When I was growing up, Father Christmas played an important part in my family's Christmas tradition.
Each year my parents would feed us a light meal, make sure we put on our new pajamas (睡衣), and put us to bed. Father Christmas himself was going to leave presents at night! A few hours later, my mom would wake us up telling us to hurry up because he was getting ready to leave. With our eyes barely (勉强地) open, we would go down the stairs and Father Christmas would meet us at the bottom of the stairs by name, tell us how good we were that year, and hand us each a present. In all the excitement, we didn't realize that our dad was missing until he walked in the door.
When I was 8 years old, my mom very gently (温柔地) and lovingly told me that Father Christmas was just a fun story. She then asked me to never tell my younger sisters or any of the other kids in our family. She believed every child should decide on their own when they were ready to move on and know the truth about Father Christmas. It was a promise I have kept all these years.
Until this year.
My youngest is 10, and I thought other children might make fun of him if he were to say Father Christmas was real. So I gently mentioned that there really wasn't a man who lived in the North Pole.
“Oh, okay. I know that.”
I then told him not to ever tell anyone else, especially his two cousins, who at 7 and 5 still believe. I didn't want him to blow my father's cover.
“Mom, I know Father Christmas is Grandpa and I won't say anything to them.”
It then dawned on ( 开始明白) me that for my children, Father Christmas would always be real. For them, he was their grandfather who took the time each year to dress up and their grandmother helped him get ready so that their Christmas could be a little more special. My mother was right; Christmas is the spirit of love and giving.

The past two years, instead of my favourite maple-frosted donut ( 枫糖霜甜甜圈) cake, I had one birthday request from my family — hiking ( 远足) and a picnic together. Thankfully, it was my special day, so they only rolled their eyes and sighed once and then agreed to come along — exploring new places and discovering hidden waterfalls.
That was the past two years. That's not today.
Today is my birthday, and I'm on the other side of the world. I wish that I could hang out with my family and friends in the US. Just for today — on my birthday.
We are “lonely internationals.” It's hard. I won't pretend ( 假装) it's not.
My mother, “Nana” to my four boys, tells me regularly how she has missed almost all of her grandsons' birthday celebrations. She intentionally ( 有意地) connects with them through texts and FaceTime on their birthdays so that she can join us for the time of singing “Happy Birthday” and SEE the kids blow out their candles.
However, that is not the same as “being there” physically — together. She feels like she misses our major life milestones called “birthdays.”
Today, I'm okay. My mother had made an e-card for me, sent to my email box early this morning. She never forgets. My in-laws, my sister and her family, my sweet friend in France, and my dear friends here in Spain and over there in the US have already wished me “Happy Birthday” online. Some even mailed me cards and gifts across the sea.
The only “gifts” I'm missing are maple-frosted donuts for a birthday cake. My mother tried to bring them to me in Europe when she travelled to visit me. However, after a 20-hour trip across the sea, they weren't so fresh anymore.
Tonight, we will have a special dinner outside on our back porch in the cool, evening air. I will blow out A LOT of candles on my birthday cake.
I am happy. I have breath, life, a heartbeat, and deep inner joy from the love of my family and friends around the world.

An Olympic Village is a place that houses Olympic competitors. It is a place where they prepare for what might be the most important moment in their life. But we want to know more about this mysterious (神秘的) place: What really happens in the village
We asked swimmer Natalie Coughlin, a three-time Olympian and 12-time medalist. She says, “People think it's a lot more attractive and interesting than it is. It isn't. It's like a huge college campus, including a bank, a salon, a post office, and a huge cafeteria — except that everyone is anxious ( 焦虑的), getting ready for their biggest event under unbelievably high pressure.”
But some other Olympians look differently at their campus. “It's like the first day of college,” water polo player Tony Azevedo says. “You're super excited. Everyone's meeting people and trying to socialize with others.”
Coughlin says the best spot to be in the village is the cafeteria. Not only does it provide a place to talk with the rest of the athletes from your country, but it's a great chance for people-watching. One of her favorite games was to tell what sport someone in front of her took based on their body type.
Living in the same village means athletes run into one another all the time. Coughlin shares this story: While in London in 2012, at one point applause ( 欢呼) broke out at the arrival of someone. Coughlin thought it was one of the British royals ( 王室成员), but it ended up being Jamaica's Usain Bolt (the world's greatest runner alive). Runner Allyson Felix — a winner of six gold Olympic medals — has also had her run-ins. In 2008, she came across the world-famous U. S. men's basketball team, including Anthony, Bryant, Wade and other top players.
It's “a pretty wild scene, the biggest melting pot — a place where large numbers of people, ideas, and cultures are mixed together — you've been in,” said swimmer Eric Shanteau. Felix agrees, saying, “You get to meet people from other countries that you wouldn't even come into contact with. To me that's the coolest thing.”
32. What does Coughlin say about the Olympic villagers
A. They are very nervous.
B. They like to make friends.
C. They enjoy the village very much.
D. They spend most of their time relaxing.
33. What did Coughlin often do at the cafeteria in the Olympic Village
A. She often spent time with basketball players.
B. She often tasted food from other countries.
C. She often listened to other athletes' stories.
D. She often tried guessing a person's sport.
34. What do both Coughlin and Felix tell us in Paragraph 5
A. Why Olympians are so popular.
B. How they met superstars in the village.
C. Why the Olympic Village is mysterious.
D. How they communicated with other players.
35. What impresses Felix most in the Olympic Village
A. Spending time with some old foreign friends.
B. The positive influence of the Olympic spirit.
C. Mixing with people from around the world.
D. The competitive atmosphere in the village.

As your child progresses through life, he will make mistakes. As a parent, it's your responsibility to correct those mistakes, but you should use the right way to correct your child's mistakes or else you risk harming his self-esteem ( 自尊) or causing problems in your relationship. Using the right way to offer your child constructive criticism (建设性的批评) encourages healthy development.
Parents should be willing to teach their child proper behaviors when offering constructive criticism, according to an Everyday Health article. If your child's leaving food particles on dishes that he's washed, teach him your way of properly washing dishes, as opposed to shouting at him or thinking he's lazy. You can say, “I know you work hard at washing the dishes every night. But for the past few weeks I've noticed that there's been some food stuck on some of the dishes. I used to do this when I was about your age, too. May I show you the way I've learned to wash the dishes ”
Your child will probably not reply to your criticism if it is given in an angry tone ( 语气). Talk to your child when you're calm and clear-headed. It's difficult enough to receive criticism because no one really wants to hear about their mistakes, says psychiatrist Harry Croft, so it's important that you use a loving tone when correcting your child's mistakes. If the matter doesn't need to be dealt with immediately, give yourself as much time as you need — even go for a walk — before correcting your child's behaviors.
Comparison is never a good way of offering constructive criticism. When you compare your child with someone else, you are creating feelings of inadequacy ( 缺乏信心) in your child, which can have long-lasting bad influences. Instead, focus on your child, his behaviors, and the things he might be able to improve. Instead of saying, “I wish you could be respectful to your grandparents like your brother,” try saying, “I really want you to work on having more respect for your grandparents.”

I enjoy pushing stamped envelopes into the postbox and decorating my place with the cards可知,“我”应该是用“收到(received)”的贺卡装饰屋子。
When you're used to your WhatsApp pinging nonstop, the idea of uncapping a pen seems out of date提示此处表示“我”理解这个情况,故选understand。

52. D。由本句中的has just moved to a different city及ended up decorating his house with cards sent to the previous owners可知,这位朋友搬到了一个不同的城市,在那里他一个人也不“认识(knew)”。
