Archaeologists in Italy are learning more and more about the everyday life of the people who lived in Pompeii nearly 2,000 years ago. Pompeii is an ancient city world-known for being suddenly buried in the year 79 by the nearby volcano, with over 1,100 people killed almost instantly by the extreme heat.
People began unearthing Pompeii in the mid-1700s. Over the years, scientists have discovered more and more about the life of these people who were sadly frozen in time. Archaeologists have discovered theatres, swimming pools, gyms, hospitals, and many different kinds of stores. In 2019, Italian archaeologists announced they were working to unearth a snack bar, or a thermopolium. As the bar was in such a great shape, they were determined to unearth the whole area.
A thermopolium has a long, low counter with many clay pots built into it to hold the food and drinks. What was special about this one was that even the pictures on counter walls were in almost perfect condition, almost exactly the way people would have seen them years ago. Some of the paintings on the wall show ducks and roosters — examples of food served at the snack bar.
The archaeologists discovered in the counter many large clay jars holding food and drinks, and two jars holding fish and pork. They also found a mixture of snails, fish, and sheep, which they believe may have been some sort of soup. Additionally, they found the skeleton (骨架) of a small dog, as well as the bones of at least two people, one of whom was about fifty, and appeared to have been asleep when killed by the volcano.
The archaeologists say they're really only just beginning to understand all that they can learn from this snack bar. Because the site was so complete, they expect it to demonstrate many more of the hidden secrets of Pompeii.
1. What can be found in the thermopolium
A. Silver pots. B. Swimming pools. C. Wall paintings. D. Teenage bones.
2. What might the underline word “demonstrate” in paragraph 5 means

3. Which might be the best title of the text
A. A Snack Bar Found in Pompeii B. Pompeii Came Back to Life
C. Archeologists Made Every Effort D. All Froze in a Nearby Volcano

Writing across Time
When students today need to take notes, they simply reach for their ballpoint pens. For students in the past, writing instruments were not so convenient.
Quill pens
Quill pens were made from large bird feathers. Students sharpened the quills with knives and then dipped them into pots of ink to write. The points needed constant re-sharpening and each dip of the quill provided only enough ink to write one word. Besides these problems, drops of ink often stained the page. Yet, people used quill pens for more than a thousand years. Can you imagine writing with a quill pen
Brush pens
Chinese students traditionally used brush pens to practice writing characters. Unlike quill pens, brush pens had soft bristles that made smooth lines. Students dipped their brush pens in a pool of ink on an inkstone and then wrote.
Chalk
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, when paper was not easily available, chalk was widely used in classrooms. Teachers wrote with chalk on blackboards while students practiced writing and maths on their own slates (石板).
Fountain pens
Fountain pens were the first pens that stored ink inside, from where it flowed through the metal tip or nib (笔尖) for writing. In the 19th century, they finally replaced quills on school desks. However, even with fountain pens, ink still often spilt out, leaving stains everywhere.
Ballpoint pens
Early ballpoint pens leaked and wrote poorly. Three inventors took almost sixty years to finally solve these problems in the early 1950s. Today two of them, Hungarian journalist Josef Laszlo Biro and French Baron Bich, are known for making the ballpoint pen cheap and reliable. Biro and Bic pens are still hugely popular and useful today.

A fresh and gentle wind on your face, soft sand under your feet and blue waters as far as the eye can see. Is there any other Olympic sport that is played in such pleasant conditions as beach volleyball?
“I’ve gone to a lot of beautiful places, and met a lot of beautiful people. That wouldn’t have happened if I had been playing another sport.” said Randy Stoklos, America’s most famous beach volleyball player.
The sport began as a four-a-side game on beaches in Southern California in the 1920s. The first recorded two-man game took place there in 1930, and the first tournament (锦标赛) was held in Los Angeles 18 years later. The winners were awarded a case of Pepsi. In the 1950s, women started playing and the sport soon spread to Europe and South America. Yet at that time, beach volleyball was more an entertainment show than a sport, with beauty contests included. The Association of Volleyball Professionals was founded in 1983 and beach volleyball developed into a fast, athletic sport. Its world-wide popularity won beach volleyball a place at the 1996 Olympics in Atalanta, where 24 male teams and 16 female teams took part. At present, the US and Brazil are the best in the world at beach volleyball.
The game came to China in the early 1990s and there have been national tournaments since 1994. It became an official event at the Eighth National Games in 1997. China’s You Wenhui and Wang Lu finished ninth in the women’s beach volleyball world championships in Brazil.

A. the history of beach volleyball B. how to play beach volleyball
C. the importance of beach volleyball D. women’s beach volleyball in China

B. Beach volleyball has always been an entertainment show rather than a sport.
C. Beach volleyball began on beaches in Souther California.
D. Women started playing beach volleyball in South America in 1945.
3. When did beach volleyball officially become an Olympic event?
A. In 1948, B. In 1996. C. In 1950. D. In 1997.

A. in 1996, beach volleyball became an official event in China
B. China’s beach volleyball team is the best in the world
C. China’s beach volleyball players won the first place in Brazil

For generations, people have enjoyed the simple joy of flying a kite. However, kites were not always the toys we think of today.
Kites actually started as instruments of war. The first known kites were flown in China around 3,000 years ago and were used by the Chinese military to send signals, spy on (侦察) enemies, and deliver urgent messages. Kites were also used to measure long distances. One general flew a kite above a town to measure how far his army would have to tunnel underground to go secretly under the city walls. With this information, his army were able to surprise their enemy.
The first kites were practical, not necessarily pretty. But during the Tang Dynasty, people started using lighter materials to make kites. A new focus was put on kites' appearance. By the 1300s, making kites had appeared as an art form, and kites were decorated with colorful pictures. They were flown for enjoyment and celebration of the Chinese New Year. As the years went on, kites became more complicated. Some artists added whistles so the kites could make sounds as they danced among the clouds.
Over time, the tradition of kite flying spread worldwide. It grew in popularity across Southeast Asia North Africa first. When explore Marco Polo returned to Italy, he brought back many stories about kites. These stories and the growing influence of Asian culture helped popularize kites across Europe. From there, knowledge of kites crossed the Atlantic with travelers heading to America.
Since then, kites have become more than just pieces of flying art. They have played a meaningful role in discoveries. Perhaps the best-known use of a kite was in an experiment described by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, which eventually led Franklin to invent the lightning rod (避雷针). Another important use of kites was by the Wright brothers in the early 1900s, which helped them create the world's first successful airplane.
For hundreds of years, kites have played a significant role in human exploration and artistic expression. Even now, kites are still an important part of cultural celebrations. Despite their changing appearance and uses through the ages, kites hold a valued place in human history.
1. Why was the general mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To explain how kites were used in war.
B. To illustrate the types of kites in war.
C. To prove the wisdom of ancient Chinese people.
D. To show how ancient Chinese people dealt with the enemy.
2. What can we say about kites during the Tang Dynasty
A. They were more practical. B. They became lightweight.
C. They became popular around Europe. D. They were used to predict the weather.
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Entertaining with kites. B. Experimenting with kites.
C. Kite-flying adventure. D. Best-known kites in history.
4. How is the text mainly developed
A. By giving examples. B. By describing a process.

Mo was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day. Physics was first and she hated physics, it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything!
“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today!” said Nima as she arrived. Terry looked back again. “What’s wrong with her ” said Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she looks absent-minded and acts strangely these days. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts!” said Mo angrily while going into the exam room.
Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”
Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam, but Terry didn’t take her phone out. Mo was feeling bad again. Why did she tell Mr Reed But it was too late now. He wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone in the exam. She was on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. 第二节
答案:
Para 1:
Terry was looking at her phone and didn’t hear him as he walked silently up to her table. Though feeling uneasy and restless, she looked at Mr. Reed and nodded. With her eyes glued to the phone, it wasn't until the teacher patted on her back that Terry noticed Mr. Reed. Immediately, Terry was asked to leave. Terry rushed out of the class, crying all the way. Instead of feeling relaxed, Mo had ants in her pants. She felt guilty for telling Mr. Reed about it, which had resulted in Terry's not finishing her exam.
Para 2:
Mo was leaving school when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Terry. It was Terry who had just come out of the teacher's office. Feeling embarrassed, Mo wanted to run away. Nevertheless, Terry stopped her and said, "Mo, I'm sorry I haven't kept my promise to help you review, but my father has been badly ill for two weeks. Today he had a significant operation. I was so worried about him that I kept on reading the texts on the phone sent by my mother to get the latest news about him, so Mr. Reed forgave me. Can you forgive me " "Of course! Let's go to the hospital to see your father." Mo couldn't wait to reply.
