Most people would shake at the idea of getting caught up in a 73.5-foot wave. But for Brazilian surfer Maya,it presented the perfect opportunity to break her former world record. The athlete skillfully managed the monster earlier this year,at the first World Surf League(WSL) Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge in Praia do Norte,Portugal, which was the same site where she established her 2018 world record by riding a 68-foot wave.
“Although I say I’m not a competitive person,I was very excited and braver than I usually am on this day,”said Maya. When I let go of the rope,I had a feeling that this was probably the biggest wave I’d ever ridden. It turned out that Maya’s 73.5-foot monster was two feet higher than that of her competitor’s wave, earning her WSL’s 2020 women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award. It was also 3.5 feet higher than the 70-foot wave ridden by the 2020 men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award winner Kai Lenny!
The 33-year old believes her achievement may be a turning point in the understanding of the ability of women surfers.“Our sport is very male-dominated,with the performances on the male side often much stronger than ours as females,”she told The Atlantic. So Maya’s success opens the idea that there are other possibilities.
Though Maya seemed to effortlessly ride over the monster surf,it has not all been smooth sailing. Her first attempt at pursuing the world’s biggest waves in 2013 could have ended the career of someone with less determination. The surfer suffered a deadly wipeout that broke her ankle and almost killed her. However, the minor difficulty did not remove her love for the extreme sport and her desire to be one of the world’s greatest surfers!

A.She intended to challenge herself.
B.She had a burning desire to win.
C.She was eager to revisit Praia do Norte,Portugal.
D.She aimed to prove herself braver than most people.
9.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Maya was rather nervous during the Challenge.
B.Maya surfed the biggest, tallest wave of the year.
C.Maya completed the Challenge with the help of a rope.
D.Maya was quite sure of her new record during the Challenge.
10.What’s the significance of Maya’s success
A.It made her the greatest female surfer in the world.
B.It brought her fame and fortune she had dreamed of.
C.It completely broke the male-dominated situation in surfing.
D.It showed women surfers can do as well as men,or even better.
11.Which of the following best describes Maya

Watching a young,21-year-old Jordan Spieth win the US Masters today,I could not help but think of the great qualities he displayed to win the most famous golf event on the calendar against the greatest players in the world.
Jordan Spieth has learned to keep himself in check. There is a great proverb:A fool shares all his or her feelings while a wise man keeps them in check. As I watched Spieth playing,I noticed a constant calm around him.Whether he hit the shot he wanted or not,he was the same and kept his emotions steady and strong. He never blamed the crowd, clubs or wind.
He knows which club he is going to drive with on every hole;he knows which side of the fairway(高尔夫球道) to land and exactly where he wants to be standing on every green when he is putting;he has played it through his minds for months. He is the person who makes things happen by planning in advance.Winning is not a fluke(侥幸击中);it’s a by-product of months and years of planning.Nothing happens by chance.
If there is an event that every golfer dreams of winning,it’s the US Masters. So,how would Spieth have felt in 2014 getting so close to winning but coming second As good as second was,he only wanted to be first. The difference between great shots and poor shots at the Masters is only inches. In that 2014 final round,Spieth was standing on the 8th hole with a 2-shot lead, but through a number of small misses he lost it and never recovered it.However,he never stops learning. As a great person once said,“While you’re green, you’re growing;when you’re brown, you’re dying.” He stays green. He is always reading, learning, and he understands that the greatest teacher of all is failure.
12.Which description is suitable for Jordan Spieth
A.He likes to share his feelings.
B.He can control himself properly.
C.He is a man of great knowledge.
D.He usually uses sayings when speaking.
13.What does the third paragraph want to tell about Jordan Spieth
A.He always has a game plan and sticks to it.
B.He never does anything until it really happens.
C.He usually decides on a club to join in advance.
D.He can’t bear losing the chance of winning a game.
14.How did Jordan Spieth feel in the 2014 Masters
A.Doubtful. B.Satisfied.
C.Curious. D.Inspired.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.Feelings of losing the US Masters.
B.Sports qualities of Jordan Spieth.
C.Basic skills of winning a golf game.
D.Golfers’ dreams of joining the Masters.

Most people think Chinese martial arts are all about kicking, punching and fighting. 16 It is slow, calm and peaceful.
Tai chi dates back to the mid-17th century in Wenxian county in Henan Province.UNESCO recently added it to its intangible Cultural Heritage List.Although tai chi is an ancient martial art,it is still quite popular today. 17
People do tai chi as a way to stay fit.Unlike other exercises,it is “soft” —the muscles are not tensed, the joints are not fully bent, and you don’t need to stretch your body too much.
18 You can practice it almost anytime and anywhere without equipment. It is believed that practicing tai chi can help us have better control of our bodies so that we can stand, walk and run better.
19 You can control them better.Slow movements also allow you to take deep, long breaths. This is good for your bodies.
But tai chi’s benefits go beyond the physical. 20 Tai chi has taught them the value of living more slowly.Just as a Peruvian woman who has practiced tai chi for more than 10 years says,“Practicing tai chi is like speaking with my soul.”
A.This means many can do it.
B.But tai chi is the other way around.
C.It’s a practical way for one to further balance.
D.You need to keep a healthy balance in all things.
E.It has over 100 million fans in more than 150 countries.
F.For some people,it’s not only a sport,but also a way of life.
G.During slow movements, you can concentrate on your hands and feet.

Saving the Galaxy
I pressed my face to the school bus window as we passed the big movie screen.Galaxy Drive-In(银河汽车影院) one sign said.CLOSED said another.
I got off the bus at my stop and waved to Mom.I asked her about that drive-in down the street as we walked into the house.Mom told me that it had closed a couple years before.
But that night,I heard music coming through my window. When I looked out,I could see lights flashing on the drive-in’s screen. The thought of fear crossed my mind.
The next day, after breakfast Mom and I walked over to check things out.The place was like a big parking lot with weeds coming out through cracks. We were looking at an old movie poster when an old man got out of a car.
He introduced himself as Nick.“When my dad opened this place in 1957,we’d get 300 cars on a good night, but now I have to close it because I can’t afford a digital projector(放映机),which is very expensive.” Nick explained that all movie companies just provide digital movies instead of film(胶片) movies. Then Nick allowed us to look around and invited us to come by before dusk.
That night,Nick made an old movie come to life.As I sat next to Mom,I kept thinking about the excitement of seeing that big screen light up.Nick had looked so happy talking about the old days.If only he could get that projector.

It was then that a big idea came to me.What about crowdfunding online I put a post without any delay. In the post,I talked about Nick’s dream and his present financial difficulty, especially the excitement and sweet memories that the drive-in once brought.Gradually, the post was followed by an increasing number of people. They donated generously and in less than a week enough money was raised.
With the collected money,Nick bought a digital projector. He was so glad that he couldn’t wait to play a movie.I’ve never seen Nick happier.“See what you started,” Nick said to me.“I can’t thank you enough. It is you and those warm-hearted supporters that have made Galaxy Drive-In begin to breathe again.” Today, the Galaxy is back in business and Nick has realized his dream:He gets 300 cars on a good night.
