一、阅读理解
A
My mother was never truly happy in Connecticut finding the winter bitter cold and the culture provincial (偏狭的). Though she grew up in New Jersey, she moved to San Francisco in her early twenties, met and married my dad out there. After I was born, they decided to return east, closer to their own parents. But she never let go of her love for the Bay Area.
California was always part of the conversation when I was a kid. I ate meals off a map-of-the-world placemat (餐垫), and Mom taught me to identify San Francisco before I learned where Hartford was. She told us stories of perfection on a single city, fantasizing about retiring out west. My dad would play along, but his heart wasn’t in the same place.
While my mother’s status in the nonprofit world advanced, her desire to move back to her favorite place grew strong. She applied for jobs in the Bay, underwent bicoastal Skype screenings, even traveled out for a couple of interviews on a whim (心血来潮). Sometimes her cover letters disappeared, other times she made it down to the final two candidates. With each rejection, she promised to make her next job application even stronger.
This past May, I relocated from San Francisco to New York for a job. A few weeks later, Mom called me. Her pursuit had finally paid off. She’s been offered a vice president position at a public health nonprofit in Oakland. A few weeks later, she packed up her baggage and left Connecticut for good.
Our lives are more semblable than ever these days. We’re both discovering our new homes, making friends. We’re looking for a good yoga studio to join, reading the same books and chatting about the plots by text message. I emailed her photos from my trip to Burning Man and she replied with stories about her new coworkers who go every year. There’s even time for the occasional dating disaster.
Perhaps that’s the paradox (悖论) of growing older. Things will always change, and they can change immediately—my mother is proof. But an individual’s own power to create change always stays the same. Everything can change, and therefore nothing ever really changes.
Now when I’m out west for a visit, Mom meets me at a station with her big bag. We stop by the Grand Lake farmers market, picking out the freshest seasonal ingredients, before hiking up the hill to her new apartment. One of these days, I’ll actually cook her dinner.

One day, when I was going to check in at an airport, I noticed there was a big problem. The counter person was telling everyone that all the planes were having problems and they would not be able to fly! And it was suggested that a bus would be provided to take us to Seattle. Everyone was worried, as we only had an hour and a half to make the connecting flight, and the bus was not even at the airport yet.
Finally, the bus pulled up, and the driver said, “They just pulled me out of bed after an all-night shift (夜班), and they expect me to get you to Seattle in time to catch your flight. Good Luck!”
Needless to say, everyone was in a really bad mood. I was loading my luggage into the bus and had slung (吊) my banjo over my back when the driver said, “What Are you going to play that in my bus ” “Well, really did not plan on it,” I replied. “I was only kidding,” said the driver. But I started thinking about it, and I pulled out the banjo. A worried, angry woman said, “Well, what if I don't like it ” “Then tell me and I will stop,” I replied.
We drove off, and the tension (紧张) made the atmosphere in the bus horrendous! Then I started plucking (弹奏) the old song Blue Skies. In a few minutes, I noticed everyone was singing along. I started to sing, too, and before long, the whole bus burst into song.
One song led to another and everyone seemed to have a request. “Do you know You Are My Sunshine ” Everyone laughed and sang, with food passed around the bus, and before long, the airport was in sight.
The bus driver called, “We made it! We never would have done it without the help of our banjo player.” Shouts of approval rang through the bus. The driver said to me, “This was the best ride I ever had. Thanks for your music.”
A few weeks later, my mailbox was filled with letters from my new friends. Their letters reminded me of how, by reaching out with just a song, you can turn a very tense situation into a peaceful experience-a magical, musical bus ride.

I can't stop thinking about the video of a 10-ycar-old girl facing her fears at the top of a ski jump. Her fear, her courage, her joy, her pride-the whole thing has really struck a chord (触动心弦) in me. Of course, the video makes me reflect on the times when I experienced the similar feelings. I remember how in those moments every cell in my body vibrated (颤动) with life. But it also reminded me of the times I didn't choose the more risky options.
I've always been a little bit of a chicken when it comes to my physical safety but I definitely pushed myself more when I was younger. Now that I'm a mom, I feel like I have to stay safe. I worry about what my kids would do without me and that leads me to make safe choices.
But as I watch this fourth grader overcome her fears, I think about how much this experience will mean to her in the future; she'll always have this as a reference point when she comes up against something scary or difficult. She'll be able to look back on this and say, “Well, I did that and the worst part was the bad feeling at the beginning.”
I know I want that view for my 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. I know I want them to take risks. Maybe not every day, maybe not ski-jumping, definitely not extreme sports, but I deeply hope that they will push themselves to their limits, facing down fear with whatever tools they can use and enjoying the great rush that comes from attempting scary things and getting to the other side of them.
So if I want that for my kids, I have to honestly look at my own relationship with risk and say that yes... I play it safe. And I have to ask myself another question: Am I doing enough Or do I need to make some changes in-my life so that my daughter and son can be inspired to make their own brave decisions
10.How did the author react when watching that video
A.She felt ashamed of herself. B.She realized that sport was dangerous.
C.She thought of her own past experiences. D.She regretted taking part in some risky activities.
11.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 most probably refer to
A.Making safe choices is important. B.Taking a risk isn't as scary as it seems.
C.Taking a risk can make you feel bad. D.Overcoming fears requires a long time.
12.The author most probably thinks that she should ___________.
A.let her kids play with the girl in the video.
B.certainly allow her kids to try ski-jumping.
C.use some tools to practice her kids' courage.
D.participate in more risky activities to set an example.
13.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Pushing ourselves to our limits B.Paying attention to kids' activities
C.Learning a kind of risky activity D.Encouraging kids to choose what they like

When Narayanswami was invited to a dinner by a friend who worked at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, she was excited. Many of the guests flew planes. “I must have expressed some yearning(渴望),”she says, because someone told her “You should join the flying club!” The next day Narayanswami, who was 57 at the time, arranged to meet an instructor. “I said ‘Aren’t I too old ” He said “We’ve got students in their 80s.”
Narayanswami grew up in Southwest London, and at grammar school suffered horrific racist bullying. The library provided shelter. But, as she reached her late teens, she feel family pressure for an arranged marriage; “I really protested,” she says. “But I want to be an astronaut! My mother made a promise. As long as you are getting an education we will not look for a husband for you.”
Narayanswami studied biology at Leicester University, then did a PhD at St Andrew, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of California. “Every time you move you get further away,” her dad remarked on the phone. “I didn’t feel I would be able t escape unless I did that,” she says.
In 2020, aged 64, Narayanswami finished 423 light hours she needed to earn her pilot's license. Then she applied to Nasa’s astronaut corps, but received a very appreciative rejection. New possibilities have arisen—Narayanswami chairs the board of the General Aviation Awards in the US—but she finds relaxing difficult. In light, she is part of a huge network of people who are communicating by radio frequency. There is no sense of skin colour. We are all tied together by our voices.

What’s more, my parents are both teachers and they both speak standard Chinese, which can help you learn Chinese well.
Looking forward to your early reply.
