They shape our lives in many ways. Often when they get old, torn or fall apart, we’re likely to throw them out or replace them. But one 85-year-old man is devoted to bringing old books back to life.
“I know how to do this. I enjoy doing this,” said Paul Reeder, a book repair hobbyist.
“Reeder is changing the face of our textbooks, one book at a time,” said Skyview High School Principal, Deb Black. It all started just three weeks ago.
“There was an article that came out about the bad shape our books were in,” said Black.
Reeder read the article in the newspaper, and he soon appeared in Black’s office. It was the morning of April 5, 2016.
“He said, ‘I’m here to offer what I think may be a solution’,” Black recalled.
Reeder has been repairing books since the 1940s. Over the years, he’s worn many hats, yet his interest in book repair remained unchanged.
In the year 1992 when Reeder retired, he went all in. He has repaired books for a number of organizations including the Montana Historical Society and the Billings Public Library. Skyview’s students are not only thankful for Reeder’s help, but inspired by his work. “They have made him thank-you signs and cards. I have one girl who left me a note the other day. She wants to learn to do what Paul does. What he does is a lost art. He has done great things for our kids and for our books,” said Black.
The worn-out books are brought to Reeder on Friday, and in most cases, he’s able to return the books as good as new by the following Monday, according to Black.

In 1921, long before the Walt Disney Company turned Pooh (维尼熊) into an international star of TV and films, Christopher Robin Milne was given a toy bear on his first birthday from his father, A.A.Milne, who bought the stuffed animal from a store. The stuffed animal was named Edward Bear. Years later, Edward was named Winnie. From the time Christopher Robin Milne was a baby until he was about 8 years old, he would receive different stuffed animals.
A.A.Milne was a famous English author. As he watched his son interact with Winnie and friends, A.A.Milne thought his child’s interaction with the collection of animals would make a great bedtime story. So Milne worked with artist Ernest H.Shepard and wrote the first Winnie the Pooh poem, where Edward Bear was known as “Teddy Bear”. The writings appeared in Punch Magazine and in the book they wrote together, When We Were Very Young, which was published in 1924. In a four-year period, three more books that centered on the bear and his team followed: 1926’s Winnie the Pooh; 1927’s Now We Are Six; and 1928’s The House at Pooh Corner.
The books and poems about Pooh brought great success to the author, and the characters became favorites with young children and their families around the world. Their popularity led Disney to get the rights to make films about the characters in 1961. Five years later, Pooh, Tiger, Piglet and the rest of the team appeared on screen for the first time in Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. The characters later appeared in TV shows, movies, video games and short films. Pooh’s most recent appearance came last year in the popular children’s program, Doc McStuffins, where he was a special guest.

What do you think of 80s pop music Do the names George Michael, Madonna and Michael Jackson sound familiar Well, these are just some of the names that were well-known in the music scene of the 80s and early 90s. The 80s pop music scene was an important step to the popularity (普及) of present-day music. A new wave in the music scene was introduced, which made such music styles as punk rock, rap music and the MTV popular. Although it was an end to the old 60s and 70s styles, it was also the beginning of something big. The popularity of music videos meant that artists now replaced their guitar-based music with visual displays. A new wave of artists came on the scene and the entire industry developed quickly.
The most famous 80s pop music video is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Introduced in 1982, few people can forget the video not only because of its never-before-seen images, but also because of the popularity it received. Think of how 80s pop music changed the lives of people who grew up in the 80s. Ask a young man today to tell you the names of the “New Kids on the Block” and he will start talking about the neighbor kids who just moved in. These are not the answers you might have heard in the 80s. Though today’s young men do not recognize how cool 80s pop music was, most people will always remember it for what it was and these are happy memories they will always love.
Some of the 80s pop music legends include Madonna, U2, Aero Smith and of course the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Let’s not forget Prince, Tina Turner, Phil Collins and Motown’s Lionel Ritchie. Some of these musicians played music that has stood the test of time. Undoubtedly, the 80s pop music scene will live on for many more years to come.
12. What is the text mainly about
A. The characters of 80s pop music.
B. The effects of 80s pop music.
C. 80s pop music’s steps to popularity.
D. What made 80s pop music popular.
13. 80s pop music mainly includes the following styles EXCEPT ________.
A. rap music B. the MTV
C. guitar-based music D. punk rock
14. Michael Jackson’s Thriller impressed people so deeply mainly because ________.
A. it was made into a music video
B. he sang it in a special style
C. it changed the lives of people
D. it left people with happy memories
15. The purpose of the last paragraph is to tell readers that ________.
A. 80s pop music is now out of date

Apartheid forced white and non white people to live in separate areas. Non white people meant black people, people from Asia and people of mixed race. A white person and a black person could not marry. 1 Black children and white children went to different schools. Sports teams were all white or all black, never mixed.

Many white people, as well as black people, spoke out against apartheid. Mandela admired Gandhi, who had used peaceful protest in India. Perhaps peaceful protest could get rid of apartheid, without fighting. But to speak out was dangerous. 3 After a trial (审判) lasting five years, he was set free in 1961.
4
In 1960, people held a demonstration against apartheid at Sharpeville, near Johannesburg. 69 black people were shot dead by the police. The government blamed the ANC, and banned it. Then Mandela became leader of a secret army, known as “Umkhonto we Sizwe” or “ Spear of the Nation”. He was hunted by the police, and had to hide. He travelled to other countries to ask for help.
Mandela went to jail.
In 1961 South Africa left the Commonwealth. Millions of people in other countries supported the anti apartheid movement. Many nations stopped trading with South Africa. Sports teams and entertainers refused to go there. 5 In 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested again. In 1964, aged 46, he was given a life sentence.
A. What happened at Sharpeville
B. Poor people came to them for help.
C. But still the government refused to change.
D. How did people respond to Nelson Mandela
E. In 1956, Mandela and 155 other people were arrested for treason (叛国罪).

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime (一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you ” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some ... a drink of water ” The boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you ” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists could be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
