M:Hello, everyone. It is indeed a great pleasure to have this chance to address such a large audience this evening.I’m Pierre Chabrol from the University of Marseille. At the moment I’m carrying out a research in Senegal for the United Nations as part of the project to increase the world food production. Before I get on to what exactly we did in our research,I would like to explain briefly the purpose behind it.Quite simply my subject is rice.As you all know, rice is the main food for millions of people in the world. So if rice crops fail, millions of people starve and die.And they do fail, very often through disease.
Now what my colleagues and I have been doing out in the field in Senegal as well as in the university laboratories is to try to produce a disease-resisting variety of rice,a particular kind of rice which will resist disease,in other words,a stronger type of rice.

I always feel sorry for world leaders busy dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a battlefield.
It got worse as they grew older.Three years ago,Zack, then 16,couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters,Alex 11 and Taryn 9,angry.
My husband and I tried to be understanding the boy at such an age.We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was “I say it because it’s true.”
I even tried telling the girls to fight back.Bad idea. Now I had three children at war.Whatever I said to them, they paid no attention. When there was no way out,I told everything to my sister,Mary,in an e-mail.She replied,“Don’t e-mail me.E-mail him.”
Our son was online every day, mailing and talking with his friends.Maybe he would actually hear me this way.I didn’t say anything different, but e-mail just took the tension away. There’d be no shouting or door banging.Zack wouldn’t feel under attack.
Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did,his entire message was four small words.I smiled when I read them:“You’re right.I’m sorry.”
The children still fought,of course, but Zack changed.Best of all,I now have a better way to talk with not one but three of them.I like it that they don’t tune me out as much as they used to.They don’t like having to listen to me shouting to them.Or as Alex says,“You’re so much nicer online.”

Do you use Meta,MySpace or Twitter If so,then you are part of a social network.Social networking sites allow us to see our social connections.
When you create a profile (a description of somebody that gives useful information) on a social networking site, you open up a number of possible social connections. You can look up old friends, make new friends, and share music, photos and videos with them.
Setting up a social networking account is simple. You just create and post a personal profile. For this you need a login name, and an e-mail account. Then you add some personal information such as name, age, sex, location, interests, etc. You can also add a photo of yourself. You can control who sees your profile. The next step is to look for new ones, and add them to your network. Then you can search your friends’ connections for anyone else you’d like to add to your network.

As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn’t grow up with them. They don’t have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn’t work or where to go for help.We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential and we are designing it.The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies, news and music,is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement at home and they aren’t always close to their friends.Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail.She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3.She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53,when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her.But before then, her friends couldn’t call her on the phone,so they suggested she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don’t even think of the Internet as technology. It’s just there, and they use it.There’s been a very interesting change in communication styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren’t willing to make phone calls. And they think e-mail is old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don’t make phone calls seems to be that they don’t know what to say. When they call, they often stop for a while and there’s a silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it’s okay if you don’t answer. You might have been distracted. It’s not rude. But it is strange if you’re in this kind of conversation and simply stop talking.
12.What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet
A.They don’t know how to use some applications.
B.They have to buy electronic productions at a high price.
C.There is no professional teacher to teach them how to use the Internet.
D.They have no friends to communicate with online.
13.What do the young people think of the Internet according to the passage
A.Interesting. B.Amazing.
C.Boring. D.Common.
14.What can we infer from the passage about the author
A.He is a company manager.
B.He is a program designer.
C.He is a college professor.
D.He is a mobile phone seller.
15.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean
A.You have replied the message.
B.You have walked away from the conversation.
C.You have been cut off.
D.You have asked for a pardon.

第二节(满分25分)

I grew up in a small town where elementary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age,not so long ago, when we children could go home for lunch and find our mothers waiting. At the time,I didn’t consider this to be so important, although today it certainly would be.Actually, our lunchtime together in the past years had had a great influence on my life before I realized it.
Our lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.I had been picked to be the princess in the school play and for weeks my mother had painstakingly practiced my lines with me.But no matter how easily I delivered them at home,as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained patiently that she needed a narrator and had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to play the role of the narrator. Her words, kindly delivered, still hurt me especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my upset, and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green.Under the huge trees,we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) appearing unexpectedly through the grass in bunches,as if a painter had touched our landscape with small amounts of gold.I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bushes.“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a blossom up by all its roots.“From now on,we’ll only have roses in this garden.”I immediately argued,“But I like dandelions. All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty ” asked my mother thoughtfully.

Having learned what had happened,Mom patted me on the back gently and said,“but you will be a beautiful narrator.”

第三部分 写作
第一节
Which would you give up:TV,Phone or Web
We are now living in an information age,in which TV,phones and the web are widely used.It seems that many people cannot enjoy themselves with them.
However,if I had to give up one of them,I would turn off TV rather than switch off my phone or cut off the Internet.I could do without TV because most programs on TV are also available elsewhere.
As for phones and the web,I need a phone to keep in touch with my friends and family, and almost all information can be gathered on the Internet.
第二节
“Do you mean that every flower has its own beauty ”asked my mother thoughtfully.I nodded without hesitation,as if a second wasted could threaten the life of dandelions.“The same to you,” she added, her voice soft.“Not everyone can be a rose, and it is also an honor to be a dandelion.” Knowing that my mother had realized my pain,I took off the mask that I had worn for the whole lunchtime and poured out my upset heartily.
Having learned what had happened,Mom patted me on the back gently and said,“but you will be a beautiful narrator.”She reminded me of how fluently I could deliver my part at home.It was at that time that I understood that maybe I was more suitable for a role backstage like a narrator. From then on,I practiced my lines heart and soul with my mother at lunchtime for weeks.Eventually, the performance that night was a big success.Hearing the thunderous applause,I took pride in my role and firmly believed that even a dandelion had its own beauty.
