Lesson 9A Unit6 Study Skills: How to read a newspaper
Learning analysis Reading newspapers is not only a way for students to learn about the world, but plays a role in helping them to learn a second language. However, as teenagers with limited self-learning abilities, most students don’t really know how to read a newspaper wisely and efficiently. Thus, to teach the students proper ways and skills becomes a necessity.
Objectives Enable the students to learn and understand the basic characteristics of newspapers.Enrich the students’ skills of reading newspaper articles.Encourage the students to use a reading map to read newspapers wisely and efficiently.

Steps Activities Intentions
Step one:Why newspapers By discussing about the advantages of newspapers, students are inspired to consider about the unique characteristics of newspapers. To introduce the four unique characteristics of newspapers: They usually have pictures and headlines. They not only provide us with information, but also helps us with language learning.
Step Two:Pictures catch your eyes Among the four special pictures taken from the newspapers, pick one that catches the eyes most and explain why.Match the pictures with the related headlinesConclude about the characteristics of a headline.Improve the given headlinesOpen your mind and entitle the given picture To arouse the students’ interest in reading a newspaper, especially by talking about the funny pictures.To train their ability of putting together the picture and headline that belong to the same topic.Enable students to practice the skill of improving a headline and even creating a suitable and perfect headline for a certain picture.
Step Three:Headlines tell stories Introduce different types of articles appearing in a newspaper.Match the headlines with the correct types.Quick-Quiz about five short news articles, including the questions of what, who, where, how, and when. To enrich the students’ understanding of newspaper articles.To practice the students’ skills of fast reading.To improve their ability of locating the key information.
Step Four:Information Read a newspaper article, and find out the key information. (five questions)Show the students the upside down triangle.Reorder some pieces of information according to the triangle formWork out a theme word for the reordered article. Step Five:Language 1) Read a short complete newspaper article . And work out a word bank for that certain topic. 1) To provide the students with a key reading habit and skill---the way to enlarge one’s vocabulary by reading.
Step Six;Summary Work out the key tips of reading a newspaper To get the students’ mind organized before consolidation.
Step Seven:A reading map Follow the steps on the working sheet and finish the exercise step-by-step. The well-designed work sheet shows a clear reading map of how to read a newspaper wisely and efficiently. This reading map involves all the skills and tips mentioned in this lesson. It not only helps the students to read, to understand and to analyze a newspaper article, it also inspires the students to think deeply after reading.
