Shelton Murray has been playing the didgeridoo(迪吉里杜管) since he was five years old.Now 22,the musician will be travelling to the United States with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for the first time.
Mr Murray comes from an Aboriginal community and said his love of the didgeridoo had grown out of his culture. He was taught by his father Lazarus Murray from a young age,but said he was also inspired by his grandfather Peter Apaak Jupurrula Miller.“My father learnt from David Blanasi. Then he taught me what he learnt from David,” he said.
As the youngest member of a Tiwi Islander band called B2M(Bathurst to Melville) in the Northern Territory,Mr Murray played the didgeridoo for the opening act of the Tina Arena Darwin concert in 2014.Now his didgeridoo skills have caught the attention of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, where he was invited to perform in the show The Reef Revisited, which will be touring the US next week.
“It’s exciting for me to be travelling over to America,” he said.Mr Murray said there were challenges for young Aboriginal artists to break into the industry but said it was all about having the right attitude.
Richard Tognetti, artistic director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, said the team was excited to have Mr Murray join the 25-person orchestra.“He’s bringing a really traditional approach. We respect the sound that he brings into the orchestra. We’re used to the sound of a didgeridoo but playing it in LA,New York and Richmond Virginia will be interesting for the audience,” he said.
Another member of the orchestra,Aboriginal musician Steve Pigram, said he was proud of Mr Murray’s achievement at such a young age.“He’s coming through that thing of performing in a reggae(popular music in the West Indies) rock band, same as what I did.But he’s got to this kind of level a little quicker.Well it’s taken me 40 years,” he said.

Harry, the first camel to arrive in Australia in 1840,was an unlucky beast. He was imported from the Canary Islands by explorer John Horrocks. On an expedition,Horrocks picked up his gun in order to shoot “a beautiful bird to be added to the collection”.Perhaps Harry was an ecologist—he lurched(突然倾斜),and the gun discharged, shooting Horrocks in the face.
Horrocks not surprisingly died of his injuries, and his teammates ordered Harry to be shot. The first importation of a camel into Australia came to naught.
At the beginning of 1860,24 camels arrived in Australia to be part of an expedition by explorers Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills. It was an unlucky expedition. The pair made one mistake after another, and ended up eating most of their camels within several months, before starving to death.
Six years later, more than 100 camels and their Afghan minders arrived in Australia. This time it succeeded and thousands more camels followed.
Sir Thomas Elder set up the first camel stud(种畜场) in South Australia, while others were set up in Western Australia. This time the camels bred like wildfire. They were used for working, rather than exploring expeditions.
The imported Afghan cameleers(骆驼夫)were just as hardy and vital, leading camel trains across the cruel interior(腹地)of Australia, where few dared to go.The camels carried heavy packs of wool and supplies and opened up the desert areas as none had managed to do before. The train that does this crossing today is called The Ghan,in their honor.
Motorization put these camel trains out of business, and many camels were turned loose. The camels loved Australia, and multiplied in amazing numbers. What is to be done with them
Not surprisingly they have become quite a tourist attraction and you can take a camel ride in the desert as the Afghan cameleers once did.But the fact is that camels create quite a problem in areas where they have taken over,as they damage local vegetation, muscle out native animals competing for food, and create chaos when they wander into settled areas.
8.What do we know about Harry
A.He caused the death of an explorer. B.He was shot by his owner.
C.He was interested in ecology. D.He was mistaken for a bird.
9.What can we infer from the passage
A.Hara Burke and William John Wills killed their camels by mistake.
B.In 1860,most of the 24 camels arriving in Australia starved to death.
C.In 1866,more than 100 camels arrived in Australia accompanied by their caretakers.
D.The first camel stud was set up in Western Australia.
10.What’s the sixth paragraph mainly about
A.Camels’ character. B.The importation of camels in Australia.
C.Camels’ contribution to Australia. D.The train that carried camels in Australia.
11.Which is the best title of the passage
A.The origin and development of camels in Australia

European researchers say they have created a process that can produce oxygen from moon dust. The process could provide a major source of oxygen for humans taking part in moon exploration activities in the future.
Researchers from the European Space Agency,or ESA,carried out the experiments at a laboratory in the Netherlands. They reported their results in a study published in Planetary and Space Science.
The team says ESA’s experimental “plant” was able to successfully produce oxygen from simulated moon dust. The dust is part of a material known as regolith(月壤),a top layer of dirt and rock pieces that sit on the surface of the moon.
Samples of regolith from the moon have confirmed that the material contains about 45 percent oxygen by weight. However, the oxygen is chemically locked in the form of minerals or glass,so it is not easily available for use.Having real samples of regolith from the moon made it possible for the researchers to create the simulated moon dust material used during testing.
The oxygen extraction(提取) process is carried out using a method called molten salt electrolysis(熔盐电解).This involves first placing the regolith in a metal container.Calcium chloride salt is added to the mixture, which is then heated to 950 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the regolith remains solid.Next,an electrical current is passed through the material. The researchers say it is this step that results in oxygen being extracted from the regolith. The study reported that up to 96 percent of oxygen in the simulated moon dust was extracted during the experiments.
ESA’s long-term goal is to design an oxygen-producing “pilot plant” to operate full-time on the moon. The first technology demonstration of the system is expected to take place in the mid-2020s.
The researchers reported that “as a bonus”,the process also results in the production of usable metallic materials.
12.What can benefit from the process
A.The treatment of some patients. B.The environment of the moon.
C.Future moon exploration activities. D.Future experiments in the laboratory.
13.Why is oxygen in the regolith hard to use
A.It exists in the form of solid. B.It only exists on the surface.
C.It is mixed with other materials. D.It is locked in a metal container.
14.What step makes oxygen extracted from the regolith
A.Adding calcium chloride salt to the mixture.
B.Placing the regolith in a metal container.
C.Passing an electrical current through the material.
D.Heating the metal container to 950 degrees Celsius.
15.What does the underlined word “simulated” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Mixed. B.Copied. C.Exposed. D.Abandoned.

What Can We See in a Logo
We see hundreds of logos on signs, vehicles, websites, and even on the clothes we wear. All of these logos are designed to attract our attention. 16 However, recently research supports the idea that remembering what a logo looks like is a very difficult task.
Researchers gave 85 students a simple assignment to draw the Apple logo purely from memory.Surprisingly, only one student in the study could accurately draw the logo from memory. 17 Researchers have developed a theory that they think might help to explain this blind spot in our memories.
Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize with a quick glance.Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them. This process is known as “attentional saturation(注意力饱和)”. 18
Even though the brain is accustomed to ignoring unnecessary details,it is also programmed for recognition. When we see images such as logos over and over again,we become familiar with them. This constant exposure leads to something scientists refer to as gist(梗概) memory. 19 This general sense of memory has its own benefits. In fact, familiarity with a popular logo can even make people feel more comfortable about purchasing or using certain products.
Logos are everywhere we look today.A fancy design or a thoughtful color combination may be a good start for a logo concept, but there are other factors to consider. 20 A clever design may be interesting, but most people will forget the details—especially if our brains have anything to say about it.
A.This may be inspiring to logo designers.
B.People will know the product behind the logo.
C.So why is it so difficult for people to recall the details of images
D.They also help us remember a product or service connected to that image.
E.It means that our brain remembers the basic idea without all of the details.
F.Our brains actually signal us to ignore information we don’t think we will need to remember.
G.Logo designers need to know that people will only remember what they believe is worthwhile.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack still remembers that one morning when he was only ten years old,he was at home with his elder sister Lily.Jack was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first,he thought nothing of it since customers’ voice in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop,” someone shouted.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Jack opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Lily, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Lily stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Jack had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Lily had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik,Malay for auntie.Lily began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Jack could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She might have run for safety like everyone else!” Jack cried. However,Lily refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain that she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door,“Go downstairs.Go now!Go!”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Just at that time,Jack noticed the flame was reaching up.
Luckily, all the neighbors went downstairs and an ambulance came.

第二节
Just at that time,Jack noticed the flame was reaching up.Frozen with fear,he stood rooted to the spot.He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. Both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging.Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes.Jack begged Lily to run for safety as quickly as possible.Lily tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door.Jack burst out crying.
Luckily, all the neighbors went downstairs and an ambulance came.A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Lily’s mind. She told them Ms.Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might.Sure enough,Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself.People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Lily and Jack were very happy.
