About 20 years ago, Daniel Hoffman, a classically trained violinist met a young musician playing in the town square in Marrakech, an ancient city in Morocco. They communicated in the little French they both knew, but their main common language was music. On the back of a motorbike of the fellow violinist, Hoffman weaved through the back streets of the city and then learned his first lessons in Andalusian music, the classical music of North Africa.
That experience gave birth to an idea: What would it be like to try to learn how to play different violin styles around the world in just one week Oh, yes, and at the end of that week, play a concert. He even got a name for the concept “musical extreme sports”.
It took him almost two decades to launch that dream with a friend. Up to now, the dream has taken the form of a new documentary currently airing on American public television stations called “Otherwise, It’s Just Firewood.”
In the documentary(纪录片), Hoffman travels to County Clare, Ireland, where he takes lessons with James Kelly, a master Irish violin player, for less than a week and then performs together with him in front of an audience, many of whom are star Irish musicians.
The film is what Hoffman hopes will be the first of an eventual series of short documentaries, showing him learning to play the violin in a variety of styles, including the folk music of south India, Sweden, Greece, Romania, and West Virginia.
That would add to his extensive repertoire(全部曲目),which already includes Balkan, Middle Eastern and Turkish styles. “The big joke is what’s the difference between the fiddle and the violin It’s the person who plays it,”says Niall Keegan, a traditional flute player. “It’s the music you make on it that makes it Irish or English or French or classical or jazz or whatever else. It’s how we imagine it and how we create through it that make it and give it character.” “Otherwise, it’s just firewood,” he says—words that became the film’s title.
28. Where does Hoffman’s idea of musical extreme sports come from
A. His exploration of the local music.
B. His cooperation with the young violinist.
C. His sightseeing tour on a motorbike.
D. His constantly changing taste in violin styles.
29. What does the underlined word “airing” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Happening. B. Broadcasting. C. Existing. D. Disappearing.
30. What can we know about the series of documentaries
A. They help Hoffman to become a master violin player.
B. They are funded by American public television stations.
C. They introduce different styles of musicians around the world.
D. They record Hoffman’s experience in learning various violin styles.
31. What does the title of the documentary “Otherwise, It’s Just Firewood” emphasize
A. The importance of famous artists. B. The technique of instrument playing.
C. The pleasure in learning traditional music. D. The power of diversified artistic expression.
D
Not all waste has to go to waste. Most of the world’s 2.22 billion tons of annual trash ends up in landfills or open dumps. Professor Veena Sahajwalla, 2022 Australian of the year, has created a solution to our massive trash problem: waste microfactories. These little trash processors, some as small as 500 square feet, house a series of machines that recycle waste and transform it into new materials with thermal technology. The new all-in-one approach could leave our current recycling processes in the dust.
In 2018 in Sydney she launched the world’s first microfactory, establishing a model of recycling that enables businesses and communities to develop commercial opportunities while addressing local waste problems. A second one began recycling plastics in 2019. Now, her lab group is working with university and industry partners to commercialize their patented Microfactory technology. “The small scale of the machines will make it easier for them to one day operate on renewable energy, unlike most large manufacturing plants. The approach will also allow cities to recycle waste into new products on location, avoiding the long, often international, high-emission journeys between recycling processors and manufacturing plants. With a microfactory, gone are the days of needing separate facilities to collect and store materials, extract(提取)elements and produce new products,” says Sahajwalla.
Traditionally, recycling plants break down materials for reuse in similar products—like melting down plastic to make more plastic things. Sahajwalla’s invention advances this idea by taking materials from an old product and creating something different. “The kids don’t look like the parents,” she says. Sahajwalla refers to this process as “the fourth R,” adding “re-form” to the common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.
“We can do so much more with materials,” says Sahajwalla. “Traditional recycling has not worked for every recycling challenge.” Professor Veena Sahajwalla’s programs help to develop innovation and promote cooperation with industry, ensuring that sustainable materials and processes become commercially practical solutions for dealing with waste.
32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce a new type of trash processor.
B. To praise professor Veena Sahajwalla.
C. To prove the seriousness of the trash problem.
D. To show the current situation of trash recycling.
33. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. The founding of waste microfactories.
B. The influences of waste microfactories.
C. The advantages of waste microfactories.
D. The shocking scale of waste microfactories.
34. What does “re-form” in Paragraph 3 refer to according to Sahajwalla
A. Extracting materials from the waste. B. Generating new materials with waste.
C. Updating the whole recycling process. D. Transforming waste into similar products.
35. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A fiction novel. B. A business report.
C. A science magazine. D. A chemical textbook.

Grandpa’s Old Chair
It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb(路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair ” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”
“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”
However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, John was woken by the garbage truck pulling up to the house. He run downstairs and saw his grandpa looking outside through the window, tears rolling down his cheeks. John followed his gaze and froze. The chair stood at the curb on the street, covered in snow. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted, waving both arms in the air as he rushed to stop it from being taken away. John then ran back inside and said, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It has been with him for decades and is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at his grandpa and slowly walked towards him. She handed the old man a tissue and said, “I’m sorry. . . I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back.” They brushed off the snow with their hands and took the chair back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm... I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she mused. John and his grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room would be rather dull without this old chair.

Text 10打破世界篮球马拉松纪录
W: Once a group of 17-year-old schoolboys decided to break the world basketball marathon record. They wanted to play for 90 hours, and that is to add 6 hours to the record. Each team had nine players, with five at a time. The boys decided each person would play 21. 5 hours and then rest for 2 hours. They started at 6 o’clock in the evening.
The first night was very hard for the players. When it was their turn to rest, they were too excited to fall asleep at once. After sleeping for a short time, they had to play again.
On the second night, they fell asleep as soon as they stopped. Some of them had trouble with their feet and hands, but the serious problem was a psychological one. Each boy was thinking: Why am I doing this How can I play any longer
After the third night, the players knew they could finish the 90 hours. On the fourth night, the players didn’t play basketball very well at first. But in the final hours, the players got better. For the last few minutes, the players looked as fresh as when they started. How happy everyone was!
