Learning objectives
Understand the information of the three famous theme parks and its historical and cultural knowledge.
To master the writing purpose and style of expository writing, to analyze author's writing techniques.
Write an introduction to a theme park.
Teaching Procedures
Step 1. Pre-reading
Activity 1: Brainstorm
What is a theme park
It is a kind of amusement park which has a certain theme — that the whole park is based on.
Activity 2: Brainstorm
Name some world-renowned theme parks and think about what they are famous for.
Disneyland, Chimelong Paradise Guangzhou, Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.
Step 2. Reading
Activity 3: 1.Read the text and fill in the table.
2.The table on page 32 shows the introductions to each theme park. What headers would you give for columns A to D
A Name and location
B __________________
C __________________
D __________________
Activity 4: Read the text and then decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F).
1. Disneyland can be found in several parts of the world.
2. You can meet any cartoon character you like at Disneyland.
3. Tourism develops where a Disneyland is built.
4. Dollywood is in the mountains in the southeastern USA.
5. Country music singers perform in Dollywood throughout the whole year.
Step 3. Post-reading
Activity 5: Use what you have learnt to write an introduction to a park.
Sample: Universal Studios Japan is one of the best places in the world to go to if you want to experience movie magic! One of its main highlights is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where you can visit Hogwarts and relive the magic of Harry Potter films. Minions, Spider Man, Jurassic Park, and Sesame Street are also featured in its many exciting attractions and rides, which include immersive 3-D theaters, unique rollercoasters, and a log ride through dinosaur-infested waters.
And then when you get tired, there are many different kinds of restaurants to suit all tastes, featuring classic American fare. If you want to not just see — but also touch, feel, and smell — the world of films, this is the place to be.
