawn Fraser is the youngest of eight children from a working-class family. In 1952, her great swimming ability was noticed by coach Harry Gallagher, who took over her training and set the 1956 Olympics as their goal.
In 1955 Dawn won her first Australian title in the 220 yards (码) freestyle and, during that summer season, went on to rewrite the record books: setting new Australian records in all freestyle events up to 880 yards. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics she became an Australian national hero and world swimming star, winning the 100 metres freestyle gold medal in world record time as well as taking gold in the 100 metres freestyle relay and silver in the 400 metres freestyle.
Dawn won two more gold medals at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales, and another gold at the Rome Olympics in 1960 for the 100 metres freestyle. “The Last Dance”, the documentary (纪录片), told the story of Michael Jordan and his success with the Chicago Bulls. We learned a lot about Michael Jordan and his championships. We took behind-the-scenes glimpses (一瞥) at what it’s like to compete in the NBA. We were given a glimpse into the ‘90s basketball era (时代) at a time when almost no sports are being played. But it also meant something for our culture, experts say.
Dr. Josh Shuart, the director of sport management at the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology at Sacred Heart University (Connecticut), told the Deseret News that the documentary showed something important for our modern society. Watching “The Last Dance” gave us something to look forward to during a time when there’s nothing else going on, he said. “Why is it important and why did people watch it The latter is simple: with the absence of live sports of any kind, it was probably the single most interesting thing on TV,” Shuart said in an email to the Deseret News.
Michael Jordan matters for sports culture, too. Jordan set the standard when it came to connecting athletes to brands (品牌) and brands to athletes. Athletes can take care of their brand during their careers and even well into retirement (退休). Shaquille O’Neal is an example, Shuart said. The Los Angeles Lakers legend — though highly celebrated for his basketball career — has built post-basketball success through business opportunities.
There might not have been too much new content in “The Last Dance” for sports fans who grew up in the Jordan era. But storytelling still provides a path for us to find happiness, Shuart said.
“Above all, even though we know the beginning, middle, and end, the storytelling provides amazing insight and results in a very interesting story,” he said.
28. What is “The Last Dance” mainly about
A. The history of the Chicago Bulls.
B. Michael Jordan’s growing-up experience.
C. The development of basketball in the 1990s.
D. Michael Jordan’s success with the Chicago Bulls.
29. Why did the author take Shaquille O’Neal as an example
A. To prove that it takes athletes much hard work to be successful.
B. To show Michael Jordan’s great influence on other athletes.
C. To discuss why basketball means a lot to most people.
D. To compare Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.
30. What does Shuart think of “The Last Dance”
A. It shows Michael Jordan’s unknown life.
B. It can’t attract Michael Jordan’s fans.
C. It is encouraging and successful.
D. It is boring for most people.
31. Where does the text probably come from
A. A TV guide.
B. A business report.
C. An official notice.
D. A documentary review.

Since the 1980s, Special Olympics Unified Sports has created chances for many middle and high school students that they didn’t have before. Young athletes with intellectual (智力的) and physical disabilities who played in the Special Olympics could now play on middle and high school teams. More than 1.6 million Unified teammates now compete in more than 30 sports around the world. Unified athletes train and play with Unified student partners.
Contoocook Valley Regional High School (ConVal) in Peterborough, New Hampshire, has two Unified sports programs: basketball and soccer. Kevin Came, a ConVal administrator and Unified basketball coach, understands the influence that these teams have on the athletes. “Unified Sports has the same influence on the athletes as all other varsity (大学) sports,” he says. “It builds their personalities, helps build sport skills, confidence, teamwork, and gives them the honor of playing for their school. Days of playing high school sports will be long remembered by the athletes as years go by.”
Unified teams are considered varsity sports, but there are no tryouts, and the spirit around both teams is always positive and encouraging.
Steve Erdody has coached Unified basketball for 10 years. “My goal is always to make it a positive experience every time, whether it be a practice or game, and that goes for opponents (对手) too. We try to get every athlete on our team to score each game, as well as help the athletes on the other team score.”
Andres Torugee, a recent ConVal graduate, played on both the Unified soccer and Unified basketball teams. As part of the Unified soccer team, he won state championships in 2017 and 2018.
“If you are considering joining a Unified sport, you should go for it because it was so much fun playing soccer and basketball and the coaches are really good and funny too,” Torugee said. “Unified and Special Olympics taught me to play as a team and to share the ball with my teammates. It was a great way to make friends.”

KiwiSport is one of New Zealand’s greatest sporting success stories. Organized more than 30 years ago, it is now an activity in nine out of 10 primary and high schools. 36 Its main goal is to make sport and exercise fun for all of New Zealand’s young people.
KiwiSport is based on Aussie Sport, a similar program for young people in Australia. It makes adult sport easier for kids to play. Rules are changed. 37 And the equipment (设备) is shorter and lighter. In KiwiSoftball, for example, younger kids are allowed to hit off a high tee (球座) to hit the ball farther. 38 To encourage kids to help each other, the pitcher (投手) is part of the team at bat (上场击球).
The Hillary Commission for Sport, Fitness and Leisure, which supports the program, chose the name KiwiSport. Regional offices across New Zealand provide the equipment and learning activities needed for each of the different KiwiSports. Through play and simple activities, kids can develop skills at their own pace (节奏). 39 And it helps children continue with sport and exercise as they grow older.
Vanessa Brown and Jodie McLuskie are KiwiSport coaches. Their sport of choice is marching. 40 That way, they can have fun while learning team spirit.
A. The playing areas become smaller.
B. Sports are changed to fit their needs.
C. And it has spread to youth clubs as well.
D. A softer ball is used, making it easier to catch.
E. This method makes it easier to learn and enjoy sports.

“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice calls from the hallway, and I sit up quickly. Today is the day! The day that I will finally be a casteller — a human tower builder. And today is my sister Magdalena’s first casteller competition, also.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups are very popular. My city of Palma de Mallorca is hosting today’s competition. In town, I see that the center of Palma is already full of people. While I wait for our turn to compete, my friend Tomeu comes to stand with me. He and his family are also part of our team.
“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu ” I am very nervous.
Tomeu smiles at me. “We are never ready, Jordi.” He points to the tower going up in front of us. “Just like those people, you must trust the others and yourself.”
Soon, it is our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men make the base for our tower. Then as many as fifty more men and women crowd behind and begin pushing on their backs to keep them close together. Four smaller men climb onto the backs of the base group and stand on their shoulders, creating a strong second level. Another group of men form the third level. Then, a group of women start climbing and begin to form the fourth level. Next, I watch as my mother climbs up to stand on the shoulders of another casteller.
Then suddenly it is my turn. Tomeu and I will make up the sixth level. Climbing over the backs of the first two tiers (层) is easy because the people are leaning (倾斜) forward. But after that, I must climb straight up the backs of others. By the time I reach the fifth tier, nerves make my hands sweat and I slide (滑) down. I take a deep breath (呼吸) to calm myself. “Easy! Trust yourself!” My mother says quietly.

第二节
One possible version:
I feel my mother’s strength and my feet are steady on her shoulders. I turn my face up to the sun and laugh. Under my feet, the base feels strong, and my heart beats peacefully. Far below, I can hear people’s cheering, and soon, I feel Magdalena’s hands on my feet. She holds my shirt and then she climbs up the back of my body. I work hard to hold myself straight and still and strong for her. And once she climbs onto my shoulders, she waves her hand to the judges.
Our tower is complete! The crowd cheers even louder. I smile across at Tomeu. I am very thankful for his encouragement and support. Whether or not we win this competition, I know we have done what we set out to do. Our team has worked together. With trust in each other and with focus on the task, we have built our castle. Today, I am a casteller!

59. to host。考查动词不定式。encourage sb. to do sth.鼓励某人做某事。
