Phil Wise’s heart raced as he opened one of the transport tubes. He and a team of scientists stepped back as a young Tasmanian devil (袋獾) named Oddity came out. Oddity took a cautious look around and then ran into the forest on Maria Island.
Wise is a wildlife biologist from the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program. The scientists working with this program study Tasmanian devils, monitor their health, and track the devils found in the wild. Because a rare disease is reducing the number of devils, Oddity and 14 others were raised on a preserve and then brought to Maria Island to be released into the wild.
Though they are raised in zoos all over the world, devils live wild only in Tasmania. They are important to the ecosystem because they eat dead animals they find, which helps clean up the environment. But a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is killing devils on mainland Tasmania, endangering the species. The goal of the scientists who released Oddity and the others was to create a population of disease-free Tasmanian devils on Maria Island. Oddity is a part of this “insurance population” of devils raised in zoos and wildlife preserves.
The scientists chose Maria Island for the release because there is no DFTD there. It is separated from mainland Tasmania by the ocean. Devils from the rest of Tasmania can’t get there, which prevents the facial disease from spreading.
Wise and his fellow scientists monitored Oddity and the 14 other Tasmanian devils. The animals did so well that 13 more devils were released. The 28 original Tasmanian devils have reproduced; there are now around 80 devils. Scientists are now figuring out their next move. According to Wise, the focus will soon shift to moving some of the healthy devils back to mainland Tasmania.
Wise says he is “excited to know that animals are getting a chance to be free in the wild in an area that is free of DFTD. It is the ultimate aim of all who work to conserve threatened species.”
1. Why did Wise and his team release the Tasmanian devils
A. To prevent DFTD killing them out. B. To find out a treatment for DFTD.
C. To control the DFTD spread in zoos. D. To protect Maria Island from DFTD.
2. What probably made Maria Island chosen for the release
A. Its wildlife diversity. B. Its geographic location.
C. Its natural resources. D. Its improved ecosystem.
3. How was the released Tasmanian devils’ life
A. Their safety was uncertain. B. Their number was going up.
C. They hardly enjoyed freedom. D. They recovered from DFTD.
4. What does Wise think of the program
A. Fruitless. B. Risky. C. Successful. D. Demanding.

Saving lives has always been an important mission (使命) of science. Now science, and indeed all society, are facing a new dilemma: whether or not to try and save more lives through human cloning.
The first cloning experiments in the 1950s involved frogs and toads. It was not until 1997 that scientists successfully cloned the first mammal, the now world-famous sheep known as Dolly. Cloning techniques’ have continued to improve since then, and today there are cloned mice, salmon, and cattle.
Some scientists want to apply the methods used in cloning animals to produce skin, or organs, and other body parts for humans. One of these methods involves taking adult cells from the brain or blood and growing them into new tissues. Another more complex technique takes embryo (胚胎) cells and develops them into a wide variety of cell types and tissues. It is this planned use of human embryos that has resulted in controversy (争议) and criticism.
The cloning of human cells provides the potential to find cures and eliminate diseases. The dream of some researchers is to create a Utopian world of good health. Others question whether it is right to “Play God” in an attempt to cure the disabilities and diseases in this world.
Some of the great hopes for cloning include the utility to perform transplants, whenever they are needed, using cloned organs. For example, people with lung cancer may simply have their lungs replaced with healthy ones. Scientists also look forward to the day when people in wheelchairs can walk again, and illnesses such as Alzheinmier’s and Parkinson’s Disease can be prevented.
However, a lot of people worry about the appearance of masses of identical people, and the production of “perfect” humans for warfare or slave labor. We might even see headless human bodies being stored at hospitals for their “spare parts”. With such thought-causing possibilities for the 2lst century, human cloning will no doubt continue to receive widespread attention and scrutiny (审视).
1. What problem is science faced with
A. Whether human cloning can help save more lives.
B. How to carry out human cloning scientifically.
C. Whether human cloning should be used for saving lives.
D. How to save more lives through human cloning.
2. What can we know about cloning according to the text
A. It has a history of over half a century.
B. I develops very quickly in the 21st century.
C. It can protect people from diseases of any kind.
D. It has enabled many people in wheelchairs to walk again.
3. The underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 4 most probably means “_______”.
A. put up with B. get along with C. make up for D. get rid of
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Human body parts will be stored at hospitals for use.
B. Hunan cloning may become a trend in the 21st century.
C. Many people learn the effects of human cloning on our society.
D. People think humans will surely be cloned for slave labor.

When Swiss watch boss, Christoph Grainger-Herr, was unable to fly to a global trade show because of Covid-19 restrictions, he decided to join the show as a life-size, 3D hologram(全息投影). Appearing in 4K resolution, he was able to talk to, and see and hear the people who were physically attending the event.
With the coronavirus pandemic having put a stop to much global travel since March 2020,there is a growing interest in the use of holograms—3D light projections(投影) of a person—as amore life-like, more immersive, more sensory alternative to video calls.
Los Angeles-based Portl is one of the firms at the forefront of the technology. Its portals(投影设备) are eight feet (2.5m) tall, glass-fronted, computerised boxes. Inside the booths a life-size hologram of a person appears. The portals have built-in speakers, so that the hologram’s “voice” can be heard. They also include cameras and microphones so that the user of the hologram can see and hear the people in front of his, or her projection. “And were it not for the sheet of glass in front of the hologram, you’d think the person was actually there. In fact, if there is no light on the glass so that you cannot see it reflecting, then you do think the person is actually there.” says Mr Nussbaum, the boss of US holograms firm Portl.
The portals cost about $60,000 each, so they are certainly expensive, although the company says they can be rented for considerably less. “In a few years’ time, this is going to become a regular way of communicating between offices,” says Mr Nussbaum.
Yet, he cautions that problems may occur in the future if these holographic images become so real that distinguishing them from an actual person will become impossible. “If you can create digital experiences that get closer and closer to how you sense reality, you’re more likely to be manipulated(操控),” says Mr Nussbaum.
Mr Nussbaum says he is confident that hologram technology is going to replace standard video screens in video conferencing in five years. He also predicts that it will see off video information screens. “This will be the new way that businesses will want to present their content whether live or recorded.”
1. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To give an example. B. To present an argument.
C. To lead to the main topic. D. To attract readers’ attention.
2. What can we learn about the portals
A. They are life-size glass boxes. B. They have a built-in computer.
C. They reduce light reflection on the glass. D. They consist of audio and video equipment.
3. What can we expect of the hologram technology in the future
A. It will record live conference automatically.
B. It is helpful in telling an actual person from a digital one.
C. It will possibly take the place of conventional screens.
D. It is not likely to popularise due to high cost of the portals.
4. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain the function of hologram technology.
B. To compare video calls with hologram technology.
C. To introduce hologram technology as a communication means.
D. To show the importance of hologram technology in communication.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My granddaughter Elizabeth lives in Washington. When she was 12-year-old, she spent the summer visiting her father near Atlanta, Georgia. Elizabeth's school was to start in about three weeks, so it was decided that she could stop and visit Texas with us before returning to Washington just in time to start school.
Our visit would be rather short, and we would enjoy every moment that we could to share with her.
I couldn't imagine what the travel agent in Georgia was thinking when it scheduled 12-year-old Lizzy's flights. First, she was to fly from Atlanta to Houston William Hobby Airport, arriving about 9:00 p. m. Then she was to depart for San Antonio about 11:00 p. m. from Houston's George H.W. Bush Inter-Continental Airport. However, Bush is 25 miles across town from Houston Hobby Airport, and there was no ground transportation available between the two.
The lady who sat next to Liz on the plane learned of the situation. Sensing Liz's worry, she gave her a phone card and $10.00. When Elizabeth called us and explained her situation, we advised her to contact a police officer there at the terminal(航空终点站).
She did. The police officer put her in touch with Ms Joy Fears, a Continental gate agent. Initially, Ms Fears was going to put Elizabeth in a taxi to make the cross-town trip. Liz had $20. 00 that her dad had given her upon leaving Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, plus the $10.00 that her seat-mate had given her-enough for the taxi fare to Bush Airport. However, considering Liz's age and the late hour, Ms Fears decided to show her kindness by taking an enjoyable "do it yourself" approach.
First Ms Fears got a meal voucher(代金券) and got Lizzy fed. Then she put both Liz's luggage and our granddaughter in her private vehicle. She went so far as to personally deliver Liz to the Continental gate at Bush, and saw to it that she was properly checked in and on her way for the 55-minute flight from Houston to San Antonio.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We feel very grateful to Liz's seat-mate and the Houston police officer. __________________

A Rare Animal in China
The most famous rare animal in China is the national treasure, the giant panda, which used to nearly die out. Happily, our government has taken timely measures to save it. We have set up giant panda research centers as well as reserves.
Giant pandas' bodies are black and white, moving heavily and slowly. They feed on bamboo. They look lovely and we like them very much.
There is a giant panda research center in Sichuan Province. A nature reserve has also been set up to ensure their safety in the wild. Giant pandas are also sent to many countries as ambassadors of friendship. May the lovely animals be with us forever.
第二节
答案:
We feel very grateful to Liz's seat-mate and the Houston police officer. I especially want to show my appreciation to Joy Fears for seeing that our lovely Elizabeth got to us unharmed. I sent my thanks to Ms Fears, and my daughter contacted Continental Airlines with an "Atta-Girl" for her. My daughter also gave the Houston Police Department an "Atta-Boy" for the officer who assisted Liz that night.
There are many helpful folks who don't get recognition for their kindness. Doing good deeds for other people lets them know that they are important, and the assistance them provide helps people get through their lives in a more enjoyable way. In our family, if each person gets to cultivate his or her strengths, we can work together for the greater benefit of the family. So I would like the world to hear about the generous actions of Ms Joy Fears.
