My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.
Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular ( 课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn't draw me in.
Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.
Both of my parents' workspaces were crowded ( 占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone's topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.
I grew up loving football more and more. The more I learned about my Mexican roots (根), the more I tried to find ways to express pride in them in the United States.

When you imagine a robot, you might picture R2-D2 in Star Wars, but there's a new robotic system called particle robotics that is changing what it means to be a robot.
Looking like some kids forgot to pick up their toys, the robot is a collection of plastic disks ( 圆盘). The designers refer to each disk as a “particle.” Alone, a single disk can't do much of anything. But when working as a system, they become what the designers call a “particle robot” and can do simple tasks.
Scientists behind the project were inspired by nature. In the human body, for example, individual cells ( 细胞) work together as muscle tissue. Many other types of cells also move together as a group. The robot moves in the same way.
Tiny magnets ( 磁铁) on the disks' outer rims ( 边缘) make them stick together. When one disk expands or shrinks ( 放大或缩小), it pushes or pulls on its neighbors. When all of those small pushes and pulls add up, suddenly the robot starts to move — very slowly.
Even though the disks don't communicate directly with each other, they can act as a group. The scientists showed this by fitting sensors on each disk that could recognize light. Then they programmed the disks to expand and shrink faster or slower, depending on how strong the light was. When the researchers shone a bright light, the robot slowly moved toward it — the result of all those individual expansions and shrinks.
Right now, the robot only moves across a smooth surface. It is believed that future robots, such as this one, will continue to copy nature, influencing how they might look and move. There will be more and more biologically based designs.
28. What can we learn about the new robot
A. It is similar to R2-D2.
B. It moves at a fast speed.
C. It can work in poor conditions.
D. It becomes smart when its parts team up.
29. How did scientists come up with the invention
A. They did it by chance.
B. They got the idea from nature.
C. They based it on a kind of toy.
D. They were influenced by Star Wars.
30. What does the underlined part “its neighbors” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Other disks.
B. Other robots.
C. Tiny magnets.
D. Outer rims.
31. According to the text, disks as a whole can _____.
A. move at will
B. sense danger
C. take different forms
D. act under the influence of light

Growing up in Southern California, Shelma Jun says, “I surfed, I skateboarded, I mountain biked.” In short, says Jun, “I was a tomboy ( 假小子), which is a really problematic term. Why do we need the word boy to describe being outdoorsy ”
More problematic was the way Jun came to view other women. “In those male-dominated ( 男性统治的) sports, there can be a bad energy where there's room for only one ‘cool girl’ and other women are competition,” she says. “I didn't have good relationships with women for a long time.”
Having graduated from the university, Jun got a job as a community planner and moved to New York City. There, while improving her newest skill — rock climbing — she met some women at her climbing gym who practiced in an area two hours north of the city. “That's where I got to understand what it feels like when you're trying something hard with just women,” says Jun. “When the pressure to act a certain way is taken away — because no men are around — you suddenly discover all kinds of ways to challenge and encourage one another.”
In 2014, as a “way to celebrate the climbing we were doing,” Jun started an Instagram account. With women climbers all over the country searching for others like them, Flash Foxy quickly got hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands of followers, and an online women's climbing community was born. “A lot of women felt like they were the only women climbers — not because there were so few of us, but because we were far apart,” says Jun. “Social media allowed us to discover that there are a lot of us. And we're together.”
In 2016, Jun put her community-organizing background to work to create the Women's Climbing Festival. “I could picture 30 or 40 women in the desert,” she says. “We posted it online, and 300 women said they wanted to come.” Eight festivals later, every single one of the twice-yearly gatherings has sold out — some in just one minute.
32. What problem did Jun have before moving to New York City
A. She couldn't find a favorite sport.
B. She wanted to be the only cool girl.
C. She didn't have many women friends.
D. She picked up bad habits from the men around her.
33. What change did Jun have after moving to New York City
A. She became more outdoorsy.
B. She enjoyed competition more.
C. She was relaxed while doing sports.
D. She stopped doing male-dominated sports.
34. How does Flash Foxy make women climbers feel
A. They are connected.
B. They are very safe.
C. They are far apart.
D. They are as skilled as men.
35. What can be learned about the Women's Climbing Festival
A. It is a ticketed event.
B. It is an online festival.
C. It is sending out pictures.
D. It is held every two years.

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home a few blocks away from our house to visit some of the old people who live there.
First we visit Mrs. Sokol. I call her “The Cook.” She likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook back in Russia. People would come from miles around, just to taste her famous chicken soup.
Next we visit Mr. Meyer. I call him “The Joke Man.” He tells us jokes, and laughs at his own jokes, shaking up and down and turning red in the face. Grandpa and I can't help but laugh along with him, even when the jokes aren't very funny.
Next door is Mr. Lipman. I call him “The Singer” because he loves to sing for us. Whenever he does, his beautiful voice fills the air, so clear and strong that we always sing along with him.
Then we visit Mrs. Kagan, “The Grandmother,” who shows us pictures of her grandchildren. They're all over the room, in frames (画框) and even taped to the walls.
One day Grandpa got sick and had to go to the hospital. The doctors said they didn't think he would ever get better.
Saturday came. How could I go visiting the nursing home without Grandpa Then I remembered what Grandpa once told me: “Nothing should stand in the way of doing a good deed (行为).” So I went alone. Everyone was happy to see me. They were surprised when they didn't see Grandpa. When I told them that he was sick and in the hospital, they were sad. They told me that Grandpa would have a complete recovery (康复).
The Cook went on to reveal (透露) some of her secret recipes. The Joke Man told me his latest jokes. The Singer sang a song especially for me. The Grandmother showed me more pictures. After a while, I said goodbye to everyone.
A few days later, Grandpa was still in the hospital. He was not eating, he could not sit up and he could hardly speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn't see me cry.

第二节
One possible version:
Suddenly the nurse came into the room and said, “You have some visitors.” I looked up and saw The Joke Man. Behind him were The Cook, The Singer, and The Grandmother. The Cook brought Grandpa a hot bowl of chicken soup. The Joke Man told us some new jokes, and everyone had to dry their eyes from laughing so hard. Next, The Grandmother showed Grandpa a get-well card made by her granddaughters. The Singer started singing, and we sang along with him. Before I knew it, visiting hours were up. Everyone said goodbye and told Grandpa that they would see him again soon.
That evening, Grandpa called the nurse in and said he was hungry. Soon he began to sit up. Finally he was able to get out of bed. Each day, Grandpa felt better and better, and he grew stronger and stronger. Soon he was able to go home. The doctors were shocked. They said his recovery was a medical miracle. But I knew the truth: Our friends' visit had made him well. Grandpa is better now. Every Saturday, without fail, we walk together to visit our friends.

I never will be a runner及下文中的I didn't discriminate against running可知,此处表示“跑步这项运动(或锻炼方式)”,故选exercise。
42. C。 I never will be a runner及I didn't discriminate against running, though可推断,“我”不喜欢所有的体力活动。
43. A。 44. D。 I signed up and trained for eight weeks可知,当“我”“得知(discovered)”这个活动是彩色跑时,“我”没有像往常那样不假思索地拒绝,而是认真“考虑了一下(considered)”。
I felt intimidated by my coworkers, who were experienced runners可知,“我”很不自信,担心自己会在同事面前丢脸,故选shame(使蒙受耻辱;使丢脸)。
47. B。 I not only kept up可推断,在比赛那天,“我”不仅能跟得上同事们,而且还“领先了(led)”。
48. C。“我”在比赛时的出色表现可提示此处表示“我”成为了一名“赛跑运动员(runner)”。此处与文章首句I never will be a runner对照呼应。
49. B。“我”不喜欢运动,且只参加过一次五公里的赛跑活动。结合常识可知,对于“我”来说,跑半程马拉松很有挑战性。四个选项中,只有frightening(令人害怕的)符合语境。
50. C。 Thoughts troubled me. I can't do it提示设空处所填的词应该表示“紧张的”、“焦虑的”或“恐慌的”,故选nervous。
51. A。 But I'd paid the fee for this race and thought that if I had to walk I would可推断,“我”差点都要弃赛了,故选giving up(放弃)。
52. B。 I walked with her but didn't need to可推断,跑到五英里时,“我”应该感觉还可以,great符合语境。
53. D。下文中的I walked with her提示本空选walk。
I can do things that seem impossible
