Old Mrs. Lynn was working in the cottage, hanging the washed clothes on the line. What she wasn't aware of was that some children were hiding in a nearby tree, watching her every move. They were sure that she was a witch and wanted to find the evidence.
They watched nervously as she took a broomstick to sweep the dirt from her stone steps. But much to their disappointment, she didn't get on the broomstick and fly off. The old lady only looked up when her hen began to make sounds loudly—signaling that she had laid an egg in the nest on the top of the haystack (干草堆).
The old lady put aside her broomstick and walked to the haystack, followed by Michael, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap. With only three legs, it was hard for Michael to keep up with his mistress. The cat was proof for the children that only a witch would own a black cat with three legs! Accidentally, she tripped and crashed to the ground. The children were in horror.
“Should we go and help her?” asked Mia. “What if it's a trick?” replied Patrick.“She probably knows we're here. Witches know things like that !”
After thinking for a while, Julia said, “Anyway, we should go and check whether she is all right.”
Approaching prudently,__they could see a wound on the old lady's forehead. She had knocked her head on a stone and was unconscious.“Go and get Dad,” Mia yelled to her brothers.“Tell him about the accident.”
Later, in the hospital, the old lady smiled her thanks.“I was so lucky that you lovely children happened to be passing when I fell. I must have yelled quite loudly.” The children exchanged guilty glances, but were very pleased that she was not a witch after all!

It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals—although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday of Lent(大斋期), young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held“Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis' work inspired another 19th century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers from their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis' daughter Anna Jarvis who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremonies on the anniversaries and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candies. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating.“I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.
5.Who plays the most important role in developing Mother's Day
A.Ann Jarvis. B.Julia Ward Howe.
C.Woodrow Wilson. D.Anna Jarvis.
6.Why did Anna Jarvis object to Mother's Day at last
A.Because it was an emotional day.
B.Because the festival was not profitable.
C.Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
D.Because the day was buried under greeting cards and candies.
7.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.The Objection to Mother's Day
B.The Argument on Celebrating Mother's Day
C.The Story behind the Creation of Mother's Day

In India, one of the most significant festivals is Diwali, which falls between October and November. It's a five day celebration that includes good food, fireworks, colored sand, and special candles and lamps.
In honor of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, people make special prayers on the first day to obtain blessings for welfare, success, and well being. People welcome the goddess into their homes by decorating entrances with colorful lanterns and traditional designs. In addition, many people treat themselves to fine jewelry, praying for good fortune. Those who cannot afford so much, seek out cheaper items such as clothes or household goods.
The second day of the festival is called Kali Chaudas. For some, the day provides an opportunity to drive away misfortune from homes and businesses. They decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powder or sand.
The third day is when the biggest celebrations occur, which begin early in the morning with a visit to a temple to seek the blessing of the goddess. As the sun sets, festival observers light up their homes with small lamps and enjoy delicious traditional foods with their loved ones.
The festival's fourth day is celebrated in many different ways. Friends and relatives visit with gifts, sweets and best wishes for the season.
And the final day of the festival is called Bhai Oooj. It honors the close bond between brothers and sisters and is observed with traditional ceremonies and more delicious foods.

Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work in Minneapolis. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window.
“Hey!” she shouted. “I'm driving around and giving free haircuts. If I go grab my chair, do you want one right now?”
The man looked to be in his 60s. He was balding, and missing a few teeth. Hearing this, he laughed, then paused.“Actually,” he said,“I have a funeral to go to this week. I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
Steller pulled out a red chair from her car and helped the man cut his hair immediately. After the work was finished, the man looked in a mirror.“I look good!” he said.
Until last year, Steller had given such haircuts to people living on the margins(边缘) around the city. She was keenly aware of the power of her clean up job.
“It's more than a haircut,” she said.“I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships.”
Steller knew that a haircut could change a life. One changed hers: As a teen, she suffered from a severe disease, and her hair thinned drastically. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller's first professional haircut.
“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just a patient helped me feel cared and less alone,” she said.
After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way Steller felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets. Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.
“Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looked,” she said. “I think maybe I should go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can't settle their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
It all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” said Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”
5.How did Steller react to the man's words
A.She paid no attention.
B.She offered a free haircut to him.
C.She sent a red chair to him as a present.
D.She told an interesting story to make him happy.
6.What did Steller mean by saying “It's more than a haircut” in Paragraph 6
A.She thought it was a respectable job.
B.She had found more advantages of the job.
C.She could also benefit from it financially.
D.She hoped her job could make a difference to others.
7.What did Steller expect from Red Chair Project
A.To earn a lot of money.
B.To know more people.
C.To pass down the kindness.
D.To make herself stand out.
8.What would be the best title for the passage
A.A Cut Above B.A Beautiful Salon
C.The Good Belief D.The Miracle of Love

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st or January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal clothes, and they may drink champagne(香槟) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新).
Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the United States, some people eat black eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

I have happy memories of trips to Europe, but my trip to Romania (罗马尼亚) was unique. When I was there as recalled, it was like being in a James Bond movie. My husband was born there, but his family sent him to study in Italy. Before he left, his mother told him, “As long as I write in pencil, don't come back. When I write to you in pen, it's safe to return.” But she never wrote in pen.
My husband lived a poor life in Italy. He applied to go to America, but there was a limit in number and he was rejected. He was accepted by Canada, though, and from Calgary he jumped onto a train to San Francisco. There he stayed—illegally. He became a US citizen when we got married. By then he was a charming European with a Romanian accent and the manners of a prince.
With seven years' experience in America, a US passport, and two children later, he felt it was safe to visit Romania. He hadn't seen his mother, two sisters, and two brothers since he was sixteen. We flew to Munich, Germany, picked up the German made car we had purchased in the United States, and drove to Romania via Austria and Hungary. When we reached Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, his family was waiting outside his sister's house to greet us. After a long time of hugging, kissing, and crying, his family also hugged me, the American wife with two young children. They had great interest in me. Few Americans visited Romania at that time, and most Romanians had little chance to travel. I had brought an English Romanian dictionary with me and managed to communicate, using only nouns, with no verbs. My Romanian improved, and the family's stock of English words increased, but mostly I spoke in broken, New York accented Romanian. The sisters loved their gifts of skirts and purses, the brothers loved the radios, and the children loved the candies. We made side trips to the Black Sea and enjoyed sightseeing in beautiful mountains. Dining at outdoor cafes to the music of violins was fantastic with fancy flavor, but nothing was as special as family dinners.
Romania didn't have many dry cleaners. Most homes had old fashioned washing machines but no dryers, and it was a hot summer. My husband's relatives didn't want to risk dirtying their clothes. Their solution was as simple as it was shocking: the women only wore their bras(胸罩) and slips (衬裙) at dinner table. The men were eating without shirts. They all had jobs, so time was precious. Having dinner without proper clothes was a small inconvenience compared with the effort of washing clothes—at least in my husband's home, perhaps all across Romania. I, of course, having just met them, ate fully clothed. I washed my clothes by hand and hung them outdoors to dry.
On the last night of our three week stay, we had a large family dinner. I was tired of washing my clothes. So I pulled my dress over my head and placed it on the chair behind me. All men and women applauded for my action. Even with my poor Romanian, I understood that they were saying, “She's part of our family now.”
My children were 4 and 5 at the time, but they still have memories of that trip. They know how to say “Good morning.” and “There are apricots (杏子) on the tree.” I can still say,“Do you speak Romanian ”and “I swim in the Black Sea.” But most of all, I remember sitting at a long dining table in my bra, enjoying meatballs with fresh garlic.

Food festivals around the world
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50 metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane (赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones ). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
Fiery Food and BBQ Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
