Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home, his dad never listened to
music, while one of his boarding school teachers labelled him tone deaf. But last month he
started to play the harmonica (口琴)on the streets of Bradford. People clapped, danced and
threw coins into his case for the local food bank. Horam caught himself thinking. “How, at
the age of 79, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets ”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a family gathering, Gavin, his
eldest son, said: “You know what, Dad It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our
musical abilities from you.” Horam has three sons and they cover a range of instruments. He
was surprised. “There can’t be music in me, because I can’t play! ”he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was on his way back from a trip with his
family. Gavin stopped at a music shop. He walked out and said: “Here you are. I bought this
for you, Dad. It’s a harmonica. I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a session at their local pub. Gavin played the guitar and Horam sat in the
corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would hear. After six months,
he was invited into the group. He discovered a talent for improvisation(即兴表演),responding
to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid. “I don’t play by ear. I play by heart.”
Actually, Horam says: “My harmonica plays me-how I feel, what I am, what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel “part of something much
试卷第 2 页,共 10 页
bigger” than himself. “At a time when the circle of life might be shrinking, mine is
expanding,” he says. “Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can do.”
4.Why did Horam play the harmonica on the streets of Bradford
A.To recall the good old days.
B.To beg food from passers-by.
C.To live his childhood dream.
D.To collect money for charity.
5.What is Gavin’s attitude to his father’s musical ability
A.Positive.
B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
6.What does playing the harmonica allow Horam to do
A.Enjoy the quiet.
B.Listen to his heart.
C.Express himself.
D.Sharpen his hearing.
7.What does music bring to Horam
A.A lost soul.
B.A comfortable life.
C.A broader circle of life.
D.A new perception of family.
To persist, life must reproduce. Scientists at the University of Vermont, Tufts University,
and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have
discovered an entirely new form of biological reproduction and applied their discovery to
create the first-ever, self-replicating (自我复制的) living robots.
Named Xenobots after the African clawed frog from which scientists take their stem
cells, the machines are less than 0.04 inches wide-small enough to travel inside human bodies.
They can walk and swim, survive for weeks without food, and work together in groups. They
even have regenerative capabilities; when the scientists sliced into one robot, it healed by
itself and kept moving.
试卷第 3 页,共 10 页
The Xenobots could potentially be used toward a host of tasks. Xenobots could be used
to clean up radioactive waste and collect microplastics in the oceans. Some Xenobots had
holes in their center, which could potentially be used to transport drugs or medicines.
Traditional robots “degrade (降解) over time and can produce harmful ecological and health
side effects,” researchers said in the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences. As biological machines, Xenobots are more environmentally
friendly and safer for human health. Aside from these immediate practical tasks, Xenobots
could also help researchers to learn more about cell biology — opening the doors to future
advancement in human health and longevity.
While the prospect of self-replicating biotechnology could spark concern, the researchers
said that the living machines were entirely contained in a lab and easily destroyed, as they are
biodegradable and regulated by experts. “There are many things that are possible if we take
advantage of this kind of plasticity (可塑性) and ability of cells to solve problems,” said
Joshua Bongard, one of the lead researchers at the University of Vermont.
8.Which of the following best explains “regenerative” underlined in paragraph 2
A.Fighting disease. B.Replacing old cells.
C.Self-cleaning regularly. D.Recovering and growing again.
9.What can we learn about Xenobots from paragraph 3
A.They can be widely applied to curing diseases.
B.They can serve well the research on human health.
C.They are specially designed to collect radioactive waste.
D.They are harmless to the environment by degrading plastics.
10.What is Bongar’s attitude towards the self-replicating biotechnology
A.Positive. B.Doubtful.
C.Indifferent. D.Ambiguous.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.An experiment on African clawed frogs.
B.The trend of developing biotechnology.
C.An application of a machine in medicine.
D.The invention of the first self-reproduction robots.
Earth is far more alive than we previously thought, according to “deep life” studies that
试卷第 4 页,共 10 页
reveal a rich ecosystem beneath our feet that is almost twice the size of all the world's oceans.
Regardless of extreme heat, no light and intense pressure, scientists estimate if has between
15 billion and 23 billion tonnes of microorganisms. “It's like finding a whole new reservior of
life on Earth,” said Karen Lloyd, an associate professor at the University of Tennessee.
Results suggest 70 percent of Earth's bacteria and archaea exist in the subsurface. One
organism found 2. 5 kilometers below the surface has been buried for millions of years and
may not rely on all energy from the sun. Also, the methanogen (产甲烷菌) has found a way
to create methane in this environment, which it may not use to reproduce or divide, but use to
replace or repair broken parts. Lengths of their lives were completely different. Some
microorganisms have been alive for thousands of years, barely moving except with shifts in
earthquakes or eruptions. They're just active inside, with less energy than people thought
possible to support life.
The team consists of 1, 200 scientists from 52 countries in disciplines ranging from
geology and microbiology to chemistry and physics. The scientists say they will present their
findings before the American Geophysical Union’s annual meeting opens this week, which
are made possible by technical advances on drills and microscopes.
The scientists have been wondering about the point beyond which life can't exist, but the
deeper they dig, the more life they find. There is a temperature maximum - currently 122 ℃ -
but they believe this record will be broken if they keep exploring and developing mor
advanced instruments.
Questions remain, including how the microbes interact with chemical processes, and
what this might reveal about how life and Earth coevolved.
12.What do the scientists find about the underground microorganisms
A.They can’t reproduce and divide. B.They’re the oldest living things.
C.Some of them consume no energy. D.Some of them almost always keep still.
13.What can we learn about the reseach from paragraph 3
A.It lasts for aound one year. B.It is conducted in 52 countries.
C.It involves efforts from multiple fields. D.It promotes technical development.
14.Why do the scientists drill deep
A.To find the depth limit of life. B.To break their previous record.
C.To discover more ancient microorganisms. D.To detect the highest subsurface
temperature.
试卷第 5 页,共 10 页
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Earth’s Depths Are Full of Life B.Organisms Live Better Underground
C.Earth Is Far Beyond Human Exploration D.Subsurface Life Differs from That on
Land
