When Owen Vaccaro, star of The House with a Clock in Its Walls, thinks about the start of his acting career (事业), he thinks about his first-grade teacher and his dislike of sports and other activities that many children enjoy.
“She knew we had tried every single sport and activity for me,” the 13-year-old actor said about his teacher. “Nothing really worked. So she said we should try out a theater company called MZ Stageworks. I went into it with really low hopes. I didn’t think I was going to like it any more than I had liked anything else.”
Now an eighth-grader, Owen still remembers the excitement of discovering those early theater classes in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. “I loved it and couldn’t wait until the next class.”
Soon, the theater classes led to his first auditions (试镜), which finally landed him his first film part, A Product of Me, six years ago. In the years since, Owen has been in eight more movies.
In The House with a Clock in Its Walls, an adaptation (改编) of a 1973 children’ s book by John Bellairs, Owen plays Lewis Barnavelt, the lead character. After losing his parents, Lewis is sent to live with his uncle Jonathan (Jack Black). Lewis quickly discovers that Jonathan and his best friend and neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), actually have magic powers, and there’s something strange going on in Lewis s new house.
“It’s a film about amazing powers and family and fighting evil (邪恶) with the people you love,”' Owen said. “It is a starter horror (恐怖) movie for teens and older.”
Working with Black and Blanchett, who are both parents, “was marvelous,” Owen said. He even got to know their families. “I love them. Cate brought her kids to set. One of them, Iggy, and I would play games together,” he said. “And as for Jack, I went to Six Flags with his kids, and it was a ton of fun.”
1. What does Owen think of his first-grade teacher
A. She is a person of wide interest. B. She is a good actress.
C. She is helpful. D. She is creative.

“In time, we will put our eyes to this light and see that these people are the peers of nature. And forgivingly, when they appear we will lift up our song and sing, and say we cannot praise too much of any single thing.” It may read like poetry, but these lines weren’t composed by a poet — they were written by an artificial intelligence (AI).
It appeared in early December on the face of the UK Pavilion (展馆) at Expo 2020 in Dubai, and it was created from a single word chosen by a visitor to the pavilion, which was then fed to an AI that had previously been trained with millions of lines of poetry. The result forms part of a “Collective Message” — a continuous poetry shown on the bar screens arranged in a circle at one end of the cone-shaped (锥形) pavilion, which was designed by Es Devlin, a British artist whose previous works includes stage sets for the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony. She is the first female designer of a UK pavilion since the Expo started in 1851.
Devlin’s inspiration to create Collective Message came from famed scientist Stephen Hawking. In 2015, three years before his death, he approved a competition in which people were invited to submit a potential message for an advanced alien civilization, with the goal of meaningfully representing mankind and our planet.
In a similar way, visitors to the pavilion are encouraged to send a message to the AI and acknowledge the role that AI plays in our lives. “We don’t want this thing just to be like a museum with lots of different exhibits, and we really want something that visitors could engage with,” says Stuart Bradbury of creative agency Avantgarde, “The AI was created specifically for this project, many AI experts and social organizations, including the Poetry Archive, the Poetry Society and the Scottish Poetry Library, worked with developers to train and improve AI output over six months, and we think we’ve created something really special.”
1. Who is the designer of the Collective Message
A. Stephen Hawking. B. Stuart Bradbury. C. Es Devlin. D. Poetry Archive.
2. Why is Stephen Hawking mentioned in the third paragraph
A. To introduce the theme of the Expo 2020.
B. To popularize the world-famous scientist.
C. To state the source of inspiration for this project.

When Paul Greenberg’s son turned 12, he was asking for a smartphone of his own. He challenged Greenberg’s reasons for why it wasn’t a good idea, pointing out his dad’s own addiction to his phone. That’s when Greenberg decided to replace his smartphone with an old-fashioned flip phone and focus on spending time with his son.
Greenberg ended up writing a delightful book about the transition, called “Goodbye Phone, Hello World: 60 Ways to Disconnect from Tech and Reconnect to Joy”—but it’s different from what you might expect. It’s not an essay on the evils(罪恶)of technology, but a brief, and practical guide on how to live without a smart phone.
The book is divided into chapters that explore the various aspects of your life that will improve when you reallocate your time, such as finding a sense of purpose, strengthening mind and body, building better relationships with friends, family, and lovers, and healing the environment. But first, it opens with a message that our screen addiction is not so much a result of weakness, but rather a carefully invented plan by many computer scientists far more knowledgeable than we are about our own brains and nature.
“I wanted to tell my son that people aren’t addicted to screens because they’re lazy, but instead because billions of dollars have been invested to make this outcome unavoidable. When you look into your phone, you think it’s just your two eyes looking at a screen. What’s really happening is that 10, 000 programmers’ eyes are looking back at you, following you, tailoring your environment so that you’ll keep looking.”
“However, you can quit, refuse to play the game; and when you do, doors of opportunity open all around.”
This book is a pleasure to read. Its briefness is purposely suited to people who have lost their attention span(持续时间), but wish to regain it. I know that when my kids get home from school later today, they won’t see me on my phone. I’ll leave it inside and take them out to play Frisbee.
1. What does the underlined word “transition” (in Paragraph 2) refer to
A. Say yes to flip phone, Say no to Smartphone.
B. Stop phone addiction, Set an example to children.
C. “Goodbye Phone, Hello World”-a delightful book.
D. Less time with smartphone, More time with children.
2. Which of the following topics is not covered in the book
A. interpersonal relationships B. environmental protection
C. social evils of technology D. physical and mental health
3. Which of the following statements about screen addiction might Greenberg agree with
A. Screen addiction is the direct result of people’s weakness.
B. Screen addiction is a trick created by computer scientists.
C. Screen addiction is a sign of people’s physical laziness.
D. Screen addiction is unavoidable and a waste of money.
4. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To recommend a delightful book to readers.
B. To persuade people to put down smartphones.
C. To explore the reasons behind screen addiction.
D. To suggest ways to reconnected to a joyful life.

Chris looked at the clock again. Only five more minutes before school let out.
Just now, his Creative Learning teacher, Mrs.Griswell asked them to be prepared to share their favorite hobby with the class on Friday. And they were supposed to bring samples for show.
Chris sighed. No way am I going to talk about my favorite hobby, he thought. His older brother, Wes, laughed at him about it enough—and his dad didn't think much of it, either.
On the bus, Chris heard others talking about the "hobby thing". Brian said he was going to bring his bowling trophies(保龄球奖杯). Chris turned back around in his seat so he wouldn't have to talk to him anymore.
"Don't believe him," Nick whispered. "He's the worst bowler I've ever seen. He borrows the trophies from his dad, I guess. He's rally fake."
At home, Chis pulled out his boxes of baseball cards. He liked baseball, even played some. But his real hobby let him express things from his imagination, and that's what he liked most. Sorting through his cards, Chris began choosing some of the best ones. Yet he didn't feel right about what he had decide.
Tuesday passed. Chris gathered his baseball supplies and put them in a grocery bag marked "My Favorite Hobby". He was ready for Friday, but something still felt wrong. He walked out of his room, ignoring the sketchpad(草图本) on his desk.
Wednesday. After school Chris sat at the kitchen table with a sandwich, but he wasn't hungry. He didn't want to be fake like Brian, but he wasn't sure he had the courage to tell everyone his real hobby. What would the guys think of him
He chewed his sandwich slowly, thinking of Grandma. She was the reason he'd gotten interested in his hobby in the first place. "You have talent," Grandma had told him proudly, admiring his work. And that felt really good.
Suddenly, Chris knew what he had to do. He dropped his sandwich on the plate and rushed to the phone. "Hi, Grandma, it's Chris. I need your help."
