Last summer my husband and I got into watching America's Got Talent. One of our favourite performers (表演者) was Samuel Comroe, an actor with Tourette Syndrome (妥瑞氏症). He is brave enough to face his disorder (疾病).
Like Samuel Comroe, writer Ellie Terry has the disorder too. Her novel Forget Me Not tells a story of Calliope June, a middle school girl who also has Tourette Syndrome. Calliope sometimes makes faces or strange noises. She can't control (克制) herself. The doctor advises her to hide her disorder, but that only makes things worse. Her classmates begin to make fun of her. It's hard for her to start a friendship.
Calliope and her mother move a lot. After their latest move, Calliope makes a friend in the new neighbourhood (社区). His name is Jinsong. Outside school, he can accept Calliope's differences. He thinks she's an interesting person. In school, however, things are different. Jinsong is the school's student president (主席) and also the most popular boy in class. It seems that he has to choose between being popular and staying friends with Calliope. As he grows, he learns that he can have both things. As for Calliope, she learns to accept and be open about her disorder and starts to make more friends finally.

There was once a very wide tree in South Africa. 60 people could stay inside its hollow trunk (空心树干). The tree reached over 18 metres into the sky and it was more than 1,100 years old. But now, that tree and others like it have died. Scientists want to know why.
The tree was a baobab (猴面包树). Baobab trees grow in Africa and are called “the Tree of Life”. Baobab trees usually live a long time. One of the oldest stood for more than 2,400 years.
In 2005, scientists began a research to find out the age of more than 60 baobabs. They noticed that nine of the thirteen oldest baobab trees and five of the six largest died in the following 12 years.
Stephan Woodborne, one of the six scientists, says more research is needed to know why the trees died. However, they think climate (气候) change may be the main reason. That's because the trees clearly weren't sick. And many were in national parks, so they were protected from human activities. They believe that increasing temperatures and changing rainy seasons have made it harder for baobabs to live.
People should be more environment-friendly. It is one way to help protect baobabs and other trees from the effects (影响) of climate change. That could mean using less energy (能源) and making less waste, when possible.
“We need to think about the way we live our lives,” Woodborne says. “If we all change what we do a little bit, it will start to make a difference.”
71. The 1,100-year-old baobab tree's hollow trunk was wide enough for _______________ to stay inside.
72. Baobab trees are known as “The Tree of Life” in _______________.
