EXERCISE IN EXACTLY 4 MINUTES PER DAY!

TIME IS IT. Over 92% of people who own exercise equipment and 88% of people who own health club memberships do not exercise. A 4-minute complete workout is no longer hard to believe for all the people who have bought our excellent Range of Motion machine (ROM)since 1990.Over 97% of people who rent our ROM for 30 days end up buying it, due to the health benefits experienced during that tryout and the ROM performance score that tells the story of health and fitness improvement. I am an active playgoer and play-reader, and perhaps my best reason for editing this book is a hope of sharing my enthusiasm for the theater with others. To do this I have searched through dozens of plays to find the ones that I think best show the power and purpose of the short play.
Each play has a theme or central idea which the playwright(剧作家) hopes to get across through dialogue and action. A few characters are used to create a single impression growing out of the theme. It is not my intention to point out the central theme of each of the plays in this collection, for that would, indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing, and thinking about the plays and the effectiveness of the playwright. However, a variety of types is represented here. These include comedy, satire, poignant drama, historical and regional drama. To show the versatility(多面性) of the short play, I have included a guidance play, a radio play and a television play.
Among the writers of the plays in this collection, Paul Green, Susan Glaspell, Maxwell Anderson, Thornton Wilder, William Saroyan, and Tennessee Williams have all received Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the theater. More information about the playwrights will be found at the end of this book.
To get the most out of reading these plays, try to picture the play on stage, with you, the reader, in the audience. The houselights dim(变暗). The curtains are about to open, and in a few minutes the action and dialogue will tell you the story.
4. What do we know about the author from the first paragraph
A. He has written dozens of plays. B. He has a deep love for the theater.
C. He is a professional stage actor. D. He likes reading short plays to others.
5. What does the author avoid doing in his work
A. Stating the plays’ central ideas. B. Selecting works by famous playwrights.
C. Including various types of plays. D. Offering information on the playwrights.
6. What does the author suggest readers do while reading the plays
A. Control their feelings. B. Apply their acting skills.
C. Use their imagination. D. Keep their audience in mind.
7. What is this text
A. A short story. B. An introduction to a book.
C. A play review. D. An advertisement for a theater.

Recently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and ambitious and I enjoyed our conversation. Still I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.
In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their HIB working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants, and only 30 percent of them were lucky, less than half of the rate in 2013.
And it can only become worse. US President Donald Trump’s immigration (移民) policies in this country are tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.
Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.
This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them leverage when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.
8. The author felt upset because ________ .
A. he was not interested in the talk B. he didn’t fulfill his career dreams
C. he couldn’t provide helpful advice D. he thought the student was useless
9. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage
A. The lottery system for HIB working visa is too tough.
B. Chinese students have no choice but to return to China.
C. President Obama is tightening up the immigration policies.
D. Fewer and fewer students are applying for the working visa.
10. What does the word “leverage” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Advantage. B. Language. C. Ability. D. Education.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the tightening of immigration policy
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Worried.
D
British shoppers buy 2.15million tonnes of clothing and shoes annually, yet UK citizens have an estimated£30 billion worth of unused clothing gathering dust at the back of the wardrobe(衣柜). But new technology could see the end of that, with the clothes themselves giving owners a gentle reminder of their existence.
“Smart clothes” could help us clear out our wardrobes by sending messages or tweeting us if they haven’t been worn for a good while. If these alerts are ignored, the clothes will get in touch with a clothing charity and ask to be reused, with an organization automatically sending out donation information. They could also be programmed to put themselves up for auction(拍卖) on eBay.
Academics at Birmingham City University are developing the “connected wardrobe” to encourage more suitable clothes consumption. The concept sees clothes tagged (给……加标签) using washable contactless technology.
Mark Brill, senior lecturer at Birmingham City University, said, “Think of the surprise when an owner suddenly receives bids for items that they didn’t know were in their wardrobe.” “The connected wardrobe is a practical, pleasant concept to encourage people to think about their clothing consumption(消费).Finally, I hope it will encourage more appropriate fashion consumption,” he added. “Perhaps we can even move away from the idea of ‘ownership’ of clothing. When we’ve worn them enough, the items will pass themselves on to their next keeper. ”
It follows in the footsteps of the “Internet of Things” — a concept that sees ordinary household items connecting to the Internet in order to share information. From adjusting your alarm clock to monitoring the temperature of your home, the Internet is changing the way we live. Now, the “Internet of Clothes” will see that neglected clothes will tweet and text the owners “asking” to be worn depending on the weather and frequency of wear. Clothes will keep track of other information such as who owned them previously, as well as how much they originally cost, who made them and how much the worker was paid for them.
12. What does the author say about “smart clothes”
A. They may be donated on eBay. B. They have gained in popularity.
C. They give warnings if worn out. D. They may be recycled if long forgotten.
13. How does Mark Brill find the “connected wardrobe”
A. It helps people buy cheaper clothes. B. It contributes to right consumption attitudes.
C. It changes people’s shopping habits. D. It improves people’s consumer confidence.
14. What is indicated in the last paragraph
A. Clothes can be a source of information. B. Weather affects the connected wardrobe.
C. Clothes are sold online at a low price. D. The Internet is a platform to share items.
15. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Smart clothes: A change of wardrobe
B. Smart clothes : A replacement of traditional clothes.
C. Smart clothes: A reminder of weather.
D. Smart clothes : A recorder of life.

D. Smart clothes : A recorder of life.

It has the richest tourist resources with numerous historical sites and modern complexes. The second destination is Chengdu, a southwestern pearl, home to the cute giant pandas. It has ranked among the most livable cities in China for years, owing to its pleasant environment and leisure lifestyle.
There are various transportation and accommodation services available in both cities so you’d better check online and find the ones that suit you best.
Looking forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Li Hua
