More than two thirds of the world’s polar bears will be wiped out by 2050, according to a shocking new study. By then, scientists say, global warming will have melted 42 percent of the Arctic sea ice. By 2100, only a very few of these important creatures will be left.
The report has been produced by the US Geological Survey. The scientists have publicized their findings in the hope of influencing US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
Polar bears depend on floating sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, which are their main food. Without enough ice, polar bears would be forced to go onto the land, where they are poorly skilled hunters, and would be unlikely to adapt to the life on the land in time. Experts say few little bears would survive and the stress could make many females unable to get pregnant.
The team of American and Canadian scientists spent six months studying bears, on the ground, from spotter planes and in the lab, using computer models. Some team members fear the result is even worse for the bears than what their report says. They say the Arctic is warming faster observations have showed that the ice has decreased to an all-time low.
However, not everyone in the scientific community believes that global warming is happening on such an alarming scale. Another investigation has found that polar bears are still being hunted by wealthy “sportsmen” who want their skins and heads. At least ten international companies offer bear-hunting trips.
1. What do we know about Dirk Kempthorne according to the passage
A. He is an animal scientist.
B. He is a protector of animals working for the US government.
C. He has been asked to put polar bears on the US endangered species list.
D. He has offered to put polar bears on the endangered species list.
2. Why will polar bears die out if there is not enough sea ice
A. Because polar bears can’t catch enough food without ice.
B. Because polar bears eat ice when they feel thirsty.
C. Because polar bears will be easily found by hunters without ice.
D. Because most female bears are used to giving birth under ice.
3. After a six-month study, some scientists fear that _________.
A. there is something wrong with their computers
B. polar bears will disappear even faster than they have ever expected
C. their computer models are not as accurate as they expected
D. global warming will destroy everything in the Arctic

The population of the capital Luxembourg City doubles every working day thanks to the flood of workers, and in the morning and evening rush hours, there often comes traffic block. It’s a familiar difficult problem but here they’ve come up with a novel solution.
From next year public transport will be free for everyone. The number of people taking the public transport is far from what is expected and so this idea has been brought up, which of course results in some argument.
This is what’s being built,a new tram (电车) system that will link trains in park-and-ride programs designed to make free public transport smooth and attractive. This is a big attempt by the Luxembourg government into whether people can be made to change the way they behave, because free public transport is great for existing commuters (往返上班者). But the question is whether drivers can be persuaded to change their cars and traffic jams (阻塞) for commuting on public transport.
The designer firmly believes the system is so good and effective. Everyone will want to use it. Everyone can use it, young or old, rich or poor, and everyone can say to themselves it’s better to leave the car at home. But others consider it questionable.
Taxi drivers don’t seem worried about trams stealing their trade. Businessmen who come here are never going to take public transport. They’ll take a taxi because they have meetings to get to.
So Luxembourg’s plan is really a test, and it’s one that plenty of bigger nations will be watching. As we know, the way we move around shapes our cities, our lives, our work and our environment. Luxembourg is a very small country but this could be a very big idea.
4. Why does Luxembourg City plan to make public transport free
A. To reduce traffic jams.
B. To attract more businessmen.
C. To encourage people to avoid rush hours.
D. To help its citizens travel more comfortably.
5. What can we infer about the result of the plan
A. Taxi drivers’ business will be badly affected.
B. More people will choose to drive to and from work.
C. People’s daily behavior will be completely changed.
D. Taking public transport can save money for commuters.
6. How does the designer feel about the system
A. Hopeless.
B. Concerned.
C. Confident.
D. Regretful.
7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text
A. To list the traffic problems Luxembourg faces.
B. To show how Luxembourg controls its population.
C. To give people advice on how to get around Luxembourg.
D. To introduce Luxembourg’s new public transport measure.

Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of garbage, twice the size of the state of Texas.
The organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device. The group’s founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands. When Slat was 16, he went diving in Mediterranean Sea and saw more plastic bags than fish. Since then, he has made up his mind to clean up the oceans.
He told the Associated Press that researchers with his organization have found plastic from the 1960s and 1970s among the material in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in total. Most of them float on the surface of the water, or are within a few meters of the surface.
Last Saturday, a ship pulling the pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screen (筛子) that hangs three meters down in the water. The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier. The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. Slat said this enabled the system to communicate its position at all times.
Shipping containers will hold all the plastic gathered, including bottles and fishing equipment. Slat said the containers were expected to be back on land within a year. Then the plastic will be recycled. And they will also study how the system performs in severe ocean conditions, including huge waves.
8. How did Boyan Slat react to that dive in the Mediterranean Sea
A. He showed a great interest in diving.
B. He became worried about his safety.
C. He decided to remove the garbage in oceans.
D. He became curious about underwater creatures.
9. What has the organization Ocean Cleanup found about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
A. Most of its plastic is half a century old.
B. It covers almost the size of the state of Texas.
C. Altogether there are about 1.8 billion pieces of plastic.
D. The majority of its plastic floats on or near the surface.
10. Why was a screen attached to the ship
A. To power lights in the ship.
B. To protect sea animals near it.
C.To tell the position of the ship.
D. To collect the plastic along the way.
11.What is the text mainly about
A. Approaches to removing garbage in oceans.
B. The problem of garbage in the Pacific Ocean.
C. A young man who does well in classifying garbage.
D. A huge device made to clean garbage in oceans.
D
Most scientists are now certain that global warming is taking place. Gases such as carbon dioxide are creating a warm blanket around the earth. This blanket is trapping heat in the atmosphere, and so raising the temperature of the earth.
In Europe, eight of the lust ten years have sen record high temperatures. On the other hand, the countries around the Mediterranean Sea are receiving even less rain than before. In Sub-Saharan Africa the crops are drying out in the fields and people are dying of starvation. In 1999, the southern United States was struck by a series of destructive (毁灭性的) hurricanes. Scientists expect such trends to continue, and to worsen, if global warming cannot be stopped.
In addition to worrying about rising global temperatures and extreme weather conditions, scientists are closely monitoring sea levels around the world. They are slowly rising, as the northern and southern polar ice caps start to melt. This will have serious consequences for low-lying countries near the sea. Already parts of these places are disappearing under the rising sea water.
According to a new research, one contradictory feature (特征) of global warming is that it will probably lead to a period of much colder weather. Scientists base their theory on what happened the last time the world warmed up, 8300 years ago. They have discovered that when the ice melted from the northern polar ice cap it became trapped in a lake in northern Canada. As more ice melted, this lake suddenly burst open, pouring millions of tons of freezing fresh water into the North Atlantic. This flood of water prevented the normal flow of water in the Atlantic, which takes warm water from the tropics (热带地区) north to Europe. When this flow of warm water was cut off, temperatures in Europe dropped by between three and eight degrees over the next 200 years. “That’s the concern here,” says Richard Alley, an American climate expert. “The climate hasn’t varied much in 8000 years. But big changes could come back!”
12. What is the overall effect of global warming on Europe
A. A warmer climate. B. A decline in rainfall.
C. An increase of hurricanes. D. A decrease of crop production.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The rising sea level.
B. The melting of icebergs.
C. The increase in disasters.
D. The cause of global warming.
14. How does the author describe the climate change in Europe 8300 years ago
A. By offering statistics.
B. By giving an example.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By analyzing the process.
15. What can we infer from Richard Alley’s words
A. Global climate change will bring more disasters.
B. Global warming will likely produce a colder climate.
C. Global warming will continue for the next two centuries.
D. Global climate will remain unchangeable in the next 8 000 years.

The Slow Food Movement started in Rome, Italy in 1986. When a new McDonalds was opening near a beautiful historic place, some people stood outside the restaurant and shouted, “We do not want fast food; we want slow food!”
This event wasn’t the only thing that started the Slow Food Movement. 1 But the food didn’t taste the same as he remembered. He learned that the peppers were shipped from abroad because the prices were low. This deeply concerned Carlo. Carlo wanted people to care about where their foods came from and how their foods made their culture special. So he started a group to encourage this idea. It soon became the Slow Food Movement. 2
First, what is good food Good food is fresh. The vegetables are eaten close to the place where they are grown. The fish hasn’t been sitting for days before it is eaten. Good food is seasonable. 3 Good food satisfies the senses. It should look good, smell good and taste good. And finally, good food is cultural food. Each country has special foods that make it different.

But the chemicals can also harm the natural environment around farms. 4 Clean food means food that does not harm our bodies or the environment.
And third, food should be fair. 5 All people should be able to purchase healthy food. The people who grow and make food should be paid fairly for their work. They should work in safe, healthy conditions.
A. Food should not cost too much money.
B. Its goal is to have good, clean, fair food for all people.
C. Over time, they can cause health problems in people too.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The rain was sudden and heavy on a cold night over ten years ago. Moving all the way against the heavy rain, my bus could barely stick to its normal route and was forced to stop at the station due to flash flooding.
With still two kilometers to go, time ran against me picking up my then four-year-old daughter from her childcare center. What waited for me was knee high water. I had no choice but to struggle through in the pouring rain to buy a cheap plastic coat in the shopping mall for my daughter.
After taking off my jacket and putting it into my bag to keep dry, I pulled up my skirt and took off my shoes, starting to run. Although I was wet through when arriving at the daycare center, I felt lucky to be only a few minutes late. Now I had to fix another problem.
All means of getting home appeared impossible to me. There were no buses with the clock striking 6 pm. I had no money to pay for a taxi. As the sky turned darker and darker, it seemed that we could never manage to get home.
The only thing we could do was to stand outside the childcare center staring at the rain pouring down. There was no sign of stopping. Lost in my own thoughts, I just hardly noticed another parent pull up and race inside to collect his child ten minutes later. I did not recognize him and my thoughts turned back to my current situation.

第一节 应用文写作
参考范文:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Learning some volunteers are wanted in our community to advocate garbage sorting, I am writing to apply.
My name is Li Hua, a senior three student living in the community. Having studied English for nine years, I have no difficulty communicating with others fluently in English. Besides, I know the significance of garbage sorting and have learned some basic knowledge about it. What is worth mentioning is that I’ve been taking an active part in such activities in my spare time. I believe it will be easy for me to pass on relevant information to the residents in our community.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写
参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
I was a single mother with no family in Australia and no close friends I could call. Life was already harder for me as I had to support my daughter alone. Thus it was impossible for us to take a taxi. Worried and anxious, I didn’t know how to get out of the situation. I was thinking blindly when a sweet voice awakened me. That was my daughter. Her innocent face motivated me to take a risk in the rain.
Paragraph 2:
I was about to run, when a voice asked, “How far are you going ” I turned back and saw the man I had met with at the gate of the childcare center. “Not very close,” I answered in a low voice. The man offered to give us a ride home. The two children chatted happily with each other, ignoring the rain outside. Cold and dark as it was, I felt a sense of gratitude from the bottom of my heart. It was the most unforgettable night.
