For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape(塑造) his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to begin stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient (方便), it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Because of Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great happiness from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

His teachers tell his parents about it. He has to make a promise that he won't do that again. But soon he will forget it.
The teachers think he does well in his lessons and don't mind it.
One Saturday evening Allan finished his homework as soon as he had supper. He turned on the television, but there was no football match on TV.

Imagine you are walking through the woods and you see a small dog. It looks cute and friendly. You move up to pet the dog. Suddenly it barks and tries to bite you. The dog no longer seems cute and you feel afraid and possibly angry. Then, as the wind blows, the leaves on the ground are carried away and you see the dog has one of its legs caught in a trap. Now, you take pity on the dog. You know it becomes unfriendly because it is in pain.
We all judge (评判) others all the time. It might be over small things, like a workmate who takes too long of a lunch break. Or it might be over bigger matters, such as a person who does something selfishly or hurts our feelings. There are many reasons why we judge others. It is human nature to find a way to survive. When we see a dog or a person that might bite us, of course we feel threatened (威胁). We become nervous(紧张), want to fight back and are unable to see the possible reasons for another’s behavior (行为).
Although judgment is a natural behavior, try to catch yourself before you speak, for you can’t get your words back. Make a short stop. Try to change your thought into a positive (正面的) one. In fact, like that dog in the trap, we really don’t know the reasons for someone’s behavior.
When someone disagrees with us or makes our life difficult, remember that it’s usually not about us. It may be about their pain or struggle (挣扎) . Why not give others the right to express their doubt “ 14 ” Will Smith said, “because in all honesty, everyone is struggling. Some people are better at hiding it than others.”
12. The writer talks about the dog in the first paragraph mainly to __________.
A. give an example B. set the background(背景) C. share a good story D. tell a fact
13. According to the writer, we usually judge others __________.
A. for our own survival when feeling threatened B. after thinking carefully about their situation
C. about the real reasons behind their behavior D. over big matters instead of small ones
14. Which is the most suitable sentence for “ 14 ”
A. Never believe that others have pain.
B. Never pay much attention to others’ pain.
C. Never think others’ pain is bigger than it really is.
D. Never think others’ pain is smaller than it really is.
15.What can we infer (推断) from the passage
A. The best way to judge others is over something big like being hurt.
B. The writer thinks it’s never too late to judge others.
C. The writer agrees that people should think twice before judging.
D. We often judge others by finding out a perfect reason behind the behavior.
(三)阅读填空
A person has two ears but only one mouth. That means we should listen, not just speak. The word “listen” has the same letters as the word “silent(沉默的)”. Listening silently is a good quality that we should have. It’s important for us to be a good listener.
When someone is sad or angry, he wants to express his poor feelings. At this moment, we need to listen silently first until he gets calm. Then we may have a good talk with him. Maybe it is a good way to help him out.
Listening is a kind of love. For example, we may think our parents are always talking too much. But in fact, they do so because they care a lot about our health, study and so on. If we listen patiently, our parents will feel that we care about them. A loving silent moment is often more powerful than words.
Sometimes, we just want others to listen to us but forget to listen to others. In fact, that’s not polite. In order to show our respect for others, we had better listen to them first. Then we can express our ideas.
Listening sounds easy, but it’s not. Every head is a world. So we should learn to listen with our ears, eyes and hearts as much as we can, and try to make ourselves good listeners from now on.
Title: To be a good listener
What listening means Listening in 1 is a good quality that we should have.
