It was the beginning of another school year. I had agreed to teach all struggling students in need of critical intervention (介入). I knew what lay ahead—tough work hours overlaid with guilt, consumed with essays that needed feedback and lesson plans with best practice strategies. No wonder people always acknowledge my teaching career with, “I'm_glad_it's_you_and_not_me._”
Suddenly, my mind transported me to my first few years of teaching.
“Peter Potter,” I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter.“Laughlin McLaughlin?” Surely these were not real names.
“Emotionally disabled ... keeps them separated from the other kids...,” the vice headmaster commanded. This was my first teaching assignment.
Surely this year could never be as discouraging as those first few. In my new classroom, I looked into the face of Jason. At eleven, his mother was killed in an accident, leaving him with physical, academic, and certainly emotional scars. I looked at another student, Robert, standing at the door; my vice headmaster asked if I would take him, even though he was an eleventh grader in my tenth grade class.
But then there were—and are—stories of success—of Dustin,in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Willie ... I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have touched mine far more than I could have ever touched theirs.
I broke from my daydream, a smile spreading across my face. Sadness, tears, challenges, fears—yes, teaching is filled with all of these—yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure.
“I'm glad it's you and not me.” Those words resounded in my mind once again.

Choosing what you want to do with the rest of your life can be challenging, here are some suggestions on how to choose a college major that you will enjoy.
Let your core classes help you choose a major
If you are still in high school, take a look at each of your classes and identify which ones you enjoy most. If you're going back to college after starting your career, think back to your best high school classes (e.g. math,biology,history,etc.). This can help you identify your strengths and interests so you can narrow your list of possible university degree programs to a particular field of study.
Prioritize (划分优先顺序) your career wants and needs
First and foremost,a college major should be chosen based on your interests and career goals. However,it is not uncommon for students to select their majors based on the careers of their parents or siblings (兄弟姐妹). If following in their footsteps is not right for the student, then it will likely lead to an unfulfilling education and career.
When choosing a major,it is important to identify what aspects of a career are most important to you (money, creative freedom, helping people, working outdoors,etc.). Making a list of your top priorities will shed plenty of light on which degree or major is best for you. Also, talk to your parents and siblings about the choices they made and whether they think those majors and careers would be a good fit for you.
Additional tips for choosing majors
Seeking outside advice, not just from family members,is always recommended when choosing a college major. Talk with career counselors, high school teachers, guidance counselors and students who currently enrolled in a major you are interested in. Speaking to professors at universities or to professionals in the field can also give you a good idea of what you might expect from a career.
There are also tests you can take that give an insight into career matches, dominant personality characters and key interests. While a test should not dictate your choices,it can offer you a new perspective on yourself and open your eyes to majors and career prospects you didn't consider.
5.Where does the support for your particular field of study mainly come from
A.The college courses that you enjoy most.
B.Every class in your high school.
C.The beginning of your career.
D.Your best high school subjects.
6.The last two paragraphs are mainly to discuss________.
A.advice from others and tests
B.the careers of parents and siblings
C.suggestions from parents
D.professionals' ideas about majors
7.What would be the best title for the passage
A.My View on College Education
B.How to Choose the Best College Major for You
C.Learning to Challenge Career Goals
D.Offering You a New Perspective on Yourself

When she was a little girl, Margarita Engle spent her summers in Cuba, where she says she fell in love with nature.
Engle, 66, was born to a Cuban mother and an American father. Her annual visits to the Caribbean island from her home in California shaped her life and inspired her to become a poet and writer. The Poetry Foundation named her as Young People's Poet Laureate, a role Engle plans to use to encourage children and teenagers to write down their feelings.
Magic happens when you put your emotions in writing, she said.
Engle says she has always liked poetry. At age 6, she wrote her first poem about nature. After looking around while taking a walk one day in California, she wrote a rhymed poem about the shapes of hills. As a teen, she wrote sonnets ( 十四行诗 ) about nature and stories about people in Cuba.
Some of her books explore the island, its people, markets and landmarks. Her new picture book, All the Way to Havana, features American cars from the 1940s and 1950s. Forest World, a new novel, introduces Edver, an 11 year old who lives in Miami, Florida, with his mother and is shipped off to Cuba to see his birthplace and meet his Cuban family, to readers. When he arrives in Havana, the capital, he learns he has an older sister, Luza, who stays on the island with her father and grandfather. The two go on an adventure into a Cuban forest.
The emotions of the characters are similar to what many children feel when they are separated from loved ones, Engle said. She hopes that people facing similar challenges can find support and comfort in poetry.
