Long ago, poems were recited loud instead of being written down. Back when the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.
Now, poetry competitions have been revived (恢复). This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prize money.
The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to school wide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington D.C. last week for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another, 12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to “perform” a poem. The overall champ, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud, because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.
It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. “Each time we hear somebody recite a poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” said National Public Radio Broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listeners.
Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, but memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants (选手) understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn public speaking skills that can help them for life.

Limericks (五行打油诗) are usually humorous, and have five lines: the first two rhyme, the two in the middle rhyme, and the last line rhymes with the first two lines. Here is how to write a limerick.
Pick what you would like your limerick to be about. It could be about mice, a tree, a person, or whatever.
________ Don't end it with something you can't rhyme—like “orange”. Start it like “There once was a man who ate limes (酸橙)” or something like that.
Your next line has to rhyme with the first line. If you use “There once was a man who ate limes”, your second line could be like “He ate them all the time” or “And sampled various wines”. Your limerick would now be like There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines.
The third and fourth lines have to be related to the first part of your limerick, but are not with the same rhyme. They could be like, He wouldn't touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes or something along those lines.
The fifth line must rhyme with the first two lines. Your last line could be like, “And potatoes, you know, do not shine” or something like that.
Your entire limerick would be kind of like this: There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines/He wouldn't touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes/And potatoes, you know, do not shine.
If you don't like your limerick, you can always go back and change it. It's not permanent.

A.The length. B.Rhyme.
C.The structure. D.Style.

A qualified doctor who rarely practised but instead devoted his life to writing once said, “Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my lover.” Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a great playwright (剧作家) and one of the masters of the modern short story.
When Chekhov entered the Medical School of Moscow University in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.
As a writer he was extremely fast—often produced a short story in an hour or less. Chekhov's medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference many of his characters show to tragic (悲惨的) events. In 1892, he became a full time writer and published some of his most memorable stories.
Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of civilians in small towns of Russia. Tragic events controlled his characters who were filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.
It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov's stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters. Chekhov's works combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity of an artist.
Some of Chekhov's works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s. One of his famous stories, “The Man in a Shell”, about a school teacher's extraordinarily orderly life was selected as a text for Chinese senior students.

Anyone can write a baby poem, and everyone enjoys reading it, the young and the old. Baby shower (婴儿洗礼) poems can have rhythm and rhyme, but they certainly don't have to. Poems can be either long or short, but short poems are probably best for your typical baby shower needs. You can add a little humor as well!
The people who are most often touched by baby shower poems are those who have had children themselves. Sweet poems can remind them of the time when their little ones were still young. No one will appreciate them more than the family members themselves. If you are a creative writer or have a special talent for putting words together in a special way, then you should try writing your own baby shower poems. This would make a great gift idea as well.
If you decide to write your own baby poems, even common things can inspire you. Inspiration can be found anywhere. Look back on your own memories from the past. What was special about your childhood What special object have you treasured over the years What words of wisdom (智慧) could you pass on to the next generation Look around the house and imagine a baby being there. What do you see, hear, or feel Let those thoughts be the sources of your best baby poems.
When writing a baby poem, you do not have to write like Shakespeare, and you just have to be sincere. Years later when the baby has grown, think of how special they will feel knowing the words were just for them.
If you are not the creative type—don't worry! There are lots of places online where you can look for poems saying just the things you want to say. Poems have been written on all subjects throughout the ages, and baby poems and baby shower poems are no exception. A quick search online doesn't have to take any time at all.

There were many famous poets from different eras in Chinese history, and thousands of their poems are still read and appreciated today.
To arouse people's interest in those classic Chinese poems and promote cultural heritage, China Central Television (CCTV) produced a TV show— the Chinese Poetry Competition. The finale (终场) of the hit show's second season was shown on Feb. 7.
Wu Yishu, 16, who studies at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, came out on top. In an earlier episode (一集), Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section entitled “Feihualing”. The game's theme was “yue”, meaning “moon” or “month” in Chinese. She recited the lines from the Classic of Poetry, the earliest collection of poems in China: “In July, the crickets (蟋蟀) are in the field. In August, they are in the yard. In September, they are at the door. In October, they enter and crawl under our beds.”
“I really admire her knowledge of poems,” said Huang Zijin, 16, a Senior 2 student from Ningbo High School in Zhejiang Province. “The first time I saw her wearing traditional Han clothing on TV, I was very impressed by her classical looks. She fulfills all my fantasies about classic Chinese women's talents. What's more, she always appears so calm throughout the show, which is very unusual for her age.”
As the old saying goes, “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance.”
“Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one's view of life and developing one's inner world,” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Competition's second season.
When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show's academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic (美学的) and emotional sides, and guide the students to lose themselves in the poems' rhythmic (有节奏的) and rhyming lines.
“Although the amount of ancient Chinese poetry in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,” Li Dingguang told China.. “Therefore, it's important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.”

In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.” Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters—from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon (名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.
How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to 1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half dozen of them. It's partly true that Dickens' style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It's partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it's also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a distinguished writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible—and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one.

Xiao Yu is already quite the traveler, having been to Russia a couple of times. She is just 4 years old. However, Yu is not a normal tourist, her visits to the Black Sea coastal resort of Sochi being about much more than rest and recreation, for Yu is autistic (自闭症的). And in Sochi she met a very special kind of specialist. That specialist is a dolphin, and contacting with it is said to be beneficial to children like Yu.
Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social communication. Though many children with autism are able to live normal lives, in some severe cases autistic children may have trouble learning to speak or make eye contact. With the help of professional doctors, the children play games with the dolphins and receive treatment.
Dolphin assisted treatment is not without controversy,_there being no scientific evidence of its benefits, even if it is argued that the communicative experience for the children can be of no harm, and animal welfare activists object to the way animals are forced into their role as therapists (治疗专家). However, even if Yu's mother is aware of such objections, she talks enthusiastically of the progress she thinks Yu has made since the first travel to Sochi.
That program, in which Chinese children with autism visit Sochi to receive dolphin assisted treatment, is supported by the government of Sochi and the China Foundation for Disabled Persons. It was first held in October, 2018 and again in mid June to July of the next year. More than 10 children from China have now visited Sochi to receive dolphin assisted treatment and have had very positive results, says Anatoly Pakhomov, the former mayor of Sochi.
“We hope the Sochi government and the China Foundation for Disabled Persons can establish a more stable long term partnership, and we will continue to provide the necessary assistance and support,” Pakhomov said.
